What we are seeing here is the cruelty and inhumanity of Joe Bidens immigration policies, Miller said. He came into office and announced that theres an open door, and that young people who come into this country illegally are going to be resettled instead of returned. He is forcing thousands of young children into the arms of smugglers, into the arms of traffickers, into the arms of coyotes... That is cruel. That is inhumane, he said. The move by the Biden administration to reopen the migrant facility has sparked outrage, even among supporters, but Miller appeared to have none of the same concerns when he pushed for the zero tolerance policy that allowed thousands of migrant children to be separated from their families under Trump.

500,000+ Dead Need to Be Piled in Front of the GOP
This dumbfuck nation has no idea about how deep the post-traumatic stress disorder it's going to have to deal with for the foreseeable future is going to be. As we shift back to whatever normalcy is, we are going to bear the scars of the miserable last year and more. Every human interaction will be burdened with a sense of unease, an anxiety that will remain even as we know that we're vaccinated, that the virus is gone or under control. We will have been rewired by this brief but scarring period, and that goes even for those who act like it's all back to how things were pre-COVID. Resistance to the trauma is an active effect of it.
And then there's the mountain of the dead to contend with. Over a half-million people who lived in the goddamned United States are no longer here, and that's another scar on our exhausted, marked-up bodies. We cannot allow that loss to simply be absorbed into our collective propensity to repress, to forget the quotidian horrors of 21st-century existence. We need to keep that pain and grief present. And we need to lay those corpses down where they belong: piled like fleshy cordwood right in front of the Republicans.
We live in the world that they fucked up. No, the GOP didn't start the coronavirus, but they sure as hell made it into a catastrophe through their unending support for Donald Trump, who saw COVID not as a crisis but as a turd in the punchbowl at his gaudy party that he wasn't going to fish out. And they can't ever be allowed to forget it. What I fear is that the Republican Party is already changing the narrative, shifting blame for the high death count to states, to federal medical officials like Anthony Fauci, and, when it doesn't seem completely insane, eventually to the Biden administration, sweeping their own guilt away.
You can see it happen in real time with their refusal to deal honestly in any way with the insurrection and riot at the Capitol on January 6. You can see it in the party's refusal to censure, formally or informally, their members who profess to believe that the 2020 election was so filled with fraud and illegalities that Donald Trump actually beat Joe Biden. In fact, when you get to the level of the state GOP, they've gone completely nutzoid in their adherence to what we now call "the Big Lie" about the election, using it as an excuse to fuck over the voters with bullshit, useless restrictions that seek to turn Democratic voters into criminals. They are gaslighting and then building their agenda on how they've gaslit everyone.
In her scathing piece titled "Trump Is Guilty of Pandemicide" in Foreign Policy, Laurie Garrett damningly lays out how Trump completely checked out on any decisions at all on COVID efforts between the election and the inauguration. He was essentially telling us all to go fuck ourselves and die if he wasn't installed back in office. And it's not as if he did much of anything before, other than not blocking funding to get a vaccine. He made masks and social distancing and lockdowns into a political battleground. He perversely refused to acknowledge the dead and sick, offering virtually no words of comfort or sympathy. He lied about his own bout of coronavirus. He supported the sick fucks who protested maskless against restrictions, even to the point of violence, even to the point of an attempted kidnap/murder of the governor of Michigan. He held rallies and events with no masking and no social distancing that were superspreader events. He pointedly declined to use the Defense Production Act until too far into the pandemic and even then on a limited basis. He didn't give a single rat shit about having a national plan on testing and mitigation, and, at the end, we lost two months of vaccine distribution because, as I said, we could all go fuck ourselves, as far as he was concerned. So many lives could have been saved. So many jobs and businesses could have been saved. As Garrett puts it, prior to Trump, "no sitting U.S. president...has willfully allowed such preventable carnage to unfold on the American people."

I know we say all the time that Democrats are unmatched in their ability to fuck up golden opportunities to put a goddamn stake in the heart of the GOP vampires. But this shit isn't even that hard. Every terrible allegation you can make against Republicans is fucking real, unlike the fantasy crap they pin on Democrats. And it would suck to lose the chance to secure a narrative that paints the GOP as the criminals and extremists they are, all in the name of some worthless fucking illusion of unity.
See, Democrats can explain, the problem with unity, the problem with bipartisanship is that one of the parties is filled with murderers. Look at all the dead people piled in front of them.

The country's largest cable TV providers the companies that deliver hundreds of channels into homes across the country will be on the hot seat today. In the wake of the last month's deadly, military-style insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Democrats at a scheduled Energy and Commerce Committee hearing want to know what AT&T, Comcast, Verizon and other media bosses are doing about the never-ending flow of lies and misinformation produced by right-wing outlets, such as Fox News.
Today, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter are working to try to clamp down on far-right content that spreads dangerous lies about the election, which whipped up a bloodthirsty mob on January 6, as well as a year's worth of Covid-19 falsehoods. Now Democrats want to press the carriers on what can be done about cable television outlets, including Newsmax TV and OAN, that gleefully do the same thing.
The carriers not only help Fox News spread the insurrectionist message, they provide the network with billions of dollars each year in lucrative fees.

Cable providers might like to see themselves as nothing more than middlemen who provide programming platforms. But when that content kills, the way right-wing lies about elections and Covid do, those providers bear responsibility.

Biden nominees who aren't white men are mysteriously facing tough confirmation fights

Go figure. For some reason, the Biden nominees facing the toughest confirmation fights are women of color. And its not just Republicansconservative Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin more or less tanked Neera Tandens nomination to head the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and is publicly hesitating about Rep. Deb Haalands nomination for secretary of the interior.
Tanden, who is Indian American, would be the first woman of color to head OMB. Haaland, who is an enrolled citizen of the Laguna Pueblo, would be the first American Indian Cabinet secretary. These are the nominees Manchin has chosen to in the first case oppose and in the second case let it be known he has remaining questions and is undecided.
snip//
Theres a pattern here even beyond Haaland and Tanden. Of President Bidens nominees to be confirmed to date, the closest vote was for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the first Latino and first immigrant in that role. Republicans are also threatening to hold up the nomination of Health and Human Services (HHS) nominee Xavier Becerra, the current California attorney general and a former House member. Becerra would be the first Latino to lead HHS. Republicans, after confirming non-doctor Alex Azar to be HHS secretary under Trump, say that not being a doctor means Becerra isnt qualified.
The list goes on. Outside right-wing groups are launching attacks on Vanita Guptas nomination for associate attorney general. Democrats are concerned that Kristen Clarke, nominated to head the civil rights division of the Department of Justice, will face opposition. Gupta is Indian American. Clarke is Black.
And it has to be recognized for what it is. Republicans and Manchin alike can claim that race and gender play no role in who they find themselves comfortable with or concerned about, or in who they feel safe opposing. But their actions will tell the tale.

I want to be responsible and obviously wait my turn, she continued, but this rollout has been a disaster. And I understand President Trump can take much of the blame, but now were in the Biden administration and I, for one, would like something to look forward to and to hope for because if getting the vaccine means that just nothing changes and we have to wait another few years until everyone gets it, theres already a lot of people not getting it.
So Im over Dr. Fauci, McCain declared. I think we need to have more people giving more opinions and honestly quite frankly, I think the Biden administration should remove him and put someone in place that does understand science or can talk like these other countries about how we can be more like these other places that are doing this successfully.
Its one thing to criticize the Biden administrations messaging around vaccines, but for McCain to suggest that Fauci doesnt understand science was clearly beyond the pale for moderator Whoopi Goldberg, who talked over her co-host and threw to commercial as she explained, I know what Im saying is controversial, I really do. But Im not a phony and Im not going to come on air and say something different than what Im saying privately.

Forced to Wait by Trump, First Group of Asylum Seekers Finally Allowed to Enter the United States
Fernanda Echavarri
On Friday, the first group of asylum seekers forced to wait in Mexico for much of the last two years under a Trump-era doctrine began to enter the United States. Their arrival marks an official end to Trumps callous Remain in Mexico policy. And the start of the governments processing of approximately 25,000 active asylum cases for the people marooned in border cities.

People who were placed under Migrant Protection Protocols and who still have an open case can now enter their information on this website. If theyre eligible, they receive a date and time for their appointment at one of three ports of entry. On Friday it was only San Diego, but the plan is to expand to the ports at Brownsville Monday and El Paso by February 26.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is helping triage in Mexico and will help administer the required COVID-19 test for those who are called to be processed. Once in the United States, asylum seekers will be allowed to continue their asylum cases in the immigration court closest to their final destination. Organizations like the Jewish Family Services of San Diego plan to assist people after they enter.

Eric Boehlert: With Trump gone, CNN pulls the plug on White House press briefings
With Trump gone, CNN pulls the plug on White House press briefings
Different rules for Dems
Eric Boehlert

After creating new programming rules for the Trump administration and airing virtually every minute of every White House press briefing live and in its entirety, CNN has quietly cut the chord with the new Democratic administration.
Just one month into President Joe Biden's term, the all-news cable channel last week stopped airing the daily White House press briefings. Perhaps the events weren't entertaining enough, as White House spokesperson Jen Psaki has routinely declined to insert Biden into cultural war debates, refused to castigate reporters, and wont make stuff up in the name of partisan warfare, the way her Republican predecessors did.
Instead, Psaki has answered questions as best she can about White House policy, while treating journalists with respect, instead of mocking them in search of cheap political points.
That's no longer considered must-see TV at CNN. Fox News also stopped airing the briefings, which is completely expected. MSNBC as of last week was still airing the live Q&A's from the White House.
CNN's move represents one of the most dramatic ways the press has changed the way it covers Biden, as compared to Trump. Suddenly gone is the nonstop, unfiltered coverage of White House briefings, which defined cable news during the past four years.

Were one month and change into the Biden presidency, and lets just say it. Hes been staggeringly good. He has way surpassed my expectations. And its small wonder he has a 63 percent approval rating. Most people like what they see.
Whats he done, in big-picture terms? Three things. First and foremost, he and his team are not letting themselves be bullied by the economic supply-siders and neoliberals whove spent the last few decades transferring $50 trillion in wealth from the middle class to the rich.
Second, the Biden team understands that the standard Beltway definition of bipartisanship is useless with todays Republican Party. The Biden people get that congressional Republicans dont even really represent most rank-and-file Republicans anymorehence these polls showing significant support even among Republicans for most aspects of the COVID relief bill. This administration shows every sign of not letting itself get suckered into the false promise of trying to win Republican votes that arent likely to materialize.
Third, they dont have contempt for Democrats to their left, which is a great thing to see. History tells us pretty clearly in my view that progress is made in this country when activists on the left go out and agitate and change public opinion and liberals codify that change by writing laws. The Biden people clearly agree with this view.

And there are signs of a broader political shift underway. These are often longtime party loyalists, highly engaged voters who cast Republican primary ballots in low-profile, off-year elections They havent changed their political ideologies, they said in interviews. But theyre registering as third-party or independent voters because they believe that their political home, now led by Trump, has changed around them.
That raises the prospect of a Republican primary electorate even friendlier to Trump and Trump-allied candidates something that could have big implications for the party in competitive races for governor and U.S. Senate next year.

U.S. Vaccine Rollout Now Among Best In the World
February 21, 2021 at 8:04 am EST By Taegan Goddard
The U.S. has carried out more vaccinations than any country in the world, and given a first dose to a higher percentage of its population (12%) than all but five countries: Israel, the Seychelles, the UAE, the U.K. and Bahrain.
In fact, the U.S. is distributing doses three times as quickly as the EU, adjusted for population, and nearly five times as quickly as Canada.
