Stray dogs from Sochi arrive in DC to be adopted

Saved Sochi Dogs Arrive in U.S.

The dogs in DC are at the Washington Animal Rescue League. They have a wonderful facility – the best I’ve ever been to. They have these kind-of swinging barn-door stables set up, so that you can visit each dog individually, at your leisure, just leaning over the bottom door to pet them, then move on to the next dog – without having to ask them to take each dog out, which can really be a disincentive to actually meeting all the dogs. I can’t say enough about the place, was just so impressed. I’m very glad these dogs ended up there.

I guess now you’d call them capitalist dogs

Here’s a video about their arrival:

Hobby Lobby's Hypocrisy: The Company's Retirement Plan INVESTS in Contraception Manufacturers

Hobby Lobby's Hypocrisy: The Company's Retirement Plan Invests in Contraception Manufacturers
When Hobby Lobby filed its case against Obamacare's contraception mandate, its retirement plan had more than $73 million invested in funds with stakes in contraception makers.
—By Molly Redden | Tue Apr. 1, 2014 3:00 AM PDT

Documents filed with the Department of Labor and dated December 2012—three months after the company's owners filed their lawsuit—show that the Hobby Lobby 401(k) employee retirement plan held more than $73 million in mutual funds with investments in companies that produce emergency contraceptive pills, intrauterine devices, and drugs commonly used in abortions. Hobby Lobby makes large matching contributions to this company-sponsored 401(k).

Several of the mutual funds in Hobby Lobby's retirement plan have holdings in companies that manufacture the specific drugs and devices that the Green family, which owns Hobby Lobby, is fighting to keep out of Hobby Lobby's health care policies: the emergency contraceptive pills Plan B and Ella, and copper and hormonal intrauterine devices.

FBI Investigating High-Speed Trading Examination Centers on Possible Trading on Nonpublic Info

FBI Investigating High-Speed Trading
Examination Centers on Possible Trading on Nonpublic Information

.................

The investigation, launched about a year ago, involves a range of trading activities and is still in its early stages, according to a senior FBI official and an agency spokesman. Among the activities being probed is whether high-speed firms are trading ahead of other investors based on information that other market participants can't see.

Among the types of trading under scrutiny is the practice of placing a group of trades and then canceling them to create the false appearance of market activity. Such activity could be considered potential market manipulation by encouraging others to trade based on false orders.

Another form of activity under scrutiny involves using high-speed trading to place orders to conceal that the transactions are based on an illegal tip.

"There are many people in government who are very focused on this and who are concerned about it and who think it breaks the law," an FBI spokesman said. "There is a big concern that high-frequency traders are getting material nonpublic information ahead of others and trading on it."

Juan Cole To Pace Sheldon Adelson: "That ain’t Bugs Bunny."

Pace Sheldon Adelson: Top 5 Signs West Bank is Occupied Territory
By Juan Cole | Mar. 31, 2014 |

(By Juan Cole)
New Jersey governor and presidential hopeful Chris Christie used the term “Occupied Territories” to refer to Gaza and the West Bank in his talk this weekend to Sheldon Adelson’s “Republican Jewish Coalition” in Las Vegas. He was forced to apologize to the uber right wing Adelson.

Here are the top 5 signs Palestine might be occupied:

1. The UN General Assembly partition plan for British Mandate Palestine in 1947, which was extremely generous to the Jewish settlement community of the time, did not award them Gaza or the West Bank, where there were at that time virtually no Jews!

2. Israel militarily conquered Gaza and the West Bank only in 1967. Typically you refer to territories not belonging to a country, which it holds during wartime, as “Occupied Territories”

3. Israel is in violation of over 30 United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding what the UNSC explicitly calls the Occupied Territories. Israel has cited other UNSC Chapter VII resolutions as justification for its own actions, i.e. the 2006 war on Lebanon, but declines to take them seriously with regard to its own behavior toward the Palestinians. http://www.david-morrison.org.uk/sadaka/briefings/BRIEFING-UN_Security_Council_resolutions_contravened_by_Israel.pdf

4. This is what the Palestinian city of al-Khalil (Hebron) looks like:

Zero U.S. Troops Died In Combat In March, The FIRST TIME In More Than A Decade

Zero U.S. Troops Died In Combat In March, The First Time In More Than A Decade
BY HAYES BROWN ON MARCH 31, 2014

After more than ten years and thousands of lives lost, finally a month without combat deaths.

March 2014 marked the first time in more than a decade that there were zero U.S. fatalities among American troops engaging in combat, according to numbers from the Department of Defense.
http://www.defense.gov/news/casualty.pdf

After a decade at war in the post-9/11 environment, with major wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and smaller conflicts in the various other countries where the U.S. uses more covert methods to fight against terrorism, the lack of combat deaths in March 2014 marks a milestone. In Iraq, the death toll reached 4,474 before the last soldier fell in November 2011. For years after the war’s launch in 2003, no months passed where at least one American didn’t die in battle and then only towards the end of the conflict did the numbers taper off enough to have a month where the only fatalities were non-combat related.

Based on information collected at the website iCasualties, which pulls from Pentagon data, it is the first time since July 2007 that no Americans were killed in Afghanistan in support of Operation: Enduring Freedom. The worst single month for U.S. forces in that conflict was July 2010, amid the summer fighting season, during which 65 Americans died. At that point, 98,000 American forces were stationed in Afghanistan amid the surge of 30,000 additional soldiers into the country. To date, 3,481 U.S. military personnel have lost their life in Afghanistan.

While this marks a low point in deaths among American soldiers, the same cannot be said of the coalition forces fighting alongside the U.S. — two allied soldiers died over the course of the month. It also doesn’t mean that the situation in the two countries the United States has fought wars in over the last country are also free from strife. As NATO forces prepare to withdraw combat troops at the end of the year, violence in Afghanistan is currently threatening the ability of observers to verify its pending election. And in Iraq, 16 civilians died in an attack just this weekend. (HT: Kevin Sieff)

Christie's "Internal Investigation" Becomes A New Scandal (Governor's lawyers to be subpoenaed)

Christie's bridge scandal lawyers to be subpoenaed

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey legislative committee probing a political payback operation carried out by Gov. Chris Christie's aides and associates plans to subpoena interview transcripts and other documents from the lawyers the governor hired to carry out an internal investigation, the committee co-chairman said Monday.

Assemblyman John Wisniewski said lawyers retained by the Christie administration to conduct an internal investigation into the blocking of traffic near the George Washington Bridge appeared to have access to information that the committee hasn't seen.

Wisniewski also said lawyers at the firm, Gibson Dunn, appeared to withhold documents subpoenaed by the legislative panel while their own report on the lane closings was being compiled.

CIA misled on interrogation program, Senate report says

Source: WAPO

............................................

The report, built around detailed chronologies of dozens of CIA detainees, documents a long-standing pattern of unsubstantiated claims as agency officials sought permission to use — and later tried to defend — excruciating interrogation methods that yielded little, if any, significant intelligence, according to U.S. officials who have reviewed the document.

“The CIA described (its program) repeatedly both to the Department of Justice and eventually to Congress as getting unique, otherwise unobtainable intelligence that helped disrupt terrorist plots and save thousands of lives,” said one U.S. official briefed on the report. “Was that actually true? The answer is no.”

Current and former U.S. officials who described the report spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue and because the document remains classified. The 6,300-page report includes what officials described as damning new disclosures about a sprawling network of secret detention facilities, or “black sites,” that was dismantled by President Obama in 2009.

CIA employees left the agency’s secret prison in Thailand after becoming disturbed by the brutal measures being employed there. The report also cites cases in which officials at CIA headquarters demanded the continued use of harsh interrogation techniques even after analysts were convinced that prisoners had no more information to give.
