Lindsey Graham says the quiet part out loud

Asked Lindsey Graham if it’s racist to chant “send her back,” and he said: “No, I don’t think it’s racist to say, was it racist to say love it or leave it? I don’t think a Somali refugee embracing Trump would have been asked to go back.

If only someone had warned us.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton today disparaged her Republican rival as a tool of the racist, radical right, a man who foments “paranoia and prejudice” and ushers hate groups into the mainstream.

Donald Trump is “a man with a long history of racial discrimination”, Clinton said during a Thursday rally in the flag-festooned student center at Truckee Meadows Community College. He is a man “who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far reaches of the internet”.
…..
“This is not conservatism as we have known it,” she continued. “This is not Republicanism as we have known it. These are racist ideas, race-baiting ideas, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-women, all key tenets making up the emerging racist ideology known as the alt-right.”

“The de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump campaign represents a landmark achievement for the ‘alt-right’,” Clinton declared. “A fringe element has effectively taken over the Republican party. All of this adds up to something we’ve never seen before.

“Of course, there’s always been a paranoid fringe in our politics, steeped in racial resentment,” she continued. “But it’s never had the nominee of a major party stoking it, encouraging it, and giving it a national megaphone. Until now.”

"Silence is not an option."

Quote of the Day

“I challenge every Republican to watch Donald Trump’s rally last night, complete with chants of ‘Send her back,’ and ask if that is the Party of Lincoln and Reagan we signed up for. We are in a fight for the soul of the GOP, and silence is not an option.”

— Former Gov. William Weld (R), on Twitter.

Charles M. Blow at The New York Times writes--What Trump Is Teaching Our Children:

[Donald Trump] is everything we teach our children not to be. In Trump’s world of immorality, the lessons being taught undo all the principles parents struggle to instill.

He is teaching our children that there is no absolute truth, there is “alternative fact.” It’s not what you say, but how you say it and how vociferously you can defend it.

He is teaching little boys that women’s bodies exist as playgrounds for privileged men, and that there is no price to be paid if you are popular enough or rich enough.

He is teaching little girls that if they are ever victims of sexual assault by a popular, wealthy boy and deign to reveal it, they will likely to come under withering verbal assault.

He is teaching our children that the color of one’s skin does indeed supersede the content of one’s character. He is teaching them that there is a skin-color hierarchy in which whiteness is perched on top.

He is teaching the black and brown children that their citizenship and connection to this country is tenuous and fractional, not like white children.

Federal judge permanently blocks Trump admin from adding citizenship question to 2020 census

Federal judge permanently blocks Trump admin from adding citizenship question to 2020 census

(CNN)A New York federal judge has issued an order definitively blocking the Trump administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census in any form, despite the administration's insistence it has abandoned plans to add a question on the census.

Judge Jesse Furman, in his two-page order, also indicated the seriousness with which the court will continue to monitor this controversial issue, saying,"The Court will retain jurisdiction in this case to enforce the terms of this Order until the 2020 census results are processed and sent to the President by December 31, 2020."

President Donald Trump announced last week that he will seek citizenship information from agencies that already collect the data following the following the Supreme Court's decision in June that kept a lower court's order to block a citizenship question from the census in place.

Trump repeatedly said he would continue fighting to insert the question despite the court's ruling before ultimately issuing an executive order last week directing the Commerce Department to obtain citizenship data through means other than the census instead of attempting to put the question on census forms, or adding it separately. The order covers the Department of Homeland Security, which houses citizenship and asylum services, and the Social Security Administration.
