You can locate a zone of plausible deniability, in which one can claim support for such policies on pragmatic, economic or “cultural” grounds, and not out of any desire to make the United States whiter.
It’s precisely this zone that Republicans now seek to inhabit.

That’s why the GOP panic about the “send her back” chant is significant.
It shines a floodlight into this zone and reveals why it’s so hard to credibly inhabit it.

Charles M. Blow says "Denying Racism Supports It"

Make no mistake: Denying racism or refusing to call it out is also racist. You cannot claim to be egalitarian and anti-racism and choose to be closeted among family and friends or even in your community for fear of rejection and ostracism, or as is often used as an excuse, to keep the peace.

There is no peace for the targets of racism, so your choosing of personal comfort and the comfort of racists supports the commission of racial injury.

If you are just coming to call Trump’s behavior racist — or, worse yet, if you still can’t bring yourself to do so — you are part of the problem. You are supporting that architecture of white racism.

"Send her back" is meant as a deterrent to all women

...What made “Send her back” such a horrifying chant was not how specific it was but how generic...It was that, at President Trump’s rally this week, we saw the dramatic unveiling of a castigation that could now be used against any woman not behaving as she should…

...Send who? Send her…

…“Send her back” is the granddaughter of “Lock her up,”

“Lock her up” seemed to be about that woman and that incident, at that moment in time...

...But then the chant resurfaced, and it wasn’t in reference to Clinton. It was in reference to Christine Blasey Ford…At another rally a week later, the chant morphed into an attack on Sen. Dianne Feinstein…

...Lock up who? Lock up her…

...The “her” had become fungible. Any woman could become a woman who should be locked up; it required only running afoul of what Trump thought she should be doing…

...“It’s meant as a deterrent to all women...”

Donald Trump and the GOP hate America

...........

If you love America, Donald, why are you poisoning its waterways? It’s the American people who drink the water that you’re allowing irresponsible companies to dump literal actual poisons into.

If you love America, Donald, why are you letting its citizens get ripped off by scam artists with no repercussions?

If you love America, Donald, why are you destroying our national forests?

If you love America, Donald, why are you gutting the USDA, which protects the American people from eating bad food that can make us sick or even kill us?

If you love America, why did you stand there in Helsinki and make treasonous statements beside the man who attacked our democracy? If you love America, why did you accept and encourage the Russian government’s meddling in our election? If you love America, why do you deny that this happened when the people whose jobs it is to protect America are telling you that it did?

And perhaps most salient of all, if you love America so much, why do you hate so many of its people, including many of its most inspiring success stories?

You hate America, Donald. You hate everything that makes America what it is. You hate our diversity. You hate our freedom of the press. You hate our freedom of speech. If they cost businesses a single dollar, you hate the regulations that keep us alive and healthy. You love nothing but yourself… and perhaps Ivanka.
