The same government contractor did background checks on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and Navy Yard shooting suspect Aaron Alexis.
WASHINGTON — The company that scrutinized former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden for a U.S. government security clearance said on Thursday it also checked the background of the Navy Yard shooter, allowing him to obtain a "secret" clearance.
USIS, working as a contractor for the Office of Personnel Management, conducted a background review of Aaron Alexis, identified by law enforcement authorities as the shooter who killed 12 people at the Navy Yard before he was shot dead.

More Guns Equal More Deaths, Study Finds
Places with higher gun ownership rates also have higher firearms-related deaths, a new study finds.
In the study, published today (Sept. 20) in the American Journal of Medicine, researchers analyzed gun ownership rates, crime rates and deaths from firearms across 27 developed countries around the world.
"The U.S. has the highest gun ownership rates and also has the highest rate of firearm-related deaths," said study co-author Dr. Sripal Bangalore, a cardiologist at the New York University School of Medicine. [5 Biggest Gun Control Milestones in History]
Despite the prevalence of high-profile mass shootings, such as the recent Navy shipyard shooting, where the attacker showed signs of mental illness, the prevalence of mental illness in a society is only weakly correlated with gun-related deaths.

I know, a person with an extreme agenda says an absurd thing, what's new. This sort of thing matters right now, though, because still only around a quarter of Americans say they understand the Affordable Care Act well, and it remains a point of contention. People want and need clear information for productive discussion. It is important to sift through some of the more volatile nonsense.
I also see it as an engaging way to learn something about the health law. McCaughey seems to be drawing an egregious conclusion from a clause that's worth being aware of.

Fast-Food Restaurant Raises Starting Salary to $15 per Hour
Amidst nationwide protests about the minimum wage at fast-food eateries, one burger joint in the Detroit metropolitan area has decided to raise its starting salary to $15. According to the Daily Beast, Moo Cluck Moo, a Michigan eatery, had already been paying employees an unheard of $12 per hour. Fast-food workers around the country have been holding protests to encourage companies and restaurant owners to raise staff pay. Moo Cluck Moo owners Brian Parker and Harry Moorhouse chose to give their staff a pay bump. The bump to the so-called "living wage" has many critics (predominantly fast-food execs and restaurants owners), but Parker and Moorhouse have found that higher pay leads to much better service and lower employee turnover. Plus the business owners truly believe that their staff deserves every penny. "It's not an easy job to do," explained Parker.

What to do, what to do...
In June I was rear-ended, and my vehicle totalled. The person who hit me was uninsured, so I used my insurance to recover most of the cost of my vehicle, and then replacing it. Within a week of the accident, my insurance company had a check in my hand and I proceeded to find another vehicle similar to the one I lost. The vehicle I found cost me $2500 more than the insurance check even though the vehicles were nearly identical excluding color.
The person who hit me settled with the insurance company since then. I am still out the $250.
Today I go to the mailbox and there was a letter from the person who hit me wanting me to tell the state that there is no harm done and that she ows nothing as a result of the accident. She also wants me to say that there was heavy rain that day imparing travel. Her concern is that it will effect her driving record and employment as her employer reviews their driving records.
So what should I do?
Respond and point out that 1) I am out the $2500 due to her rear ending me, and 2) It was in fact not raining that day rather it was a very sunny day?
Or do I just not respond?
Obamcare sparked my business
These entrepreneurs say Obamacare gave them an idea for a niche small business.
Obamacare will require large companies to make sure all of their employees have health insurance. But for retailers, restaurants and home health agencies, which typically employ a high percentage of low-income workers, the employer won't necessarily have to foot the bill.
That's because many of these workers are eligible for Medicaid, but either they or their employer don't know it, said Ben Geyerhahn, one of the co-founders of BeneStream.
BeneStream offers software that helps businesses identify which uninsured workers are eligible for Medicaid and then helps enroll them. The benefits are twofold: Newly enrolled workers avoid paying a penalty under Obamacare, while employers save money by not having to pay for their coverage.

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Labor Day Legislation
Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
Founder of Labor Day
More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.
Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."
But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

Fire Marshal: Inspections Refused Since West Blast
A railway operator that hauls hazardous materials across Texas was also said to have rebuffed a state request to share data since the April explosion at West Fertilizer Co. that killed 15 people and injured 200 others.
Regulators and state lawmakers at a hearing about the still-unsolved explosion were intrigued by the lack of cooperation. State Fire Marshal Chris Connealy said "well, sure" when asked whether those facilities refusing to admit inspectors raised concern.
"In their defense, they may have a very good reason," Connealy said.
There is no state fire code in Texas. The state fire marshal's office lacks the power to make unannounced inspections of local businesses, nor does the office have the authority to compel local facilities to open its doors.
