Trump lawyer urges court to block House from getting tax returns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An appeals court on Thursday debated whether a congressional committee can obtain former President Donald Trump's tax returns from the U.S. Treasury Department, the latest face-off in a three-year old legal fight.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit heard oral arguments over whether the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee can obtain the former president's tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service, part of the Treasury Department.
Senior Judge David Sentelle, a conservative jurist, expressed skepticism's of Trump's arguments during the hearing.
Trump lawyer Cameron Norris argued that there is no legitimate reason for the Ways and Means Committee to see the tax returns. Sentelle indicated he disagreed with that, saying it is possible the committee has both legitimate legislative reasons for wanting the tax returns and illegitimate political motivations.

Dozens of ex-rebels in a group that has been accused of rape and torture in the Central African Republic are being trained to fight in Ukraine, officials told The Daily Beast.

ABUJA, Nigeria—More than a hundred former Central African Republic (CAR) rebels taken by the infamous Wagner Group—which is run by one of President Vladimir Putin’s closest associates—to Russia last month for military training are set to fight in Ukraine, three government officials told The Daily Beast.
According to two senior military officers and a defense ministry official in CAR, more than 200 so-called former rebels, who worked for the Union for Peace (UPC) militant group and were also part of a coalition of fighters of major rebel groups created in 2020 to disrupt a Central African general election, traveled to Moscow in early February for military training that was originally expected to last for weeks at a Wagner camp.
Of the number that traveled, according to the officials, only 100 returned to CAR at the start of March while the rest remained in Russia for deployment in Ukraine.

By pretending that NATO is not already at war with Russia, we’ve let Putin define the terms of engagement, at the tragic expense of Ukraine.

The purely military part of Russia’s invasion has hit a stalemate. The Russian advance has stalled, thanks to heroic resistance by Ukrainians and defensive weapons supplied by NATO. But this is small comfort.
The West, out of fear of wider war, has allowed Putin to define what counts as a NATO war with Russia. Thus, the Biden administration has gotten into hair-splitting exercises, in which supplying the West’s most sophisticated anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons does not count as a war with Russia, but supplying planes does.
This is dangerous sophistry. It has led to a proxy war between NATO and Russia, in which the West is willing to fight to the last Ukrainian, but in a limited way that doesn’t allow Ukraine to prevail or even to survive.

Sooner or later, NATO will have to give Ukraine planes powerful enough to annihilate Russia’s invading armies. It might as well be sooner.
Otherwise, we will reach a level of disaster where even more direct military engagement against Putin will be necessary. And that will be even riskier.

Two Russian soldiers have been caught venting about Putin’s “bullshit” war against Ukraine in an intercepted phone call as devastating losses reportedly led one soldier to drive over his colonel with a tank.
“Basically, it’s a shitshow here, I’ll put it that way,” an unnamed soldier near Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine can be heard telling a colleague in a recording released by Ukraine’s Security Service late Tuesday.
After telling his friend that Ukrainian forces “tore apart” a column of Russian forces sent along with his own unit, he described complete disarray among the Russian military, with 50 percent of the unit suffering from frostbite on their feet.

He said soldiers are complaining about having Kevlar vests that lack the hard-armor panel, but they are ignored.
“They couldn’t even send off the 200s here,” he said, using a Russian military term for dead bodies. “They rode with us for five days.”

Debra Meadows was a busy bee in 2020. According to the North Carolina Board of Elections, on Oct. 26, Debbie showed up at the Macon County community building in Franklin, North Carolina, and filled out a one-stop voter application for early voting in the 2020 presidential election. She claimed she lived in Scaly Mountain in a 14-foot by 62-foot mobile home. The problem was … she didn’t.
According to North Carolina state law, in order to vote in that state, you must reside in the claimed address for at least 30 days prior to the election. Again, she didn’t. Debbie must not have read the top of the voter form either, which clearly states: “fraudulently or falsely completing this form is a Class I felony under Chapter 163 of the NC general statutes.”
Debbie additionally dropped off an absentee ballot for her hubby Mark Meadows, who was then the White House chief of staff for failed President Donald Trump.
This is just the latest in a long list of discoveries regarding Mark and Debbie and their shady-as-hell voting practices.
