?1565154211El Paso Representative refuses to be a pawn to Trumps's photo op tomorrow
Rep. Veronica Escobar, who represents that El Paso area, says that she declined an invitation from the White House to join Trump on his El Paso visit because he wouldn't take her call before the visit. https://twitter.com/RepEscobar/status/1158854169903501312
@RepEscobar
The White House invited me to join
@realDonaldTrump
during his visit to El Paso. My response was clear. I requested a phone call with him today in order to share what I have now heard from many constituents, including some who are victims of Saturdays attack.
I declined the invitation because I refuse to be an accessory to his visit. I refuse to join without a dialogue about the pain his racist and hateful words & actions have caused our community and country.

Trump Is a White Nationalist Who Inspires Terrorism - Don't pretend otherwise
Michelle Goldberg, New York Times
Trump Is a White Nationalist Who Inspires Terrorism Dont pretend his teleprompter speech changes anything.
Surrendering to political necessity, Trump gave a brief speech on Monday decrying white supremacist terror: In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy. He read these words robotically from a teleprompter, much as he did after the racist riot in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017, when, under pressure, he said, Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs.
Back then, it took about a day for the awkward mask of minimal decency to drop; soon, he was ranting about the very fine people among the neo-Nazis. Nevertheless, on Monday some insisted on pretending that Trumps words marked a turning point. He really did set a different tone than he did in the past when it comes to condemning this hate, said Weijia Jiang, White House correspondent for CBS News.
If history is any guide, it wont be long before the president returns to tweeting racist invective and encouraging jingoist hatreds at his rallies. In the meantime, everyone should be clear that what Trump said on Monday wasnt nearly enough. He has stoked right-wing violence and his administration has actively opposed efforts to fight it. Further, hes escalating his incitement of racial grievance as he runs for re-election, as shown by his attacks on the four congresswomen of color known as the squad, as well as the African-American congressman Elijah Cummings. One desultory speech does not erase Trumps politics of arson, or the complicity of the Republicans who continue to enable it.

KRUGMAN: the G.O.P. has become a systematic enabler of terrorism. Why? Follow the money.
..........
The central story of U.S. politics since the 1970s is the takeover of the Republican Party by economic radicals, determined to slash taxes for the wealthy while undermining the social safety net.
With the arguable exception of George H.W. Bush, every Republican president since 1980 has pushed through tax cuts that disproportionately benefited the 1 percent while trying to defund and/or privatize key social programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
..............
In effect, then, the Republican Party decided that a few massacres were an acceptable price to pay in return for tax cuts. I wish that were hyperbole, but the continuing refusal of G.O.P. figures to criticize Trump even after El Paso shows that its the literal truth.
So as I said at the beginning, the G.O.P. has become a systematic enabler of terrorism. Why? Follow the money.

Trump calls for 'love, unity and bipartisanship to prevent more mass shootings, but keeps pushing NRA talking points
President Trump pledged Monday to act with urgent resolve against the scourge of gun violence in the wake of mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, but offered few details on how he plans to do so and kept pushing gun lobby talking points.
Blaming mental illness and video games but not the sweeping availability of military-grade weapons, Trump delivered the limp promises in a national address from the White House, as the death toll rose to 31 from the weekend massacres in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.
"These barbaric slaughters are an assault upon our communities, an attack upon our nation and a crime against all of humanity, Trump said. We vow to act with urgent resolve.
In the address, Trump also offered a forceful condemnation of racism, bigotry and white supremacy," as authorities said the suspect in Saturdays El Paso shooting had likely posted a racist manifesto online decrying the Hispanic invasion of Texas" before the senseless assault.
But the president offered no acknowledgement that the suspected gunmans alleged screed directly mirrored some of his own anti-immigrant rhetoric.
