President Joe Biden formally signed the biggest climate package in U.S. history Tuesday night, cementing the $430 billion Inflation Reduction Act into law. The legislation, hailed by former President Barack Obama on Tuesday evening, is aimed at cutting domestic greenhouse gases and fighting climate change, as well as improving health care and reducing the price of prescription drugs. Just after Biden signed the legislation at the White House event, he handed the pen to Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who was crucial to passing the final version of the bill. “Joe, I never had a doubt,” Biden said. After the event Manchin described the gift of the pen as “a nice gesture. A very nice gesture.” When asked about his feelings about Biden’s pointed remark to him, Manchin described the president as “optimistic.”

‘He Didn’t Like To Read’: Missouri Paper Highlights a ‘Particularly Curious’ Element of Trump’s Document Stash

Noting the former president’s proclivity towards boredom, general lack of interest in reading and abject love of TV, the editorial board writes:

“Against that backdrop, the existence of perhaps 25 boxes full of government documents, reportedly including top secret material, in a Mar-a-Lago basement seems particularly curious. Why would Trump want them at his private residence when he didn’t like to read and had no legal right to possess them?”

Referencing Trump’s relentless 2016 campaign against Hillary Clinton over her private email sever, the editorial board insists, “Trump certainly had to grasp how serious it is to unlawfully retain classified documents”

“And after the FBI collected 15 boxes full of documents at Mar-a-Lago earlier this year, Trump must have had a good reason to hide the existence of another 10 boxes,” the editorial continues. “It was only after an informant tipped off the FBI to the additional boxes that a federal judge authorized last week’s search.”

The editorial board goes on to slam Republicans who are “apoplectic” over the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago but mum on Trump’s decision to take documents that “were never his.”

“Regardless of the justification, the documents were never his, and Republicans who are apoplectic over the FBI search should first be asking why it was ever O.K. for him to break the law in the first place,”
the board writes.

Biden, Democrats suddenly have a lot of good stuff to run on for the midterms, and a plan to use it

President Joe Biden will sign the Inflation Reduction Act into law Tuesday. That’s the big climate change and health care bill passed in record time by the Congress this month, an accomplishment that Biden and fellow Democrats intend to highlight in the 85 days until the 2022 midterm election. Suddenly, Democrats have the advantage of a strong record of accomplishments to run on, while at the same time running against Republican extremism and obstruction—as good a formula as you can get for a midterm election.

The White House is planning a big bill-signing celebration next month when Congress returns after the Labor Day holiday, when the fall campaign will kick off in earnest. That will include a big speech right after Labor Day in Wisconsin, where Biden will stump for Gov. Tony Evers, the Democrat running for reelection, and Mandela Barnes, challenger to Republican Sen. Ron Johnson.

Sources to CNN say it would be a “hard-hitting kick off for midterm campaigning, with the President touting tangible, long-talked-about wins like lowering prescription drug costs and gun restrictions while hammering Republicans for being extremists who are in the pocket of special interests.”

That’s a characterization Republicans have certainly earned. They’ve delayed legislation that will help grow the economy; they stepped in it in a big way by delaying a vote on the bipartisan and popular legislation to help veterans affected by toxic burn pits during their service; and they prevented diabetic people with private health insurance from getting affordable insulin. Then there’s abortion, where in state after state Democrats are going on the offense against hugely unpopular new laws from Republicans.

While Republicans have committed all those unforced errors, they’ve also seen their main campaign narratives lose oomph as gas prices are falling and Democrats are getting stuff accomplished. There’s also that issue of Donald Trump under criminal investigation for all his potential criming and espionage.

The campaign push from the administration is going to begin before Labor Day, as will Biden’s travel around the country to tout the Democrats’ accomplishments. That will include Biden traveling to Ohio to break ground for a new Intel megaplant, where he’ll celebrate the semiconductor bill recently passed. In addition, through the rest of August, Cabinet members will hit 23 states in 35 trips.

The White House is also planning “hundreds of town halls and roundtables” with the Senate and House, and is pledging to coordinate more closely with political allies beyond Congress. The administration is also going to unveil a website to help Americans navigate the rebates and tax credits available to them through the new climate bill for making their homes energy efficient.

With all that happening, that bill signing ceremony next month and the campaign events following it are going to be a lot more celebratory and enthusiastic.

It's Time for Republicans to Go Nuclear and Dump Trump

It’s Time for Republicans to Go Nuclear and Dump Trump
THE 5TH AVENUE MOMENT
At some point, “national security conservatives” need to stop making excuses and ditch the ex-president for recklessly endangering American interests.

Maybe the evidence seized was so valuable that the risk of turning Trump into even more of a martyr justified the raid. Otherwise, either the Feds obtained enough evidence to put him away, or they may have just put him in the White House. When dealing with Trump, Napoleon’s maxim that “If you start to take Vienna, take Vienna” rings true. Anything that doesn’t kill his political career probably makes it stronger.

Now, I would like to believe that conservatives—particularly those who value national security—will appreciate the especially serious nature of this breach—and react accordingly. Is it possible that this threat is so serious that it could move the needle when everything else—including Jan. 6—didn’t? In the past, national security has been cited as a reason why Trump shouldn’t be elected president.

In 2016, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio declared that we can’t give “the nuclear codes of the United States to an erratic individual.”

Well, we did. The question is, do you think we should have let him keep our nuclear documents forever? Is this breach something we’re willing to ignore and defend?

Devin Nunes Somehow Blames Benghazi And Obama For Mar-A-Lago Search

Devin Nunes Somehow Blames Benghazi And Obama For Mar-A-Lago Search
Try that again in English, Devin.
By Conover Kennard — August 14, 2022

Truth Social's tech guy, Devin Nunes, took a segment on Fox's Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo to blame e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e except for former President Donald Trump for the investigation into possible espionage. This is kind of painful to listen to or read, but it needs to be shown to highlight the lengths Trump's allies will go to to protect their orange pissdaddy's criminality.

"I think it goes back pre-Russia-gate hoax," Nunes said with a straight face. "I think this goes back to the IRS scandal where they targeted conservatives. I think it goes back to fast and furious during the Obama administration, where they ran guns and tried to set people up, remember? Innocent Americans ended up getting killed. It goes back to Benghazi; they got away with that."

Lord have mercy.

"And it was late 2015 or '16 that we get to the plan where the Clinton campaign worked with dirty cops at DOJ and FBI, and I must say the media, I must say, where they set up to spy on the Trump campaign and, ultimately, Republicans and frame an innocent man that then led to what?" he added. "So that was the Russia hoax that then led to the Mueller witch hunt. So all of this stuff is intertwined."

That... doesn't make any sense. How in TF is any of this intertwined with former President Treason McTraitorFace stealing top secret documents? Devin needs to go back to cow herding because no reasonable person would blame Obama or Hillary for Trump's fuckups. All of that is only "intertwined" if you're desperate and can't come up with a reasonable explanation for Trump's strange behavior.

That's a lot of words, Devin, for, I don't draw a line at espionage. But do go off.

ABC Analyst: Trump Faces '20 Years Behind Bars' For 'Serious Felonies'

ABC Analyst: Trump Faces '20 Years Behind Bars' For 'Serious Felonies'
A legal analyst for ABC News pointed out that former President Donald Trump is potentially facing 20 years in prison for "serious felonies" after the search of his Mar-a-Lago home.
By David Edwards — August 14, 2022

A legal analyst for ABC News pointed out that former President Donald Trump is potentially facing 20 years in prison for "serious felonies" after the search of his Mar-a-Lago home.

Dan Abrams told ABC host Jonathan Karl that the Department of Justice could indict Trump for multiple crimes after finding classified documents during the search.

"They're very serious," Abrams said of the charges. "And the one that's being talked about most is this espionage act because it has the word espionage in it. But the truth is that when it comes to potential criminal sentences, the obstruction of justice statute is the one with the most potential prison time."

"There you're talking about up to 20 years behind bars," he added. "So these are not sort of minor crimes we're talking about here. We're talking about the potential for serious felonies with regard to all three of the crimes being investigated."

Sam Donaldson Tells Trump's Supporters That They Are Un-American

Sam Donaldson Tells Trump’s Supporters That They Are Un-American

Legendary correspondent Sam Donaldson said that the real un-Americans in the United States are those who knowingly support Trump.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1558938050448728064

Donaldson told CNN’s Jim Acosta:

I’ve admired conservatives who believe because they think the government is encroaching too much. But the ones who now are supporting Donald John Trump and Trump-ism when they know better if they’re ignorant in the dictionary definition of the sense I feel sorry for them. But those people who know better not only are they cowards, but they’re the ones who are un-American.

Donald Trump has said we in the press are un-American. All Democrats are un-American and the enemies of the state. We’re the enemies of the state. Now they’re calling the FBI our principal national law enforcement agency which keeps us all safe and has for decades and decades un-American. How dare they? How dare they? Who are these people?

Donaldson was right. Real conservatives have long ago bolted the Republican Party. What is left are the people who have warped conservatism to justify big government and big government spending.

Those that are left behind in the husk of what used to be Lincoln’s party have become opposed to American values.

Trump and supporters label anyone who opposes them as un-American when the true un-Americans are those Republicans who are knowingly enabling Trump and his fascist tendencies to destroy democracy.

Cohen suspects the possible informant in the FBI's Mar-a-Lago raid is in Trump's "inner circle."

"I would not be surprised to find out it is Jared or one of his children," Cohen said.

"Who else would know about the existence of a safe and the specific contents kept inside?" he said.

This right here is why men should not try to talk about women's bodies

This right here is why men should not try to talk about women's bodies

A member of the Salt Lake County Council is the latest example of why dudes should keep their mouths shut about abortion rights until they learn some basic anatomy.

Dave Alvord decided to teach Vice President Kamala Harris a thing or two after she tweeted, “We trust the judgment of the women of America to make decisions based on what is in their best interest. We trust the women of America to make those decisions about their own bodies.”

Alvord responded, incorrectly: “The baby is not part of the body of a woman. The umbilical chord and placenta do not directly connect to the woman. The baby floats inside the woman. It is not about the woman’s body, it’s to kill then remove the baby’s body. It is done in greater proportion to black babies.”

The umbilical “chord” and placenta do not directly connect to the woman? Does this whiz kid imagine that the placenta just sort of manifests the nutrients and oxygen a fetus needs to survive and grow? It just all kinda comes from nowhere? If so, then why do we need human beings to go through pregnancy and labor and delivery? Why are we doing this very burdensome, dangerous thing if apparently the uterus and the entire human being around the uterus are not providing anything but a little space for a placenta, umbilical cord, and fetus to float around in?

Reality Winner and the debate over the Espionage Act

Do you remember her? Article from July so it's old around here.

Reality Winner and the debate over the Espionage Act

When a National Security Agency whistleblower leaked a document related to Russia's cyber spying, she says she never expected that she would be charged with espionage herself. Now Reality Winner's high-profile case has resurrected a debate over prosecution of national security leakers.

In 2017, Winner mailed a top-secret document to an online news outlet intending to set the record straight about which foreign entity had interfered in the 2016 presidential election. After he took office, President Donald Trump had continued to equivocate when speaking about Russian interference, including the attack on the Democratic National Committee.

But there had been another hack that targeted the state and local officials who managed voter registration systems. The NSA — and by extension, the White House — had evidence the attack had been carried out by Russian military intelligence. Winner, then an intelligence contractor at the NSA, saw the classified report on an in-house newsfeed in early May 2017.

In an interview with 60 Minutes, Winner told correspondent Scott Pelley she was aware of what she was doing when she anonymously mailed the report to The Intercept.

"I knew it was secret," she said. "But I also knew that I had pledged service to the American people. And at that point in time, it felt like they were being led astray."
