SPLC files groundbreaking lawsuit accusing conversion therapy organization of fraud

The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit today accusing a New Jersey organization of consumer fraud for offering conversion therapy services – a dangerous and discredited practice that claims to convert people from gay to straight.

The lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey, charges that Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (JONAH), its founder, Arthur Goldberg, and counselor Alan Downing violated New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act by providing conversion therapy claiming to cure clients of being gay.

It is the first time a conversion therapy provider has been sued for fraudulent business practices. The lawsuit describes how the plaintiffs – four young men and two of their parents – were lured into JONAH’s services through deceptive practices.

“JONAH profits off of shameful and dangerous attempts to fix something that isn’t broken,” said Christine P. Sun, deputy legal director for the SPLC. “Despite the consensus of mainstream professional organizations that conversion therapy doesn’t work, this racket continues to scam vulnerable gay men and lesbians out of thousands of dollars and inflicts significant harm on them.”

Grayson: Walmart is ‘the largest recipient of public aid in the country’

Source: Raw Story

“Representative-elect Alan Grayson (D-FL) said Monday that he will put mega-retailer Walmart squarely in his sights during the next Congress for the company’s liberal use of public assistance programs to supplement their workers’ wages… Grayson called Walmart “the largest recipient of public aid in the country,” saying their low wages force workers to take food stamps, housing assistance and Medicaid just to get by.

“The taxpayer pays for the earned income credit,” he said. “The taxpayer pays for Medicaid. The taxpayer pays for unemployment insurance when they cut hours down. And the taxpayer pays for other forms of public assistance like food stamps. I think the taxpayer is getting fed up of paying these things when, in fact, Walmart could give every employee its got, even the CEO, a 30 percent raise and still be profitable.”

He added that while the health care mandate in the Affordable Care Act will help, “that’s just the start. In state after state after state, Walmart employees represent the largest group of Medicaid recipients, the largest group of food stamp recipients, and taxpayers shouldn’t have to bear that burden,” Grayson said. “It should be Walmart. So, we’re going to take that burden and put it where it belongs: on Walmart.”

JESUS: Remember: It's My day, not Rupert Murdoch's. You don't want to end up where he's going.

Honestly? It's just a matter of politeness. Some people don't celebrate my birthday, and I try not to make anyone feel uncomfortable about it. I'm like that.

Plus, there are - and I am not exaggerating - a lot of Jewish people in my family. I spent my whole life with them, and yeah, they don't really approve of my career as the Messiah. But families are always like that. You think I want folks celebrating my birthday by taking an entire month to turn America into a sparkly, glowing Gentilepalooza, and making everyone I'm related to feel isolated and weird? Seriously, what kind of massive douche would that make me? If your idea of celebrating my season is making an elderly Wal-Mart greeter offend a few hundred cousins of mine, you just have no idea who I am or what I want.

"Happy holidays," is sincere, accurate, and warm-hearted. What's wrong with it? If you know the other guy worships Me, go ahead, wish him a Merry Christmas. Get crazy with the eggnog, go to midnight service... Stash a mini-manger in every room, if you like. But why would anyone want to put pressure on some big box store to make their signage more Christian? Like the reason I came down here was so I could get wall space at Target.

Look, none of this is really about celebrating Me at all. It's to show that you're a member of a club, and that club has economic and political power. Well, leave Me out of it. I was offered that sort of deal, you know. I had a whole conversation on top of a mountain with someone, and that's exactly what he put on the table. I turned it down. So should you.

Grover Norquist compares signing his Pledge to being married to HIM!

GROVER: "The pledge is not for life, but everybody who signed the pledge, including Peter King, who tried to weasel out of it. 'Shame on him,' as the New York Sun said today. I hope his wife understands that commitments last a little longer than two years or something,"

That's Why They're Called "Capitalist Pigs"

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein is among the executives scheduled to meet with U.S. House Republican leaders on the so- called “fiscal cliff,” according to a House aide and another person familiar with the plans. House Speaker John Boehner is scheduled to meet with a group of CEOs pressing for a solution to the looming tax increases and spending cuts on Nov. 28 in the Capitol building. [Bloomberg]

1% Have Self-Imposed/Manufactured "FISCAL CLIFF" Expecting Us All To BUY What They Say As $$$ Gospel

Top Story — Sen. Patty Murray: If No Revenue from Republicans, Let Tax Cuts Expire, Start Over in 2013
“If the Republicans can’t see their way to significant additional revenues targeted toward the people who are best off and targeted toward passive income and other things like that, then we’re better off going over the cliff and readdressing this with a better Congress in January,” Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) said. “And we would have plenty of time to fix it.” [Politico]

THE SO-CALLED fiscal cliff scheme is in the eye of the beholder. Conventional wisdom is being led by the business community, whose lobbying efforts are strong and loud. As a new CNN poll reveals, the full court press Wall Street has waged, seen daily on CNBC, the most watched financial cable network, is making a dent. This isn’t the first campaign waged on fear that shows signs of working, even if it’s built on pure math myth.

From the AP.

A big coalition of business groups says there must be give-and-take in the negotiations to avoid the “fiscal cliff” of massive tax increases and spending cuts. But raising tax rates — a White House priority — is out of the question, the group adds.

Wall Street’s 1% have self-imposed and manufactured the “fiscal-cliff” through their own angst, expecting everyone to buy what they say as economic gospel. But if we’ve learned anything from the financial crash of ’08 and the subsequent massive malfeasance exposed it’s that no one should trust what our Wall Street business community says at face value. The Wall Street community lost the right to have their word taken as anything but what’s good for their bottom line, with it proven they’ll do anything to protect themselves while everyone else suffers.

Norquist in a nutshell.

Someday someone will write a dark history — a farce, really — of how he managed to bring nearly all of the Republican Party to heel, compelling legislator upon legislator to lash themselves to his no-new-taxes pledge. Until then we’ll have to content ourselves with his misfortune over the last few days. No sooner had a nation digested its turkey than his goose began to be cooked. The spreading rebellion in the Republican ranks was manifest on the post-Thanksgiving Sunday talk shows.

Walmart tries to blame Rogue Supplier-BUT-Photos Taken SHOW Clothing With Walmart's EXCLUSIVE Label

Walmart Blames Rogue Supplier for Apparel Found at Site of Deadly Factory Fire (Updated)

A document on the website of the factory’s owner, Tuba Group, showed that the factory had received an “orange” rating from Walmart in May 2011, because of “violations and/or conditions that were deemed to be high risk.” The same document said that three such ratings within two years would result in a year-long suspension by Walmart.

“Obviously, they didn’t do anything about it,” said Nova. He called Walmart’s internal monitoring system “a joke” that was “set up to enable Walmart to claim that it’s policing, without in any way, shape or form inconveniencing its production process.”

(Walmart initially told The New York Times it was “unable to confirm” the veracity of the Tuba Group document, or whether the factory supplied any Walmart goods).

Photos taken after the fire taken the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity, provided to The Nation by the International Labor Rights Forum, show clothing with Walmart’s exclusive Faded Glory label (photos below). Monday morning, WRC's Nova accused Walmart of intentionally dragging its feet on admitting its connection to the factory, in hopes that by the time the connection is confirmed, the media will have lost interest.
