By contrast, Vlad, your east-to-west slog of today has proved a lame, costly, and humiliating blunder for the whole world to see. David trounces Goliath. You have turned Blitzkrieg into Fritzkrieg—or FUBAR, as some would call it—and it will probably never become a course taught in military science.

snip//

Vlad, let’s put aside all talk of economics and climate. What your stupid war has done is bring world-wide opprobrium down on you and your country. Indeed, you have done the near-impossible job of making Russia a pariah state throughout the world, left with only fellow-outcast states—North Korea, Belarus, Syria, and Venezuela—as UN voting pals. You may have banned the word “war” in your country and euphemized it to “special military operation,” but thanks to modern communications, the rest of the world has seen up close your dire deeds in Ukraine; whatever you want to call them, those visuals will not be easily erased from our collective memory.

You have a habit, Vlad, of telling the world, and lecturing us in the West, on how weak and corrupt our western democracies are, and how different Russia is, as though your model of autocracy wed to kleptocracy is the future of human governance. I know that democracy is relatively rare and always fragile. But a prophecy of our demise coming from the leader of the eleventh-ranking economic power in the world, reliant on oil and gas to prop up even that modest showing—with your oligarchs choosing to store their ill-gotten gains in the corrupt western democracies (not to mention sending their privileged young to study there)—loses all credibility. It died in Ukraine.

How do you explain your failure there? You doubtlessly reasoned that it would be easy to absorb that fledgling democracy. After all, you were a nuclear power facing a young democracy that voluntarily gave up nuclear weapons. The word “democracy” made the difference. Ukrainians did not want to give up what they had only just won in 2014, and they showed the will and the way to shame you and your vaunted military on the battlefield. We shall see who buries whom.

In closing, Vlad, I’d like to ask you two questions, which you may refuse to answer. But here goes anyway. My five years of military experience include the Korean War, which hardly makes me an expert on modern military matters. That said though, I am fascinated by a strange and inexplicable statistic emerging from your war on Ukraine. In the first month of combat, you have had at least seven generals killed in action. Generals! That just doesn’t happen. Generals almost always stay behind the lines, removed from the bullets and slaughter. Generals don’t die until they write their memoirs. So how do you explain this confounding anomaly?

Question two: I sense you’re not worried about the thousands of conscript cannon fodder returning home in body bags. Those young men lived in small remote towns and farms where you are still respected and folks believe your propaganda that the war was really started by Ukraine. But what about the return of those generals’ bodies to Moscow and Saint Petersburg? Won’t there be outrage from important families who know the dirty truth about “Putin’s War”? Would love to know how you will handle that.

Sincerely,

This Believer in Democracy

James Carville Has Had It With Democratic Whiners

James Carville Has Had It With Democratic Whiners
"If we can't stand in there for Joe Biden and talk about the great things he's done, then we don't deserve to win this election in 2022," the Democratic strategist said.
By Susie Madrak — April 14, 2022

Stephanie Ruhle wanted to ask James Carville why Joe Biden isn't more popular.

"James, last night I talked to a strategist who said Democrats are going into the midterms disappointed because Joe Biden hasn't gotten much done," she said.

"But the thing is, he's gotten a lot done! He just had a Supreme Court justice on the bench, he passed the American Rescue Plan. The largest infrastructure law, comprehensive vaccine rollout, and our economy, while complicated, is in recovery. There's a lot of great things. Do Democrats need to do a lot of a better job selling these wins?"

"Thank you. You know, some Democrats need to shut up and quit saying that the president has not done anything, because he has done a lot," Carville said.

"If you look at his approval rating just among Democrats, it's 15 to 20 points below where it should be. And a lot of that is about the yapping that comes from Democrats telling other Democrats that Joe Biden hasn't done anything for you. When, in fact, if you are an hourly worker, and you have a child you are raising in poverty, Joe Biden has done more for you than anybody else has ever done for you.

"You look at this outstanding Supreme Court justice, look at the contempt and disrespect and how ill-mannered they went towards her. If you're a Democrat, I don't care what you are with gender, race, if you don't see that and you are not outraged, and it doesn't make you want to vote, I can't do anything for you! You're just a whiny, complaining person.

"They're going to activate you and motivate you to go out and vote! You look around and you see the power that hourly workers have, the people we claim that we care about. You look at how much their lives improve, look at 2 million people, a Yale study today said 2 million lives were saved because of vaccine distribution that took place under the Biden administration. So this idea that he hasn't done anything in particular for anybody, it's insane, it's wrong. it's so wrong," he said.

"But why does it happen? Where does it come from? It makes no sense," Ruhle said.

"Because you get on television complaining that the president hasn't done anything for you, right?" Carville said. (Too true.)

"He's done a lot for the people that we as Democrats say that we care about. And look at the way that they are treating the now Justice Jackson. Look at what is going to happen in the Supreme Court. They are going to tap dance on your head. And they don't care, because they believe, and I hate to say it, they may be right, that the Democrats are a weak, lame party -- and that just may be it.

"If we can't stand in there for Joe Biden and talk about the great things he's done, then we don't deserve to win this election in 2022."

Veteran Senator Dianna Feinstein is sometimes unable to recognize longstanding colleagues or keep up with arguments in the chamber, according to a new report. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that on one recent conversation with another lawmaker, Feinstein, 88, who recently lost her husband, “repeated the same small-talk questions… with no apparent recognition the two had already had a similar conversation.” The Chronicle report says “four U.S. senators, including three Democrats, as well as three former Feinstein staffers and the California Democratic member of Congress” told them “that her memory is rapidly deteriorating” and that she can “no longer fulfill her job duties without her staff doing much of the work required to represent the nearly 40 million people of California.” The sources said that on good days, Feinstein “is nearly as sharp as she used to be” and the Chronicle pointed out that she performed well during confirmation hearings for new Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. A source described as “a staffer for a California Democrat” told the paper, “There’s a joke on the Hill, we’ve got a great junior senator in Alex Padilla and an experienced staff in Feinstein’s office.” In a statement, Feinstein said: “The last year has been extremely painful and distracting for me, flying back and forth to visit my dying husband who passed just a few weeks ago. But there’s no question I’m still serving and delivering for the people of California, and I’ll put my record up against anyone’s.”

Bus with migrants sent by Texas governor arrives in DC

Can Abbott be any more of a dick?

Bus with migrants sent by Texas governor arrives in DC
by Dominick Mastrangelo - 04/13/22 9:34 AM ET

A bus carrying migrants from Texas arrived in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday morning after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) last week announced plans to send them from his state’s southern border to the nation’s capital.

Fox News anchor John Roberts tweeted a picture of the bus parked outside the building that houses the network’s bureau on Capitol Hill and that of several other news outlets on Wednesday morning.

Abbott said during a press conference last week the migrants would be voluntarily sent to Washington so that President Biden could “immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border.”

Abbott also ordered the state to charter flights to transport migrants to the nation’s capital after they have been processed by the Department of Homeland Security, The Texas Tribune reported.

One Seat in Coach, 36 Suitcases, and Enough Kevlar to Fight a War The Ukrainian Americans supplying an army on their own.

In a black T-shirt that says “warrior” in Ukrainian, Ivan Sikorskyi swerves around potholes on the Queens cemetery belt in his Dodge Caravan with a silver chrome skull on the top of the gear shift. Behind him are two blue duffels and a suitcase filled with body armor, drone batteries, and tourniquets; stacked on top are three combat helmets from a stranger in Pittsburgh. Sikorsyki isn’t sure how the man got his number. “People just call me and ask if I can deliver to Poland,” he says.

These calls have been coming nonstop to the 33-year-old plumber since Russia invaded the country he grew up in. Two or three times a week, he takes off from his apartment in Ridgewood with a “Stand With Ukraine” sign in the window and makes this run to JFK airport, part of a network of volunteers shipping combat supplies to the front lines 5,000 miles away.

For years, Sikorskyi and others like him have been donating to Ukrainians fighting Russian-backed separatists, sending over Salomon boots and reconnaissance drones roughly once a month through commercial shipping firms such as Meest and DSV. But when Ukraine’s airspace closed following the Russian invasion, he and others started fundraising on Facebook for a makeshift operation that sends dozens of checked bags with a passenger on Poland’s national airline, LOT, to Warsaw. Then it’s on to Ukraine by van. At first, there were some concerns about sending supplies to a warzone, but the TSA is surprisingly lenient about what goes in a checked bag, and a representative for the airline said it doesn’t object.

Despite a wrong turn on the airport’s maze of roads, Sikorsyki is early to the short-term parking lot of Terminal 7, and he runs off to grab a bunch of heavy-duty luggage carts. On his return, another SUV shows up from central New Jersey. Nataliya Douglas has brought ten military-surplus bags she bought on her credit card for $3,000 at the advice of her brother in Kyiv, who is coordinating with an understocked territorial-defense force of Ukrainian volunteers, who are not as well supplied as the country’s standing military. She heard about this supply run only two days ago. “We’re like little ants,” she says. “Our antennas are up when trouble is in our homeland far away.” Inside each olive-green duffel is a full kit for one soldier: a ballistic helmet, a bulletproof vest, military pants, a fleece top, knee pads, elbow pads, gloves, and a Ziploc with nutrition bars. On top lies a piece of computer paper with Bible passages in Ukrainian — “there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand” (Joshua 21:44).

More Ukrainians arrive with suitcases, including Sikorskyi’s partner, Dima Topchiy, a financial analyst living in Bensonhurst who’s been supplying Ukraine’s forces on and off since 2014. He started a Facebook group to solicit donations from other Ukrainian Americans to fill soldiers’ requests — especially the body armor he chases down on the bountiful American military-surplus market. Upon delivery, the soldiers send him photos of themselves giving a thumbs-up next to suitcases filled with just-add-water pizza meals and $1,100 Autel drones. As the fighting ramped up, similar groups began crowdfunded shipments for commercial flights out of Newark, Philadelphia, Miami, and Chicago.

The Biden administration has launched a $1 billion program to advance its goal of conserving 30% of the nation’s lands and waters by 2030.

The program, called the America the Beautiful Challenge, will serve as a “one-stop-shop” for states, tribes, territories, non-governmental organizations, and others to apply for numerous grants for conservation and restoration projects, the administration said. It is backed by an initial $440 million in federal funds over five years—the bulk of which comes from the bipartisan infrastructure law that Congress passed last year—and aims to draw private and philanthropic contributions to reach the $1 billion mark.

The new program “will help mobilize new investments in locally-led, voluntary conservation and restoration projects across the country while making it easier for communities to access these resources,” Brenda Mallory, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, said in a statement.

Funds will be awarded to projects focused in several areas: conservation and restoration of rivers, coasts, wetlands, forests, and grasslands; connecting landscapes and wildlife corridors; increasing resilience to coastal flooding, drought, and other climate impacts; and expanding access to the outdoors.

Ohio GOP Senate Candidate: Middle Class Doesn't Pay 'Fair Share' Of Taxes
Ohio Republican candidate for Senate and millionaire investment banker Mike Gibbons wants to raise taxes on the middle class.

Ohio Republican candidate for Senate and millionaire investment banker Mike Gibbons wants to raise taxes on the middle class. Some of you may remember Gibbons from the recent debate where he and Josh Mandel nearly came to blows. He's also another one you can add to the long list of Republicans sucking up to Trump by pushing his Big Lie about the election supposedly being stolen.

Here's more from The Columbus Dispatch on Gibbon's comments on taxes:

Mike Gibbons, a leading Republican Senate candidate from Ohio, said at a media event last fall that middle-class Americans don’t pay “any kind of a fair share” of income taxes.

“The top 20% of earners in the United States pay 82% of federal income tax — and, if you do the math, and 45% to 50% don’t pay any income tax, you can see the middle class is not really paying any kind of a fair share, depending on how you want to define it,” Gibbons said.

The comments by Gibbons, a millionaire investment banker from Cleveland, were made in a September episode of “The Landscape” podcast by Crain’s Cleveland Business. But they could take on new resonance after Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, a potential 2024 presidential candidate, introduced a governing plan in February that has divided the party over its call to raise taxes on millions of Americans who don’t earn enough to pay federal income taxes.

I'm not sure what geniuses are advising Republicans these days, but it seems more and more of them are saying the quiet part out loud about raising taxes on working class Americans, and going after Social Security and Medicare.

Dan Froomkin: “Here’s where we in the mainstream media can do something useful: We can stop talking about Fox like it’s a different form of news — and start talking about how it isn’t news at all. It’s the opposite of news. It’s instead of news. It’s the absence of news.
