As the facts emerge, you begin to see the motivation behind these infrastructure deniers

No one did a better job of explaining the source of this curious apathy toward passenger rail last week than the New Yorker’s Adam Gopnik:

The will to abandon the public way is not some failure of understanding, or some nearsighted omission by shortsighted politicians. It is part of a coherent ideological project. As I wrote a few years ago, in a piece on the literature of American declinism, “The reason we don’t have beautiful new airports and efficient bullet trains is not that we have inadvertently stumbled upon stumbling blocks; it’s that there are considerable numbers of Americans for whom these things are simply symbols of a feared central government, and who would, when they travel, rather sweat in squalor than surrender the money to build a better terminal.” The ideological rigor of this idea, as absolute in its way as the ancient Soviet conviction that any entering wedge of free enterprise would lead to the destruction of the Soviet state, is as instructive as it is astonishing. And it is part of the folly of American “centrism” not to recognize that the failure to run trains where we need them is made from conviction, not from ignorance.

.....they’ve deliberately starved our transportation system of federal funds, and with the cracks are starting to show, they want desperately to deny cause-and-effect to ensure that they’re not saddled with responsibility for the real-world consequences of their political philosophy.

Coal giant exploited Ebola crisis for corporate gain, say health experts Public health experts

Coal giant exploited Ebola crisis for corporate gain, say health experts
Public health experts outraged after world’s largest privately-held coal company, Peabody Energy, promotes its product in the fight against Ebola in Africa as part of a PR campaign to rebrand the fossil fuel as a solution to global poverty

Public health experts involved in the response to the Ebola crisis have condemned what they described as a ludicrous, insulting and opportunistic attempt to exploit the disease for corporate gain by the world’s largest privately-held coal company.

As part of a PR offensive to rebrand coal as a “21st-century fuel” that can help solve global poverty, it has emerged that at the height of Ebola’s impact in Africa, Peabody Energy promoted its product as an answer to Africa’s devastating public health crisis.

Greg Boyce, the chief executive of Peabody, a US-based multinational with mining interests around the world, included a slide on Ebola and energy in a presentation to a coal industry conference in September last year. The slide suggested that more energy would have spurred the distribution of a hypothetical Ebola vaccine – citing as supporting evidence a University of Pennsylvania infectious disease expert.

The World Health Organisation believes nearly 27,000 people contracted Ebola in an outbreak of the virus in West Africa last year, and more than 11,000 died – although the international agency believes that is probably an underestimate.

Elizabeth Warren Fires Back at Obama with New Report On Failed Trade Enforcement

LABOR
Elizabeth Warren Fires Back at Obama with New Report On Failed Trade Enforcement
There's been a dismal record on enforcing labor standards.

By Zaid Jilani / AlterNet May 20, 2015

One way supporters of the Trans-Pacific Partnership have defended the agreement is to boast that it features supposedly strong labor and environmental standards. The White House has called it the “most progressive trade agreement in history.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) this week put out a new report pointing out that even in the trade agreements we currently have, the Obama administration and previous administrations have failed to enforce these labor standards. Here are two of the highlights:

* Failed Enforcement Of Child Labor Laws: Warren notes that Colombia, which we signed a free trade agreement with during the first Obama term, continues to produce at least eight products, such as coffee and sugarcane, with child or forced labor. The report shows that ten different countries we have free trade agreements with have been identified by the Department of Labor as continuing to utilizing child labor.

* Violence Against Labor Unions: One of the biggest complaints fair trade advocates have about our trade agreements is that they fail to protect the rights of workers to organize. The Warren report looks at violence against labor union organizers in several countries we currently have free trade agreements with. She notes that despite the fact that the United States put together a Labor Action Plan with Colombia alongside the trade agreement, 105 unionists in that country have been murdered there over the previous four years.

The Girl Scouts of America announce they will accept transgender kids

Q: What is Girl Scouts' position on serving transgender youth?

A: Girl Scouts is proud to be the premiere leadership organization for girls in the country. Placement of transgender youth is handled on a case-by-case basis, with the welfare and best interests of the child and the members of the troop/group in question a top priority. That said, if the child is recognized by the family and school/community as a girl and lives culturally as a girl, then Girl Scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and physically safe.

Q: How does Girl Scouts' position on serving transgender youth apply to situations involving camping or volunteers?

A: These situations are rare and are considered individually with the best interests of all families in mind. Should any girl requiring special accommodations wish to camp, GSUSA recommends that the local council makes similar accommodation that schools across the country follow in regard to changing, sleeping arrangements, and other travel-related activities. With respect to volunteers, Girl Scouts welcomes both male and female adult volunteers and has developed appropriate safeguards regarding roles and responsibilities to ensure that girls receive the proper supervision and support.

UBS to Plead Guilty on Libor, Settle Currency Probe With Fed

Source: Bloomberg

UBS Group AG will pay $545 million to settle U.S. investigations into its role in manipulating currency and interest rates, removing two of the bank’s biggest legal hurdles.

The lender’s main unit, UBS AG, will plead guilty to fraud for manipulating benchmark interest rates and pay $203 million in fines after the Swiss bank violated an agreement that had allowed it to avoid prosecution, UBS said in a statement Wednesday.

In the currency case, UBS said it will pay $342 million to the Federal Reserve, which regulates foreign banks, and undertake remedial measures. It won immunity for cooperating in a parallel antitrust probe, sparing the bank possible fines and felony charges on that score.

Four other global banks are expected to announce U.S. settlements Wednesday over manipulating foreign exchange rates, people with knowledge of the discussions have said. Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Barclays Plc and Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc will probably enter pleas related to antitrust violations, the people said.

BOSTON WRKO dropping Limbaugh from its lineup-latest reminder that Rush Limbaugh is bad for business

WRKO dropping Limbaugh from its lineup is just the latest reminder that Rush Limbaugh is bad for business.

Rush Limbaugh's Boston radio affiliate WRKO has announced it is dropping Limbaugh's talk show from its lineup. Limbaugh's syndicator, Premiere, confirmed the news in a statement, which reads in part: "We were unable to reach agreeable terms for The Rush Limbaugh Show to continue on WRKO. A final broadcast date will be announced in the near future."

WRKO has now become the second major radio station in recent weeks to drop Limbaugh's program. Limbaugh's longtime Indianapolis affiliate WIBC severed ties with him in April. WIBC's parent company noted that Limbaugh's absence could actually improve its advertiser prospects.

The commercial viability of Rush Limbaugh's show has suffered since 2012, when advertisers began fleeing the program in the wake of Limbaugh's prolonged attack on then-law student Sandra Fluke. The Wall Street Journal has reported on the millions of dollars in advertising revenue stations who carry Limbaugh's show lose, as well as the industry-wide damage resulting from Limbaugh's toxicity to advertisers. Notably, according to the report, the exodus of national advertisers has played a significant part in reducing talk radio advertising rates to about half of what it costs to run ads on music stations, even though the two formats have "comparable audience metrics."
