Pope Francis: I am not a liberal

Pope Francis: I am not a liberal

Shortly before Pope Francis touched down on U.S. soil for the first time on Tuesday, he assured journalists that he is not a liberal, according to reports.

“Some people might say some things sounded slightly more left-ish, but that would be a mistake of interpretation,” Francis said aboard his flight from Cuba to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

“It is I who follows the church ... my doctrine on all this ... on economic imperialism, is that of the social doctrine of the church," Francis added, according to Time.

Francis arrived to cheers and chants welcoming him to the U.S. when he landed outside Washington, D.C., where he will address a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday, with speculation running rampant about what he might discuss.

Scalia is sad & that makes me happy.

In his speech, Scalia distinguished "originalism," which calls for adherence to the original text and meaning of the Constitution when interpreting it, from the theory of a "living" Constitution, which views the document as one that evolves and changes over time without being amended.

"They're not adhering to the text, they're operating as policy makers," Scalia, an "originalist," said of believers in a "living" Constitution. "They're not interpreting the constitution. They're writing one, they're revising one."

...................

On Tuesday, he called the same-sex marriage ruling "the furthest imaginable extension of the Supreme Court doing whatever it wants."

Scalia also noted that only one sitting Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas, is from the South: The others are from California, New York and New Jersey. He said believers of a "living" Constitution should be upset by that.

"You should be upset because these people are making a new Constitution and they are terribly unrepresentative of the country," he said.

The Pope would probably give me penance for smiling (I would just tell him I am from California):

The President vs Republicans

A study in contrasts?

The President welcomes a man who seeks a better world for all,
and Republicans invited the warmonger Bibi.

POPE:
Please remind the GOP of the billions being wasted on their interest in war.
Time for peace and better world.

WH: Pope SMACKs GOP

POPE: As the son of an immigrant, I’m happy to be a guest in this country,
which was largely built by such families.”

UPDATE TO ADD:

Francis introduced himself to the crowd in his first sentence as “the son of an immigrant” – his family came from Italy to Argentina – and described the United States as “largely built by such families.”

The words are likely to resonate at a time where the political debate in the United States has been marked by a divisive debate over immigration

.......................

Mr. President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our “common home”, we are living at a critical moment of history. We still have time to make the changes needed to bring about “a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change” (Laudato Si’, 13). Such change demands on our part a serious and responsible recognition not only of the kind of world we may be leaving to our children, but also to the millions of people living under a system which has overlooked them. Our common home has been part of this group of the excluded which cries out to heaven and which today powerfully strikes our homes, our cities and our societies. To use a telling phrase of the Reverend Martin Luther King, we can say that we have defaulted on a promissory note and now is the time to honor it.

Pope will dine with homeless, not politicians after addressing Congress

Democrats could find themselves criticized for support of abortion and same-sex marriage, policies that conflict with the doctrine of the Catholic Church.

And the gesture Francis will make by going directly to lunch with homeless people rather than with his congressional hosts after his speech on Capitol Hill will resonate on both sides of the aisle.

"He is a walking, talking parable," said Carr. "This is a Pope who looks at the world from the bottom up and from the outside in. I think he brings to Congress and the White House a different perspective than they are used to hearing."

And that perspective could be galling for both parties.
