Buzz grows around Cuomo as Biden's attorney general pick

Buzz grows around Cuomo as Biden's attorney general pick
Axios

Democrats are so convinced that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo could be considered for Joe Biden's attorney general that aides at the National Governors Association, which Cuomo chairs, are looking into contingencies for replacing him, two sources familiar with the situation tell Axios.

What we're hearing: Some Democratic donors in Cuomo's orbit tell Axios that the governor is being pushed for the job and that Biden would consider him, based on their long friendship.

Why it matters: The AG would be among the most politically sensitive — and high-profile — jobs in a Biden administration.

The Justice Department will face pressure to investigate Trump-era officials — and perhaps Trump himself — for wrongdoing in office.

Biden's AG also would manage the federal response to police violence, social unrest and systemic racism, and the AG could seek to use federal powers to blunt state abortion restrictions.

Fox News host Chris Wallace questioned Trump campaign surrogate Lara Trump on Sunday about the first family's decision not to wear masks at the first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Wallace began his interview with the president's daughter-in-law by asking whether a White House Rose Garden gathering for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett was a "super-spreader event."

"People were packed in, almost no masks and Dr. Fauci has said that event was a super spreader," Wallace explained. "Why did it take the president getting COVID for the White House to take the CDC safety guidelines more seriously, although even yesterday they were still violating some?"

The Fox News host went on to ask the campaign surrogate why the Trump family declined to wear masks at the first presidential debate.

"You all took them off," Wallace recalled. "Did you think, Lara, that the rules that applied to everybody else in that hall didn't apply to you?"

"Well, of course we didn't think that!" Trump insisted. "I want to be very clear. Never one time did anyone from Cleveland Clinic come up and ask any member of our family to put a mask on. So that is totally false."

"Everybody in that hall had tested negative," Wallace said. "And the fact is, the rules were everybody except for the president, the vice president and I were supposed to wear masks and it was the pool report -- I'm not just making this up -- the pool report says a member of the Cleveland Clinic -- in fact, there's video that exists -- coming up to someone in the presidential party and saying would you like masks, and they were waved away."

Coons: Barrett has 'views that make her not qualified to serve on the Supreme Court

Coons: Barrett has 'views that make her not qualified to serve on the Supreme Court
By Zack Budryk - 10/11/20 09:59 AM EDT

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) in an interview on Sunday called Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s positions “disqualifying.”

“I’m going to be laying out the ways in which Judge Barrett’s views, her views on reaching back and reconsidering and overturning long-settled precedent are not just extreme they’re disqualifying,” Coons, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on “Fox News Sunday,” referring to Barrett's confirmation hearings, which are scheduled to begin this week.

“She has views that make her not qualified,” Coons continued, noting that “President Trump has said he would only nominate someone who would overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA), taking away health care protections for 100 million Americans” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Coons specifically referenced Barrett’s earlier criticism of Chief Justice John Roberts’s 2012 decision upholding the ACA. The Delaware senator added “this is hard for your average American to follow, I think,” saying he had spoken with constituents who believed the ACA was already settled law.

Huge Absentee Vote Favors Democrats So Far

Huge Absentee Vote Favors Democrats So Far
October 10, 2020 at 12:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Politico: “Of all the mini-battlegrounds within Wisconsin — perhaps the most pivotal state in November for both President Trump and Joseph R. Biden Jr. — the mother lode of absentee ballots is coming in Dane County, a Democratic stronghold that includes Madison. As of Friday, the number of submitted ballots there amounted to more than 36 percent of the county’s total 2016 election vote, a sign of significant enthusiasm; that figure is 10 percentage points higher than in any other county in the state…”

The yawning disparities in voting across Wisconsin and several other key battlegrounds so far are among the clearest signs yet this fall that the Democratic embrace of absentee voting is resulting in head starts for the party ahead of Election Day. For Republicans, the voting patterns underscore the huge bet they are placing on high turnout on Nov. 3, even as states like Wisconsin face safety concerns at polling sites given the spikes in coronavirus cases.

The Trump-related coronavirus cases we’ll never hear about
Trump’s carelessness with the coronavirus put countless others at risk.

The cases we’ll never hear about

Trump, who has had access to the best care possible in the US, seems to be on the mend. But that’s not the case for some in his orbit, and truth be told, we’ll probably never know how many people he and those around him have endangered.

On a day with no meetings at all in the White House but maintaining a reasonable schedule, he would likely interact with about 10 valets, house staff, and Oval Office staff, and anywhere from five to 30 Secret Service members, situation room staff, and other staff, according to one person familiar with a typical White House’s inner workings. By one estimate, there are some 300 essential workers in the White House. Then you think of the trips and meetings and fundraisers, and all of the people involved, and the network of possible spread explodes.

One White House staffer told the Atlantic that they found out about the president’s illness through news reports and that the fallout has been a “huge mess.” Andy T. Le, who worked for the Bush-Cheney White House and has done advance for multiple GOP politicians, emphasized that many people around the president don’t have any option but to follow his directions. “If he says, ‘I want to do this,’ [advance and Secret Service] will make it happen,” he said. “You never say no.”

snip//

The president’s coronavirus case may be the one leading headlines right now, but it shouldn’t overshadow how many other cases he may have been responsible for and how many people his behavior puts at risk. And it’s not just the workers he and his aides have endangered over the past couple of weeks, it’s everyone else, too.

“He should have done a better job in dealing with this virus, the coronavirus, and not only that, he should have done a better job in telling people to wear masks,” Williams said. The president could have stayed home when he realized he might be infected, and he can certainly continue to stay home now. Millions of workers across the country don’t have that same choice. “If we don’t work, we don’t get paid,” Williams said.

But the president is already gearing up for more rallies and is reportedly planning to hold an event at the White House over the weekend, setting himself up yet again to put people at risk.

Schiff: If Trump wanted more infections 'would he be doing anything different?'
By Tal Axelrod - 10/09/20 09:54 PM EDT

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Thursday tore into President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus, warning that a rally he plans to hold at the White House on Saturday runs the risk of spreading the illness.

“Donald Trump held a super-spreader event at the White House. Now he wants to hold another big rally there, and still refuses to wear a mask. I don’t think Donald Trump wants even more Americans to be infected with COVID-19. But if he did, would he be doing anything different?” Schiff, a prominent Trump critic, tweeted.

The tweet comes as Democrats assail Trump for his handling of the pandemic, noting his frequent flouting of mask and social distancing guidelines at his White House events and campaign rallies.

Trump’s $21 Million Tax Break for Preserving Forest at His Mansion Under Investigation

INTO THE WOODS

Surely Donald Trump didn’t have a hidden motive when he benevolently promised to preserve the beautiful woodland around his luxurious Westchester County mansion? The Washington Post has reported that the deal—which saw the future president handed a $21 million tax break in 2016—is now under investigation to determine whether the Trump Organization improperly inflated the value of the land. New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched the probe. The Post got hold of an appraisal which apparently showed the value was based on assertions and misleading conclusions—which, in turn, boosted the value of his tax break. The Trump Organization’s chief legal officer, Alan Garten, said “the allegations are categorically untrue.” Eric Trump, who now helps run the Trump Organization, sat for a deposition in the case Monday.

Dreaming of a Landslide
October 9, 2020 at 1:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Andrew Sullivan: “I know it’s tempting fate to mention the idea, foolish to entertain it, mad to expect it, but the possibility of a landslide is now real. There are about ten points between the two candidates with three weeks to go, and the momentum is overwhelmingly with the challenger. Among the likeliest scenarios in 538’s poll of polls is now a Biden Electoral College victory of over 400. Texas is in play. The Harris-Pence debate changed nothing, but firmly established Harris’ credentials as a possible president.”

“And all this changes a huge amount. A Biden win would be a reprieve for the country; a Biden landslide would be an American miracle.”

“Unlike anything else, it would cauterize the wound of Trump, preventing further infection. It would say to posterity: we made this hideous mistake, for understandable reasons, but after four years, we saw what we did and decisively changed course. It would turn the Trump era of nihilism, tribalism and cruelty into a cautionary tale of extremism, illiberalism and, above all, failure… A landslide loss for Trump would mitigate, if not remove, the deep damage he has done.”

As cases rise, experts concerned about coming flu season

(CNN)The last time Americans faced a fall and winter like this, World War I was just ending.

A months-long pandemic exploded in the fall of 1918, killing 195,000 Americans in just the month of October.

Fast-forward 102 years, and the US is on track for another devastating fall and winter. By the end of December, Covid-19 could kill more than 2,900 people a day in the US, according to projections Monday from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

But it doesn't have to be that way. With a smart approach to these cold-weather months, researchers say you can defy their grim projections.

Why is the fall / winter outlook so bad?

Health experts say colder weather, the flu season, reopened schools and pandemic fatigue are a recipe for the most difficult months yet in the fight against coronavirus. Here's why:
