I don't mind all the infighting and name calling and baiting that goes on at DU. It is part of the fun of politics. But when Gen Discussion is full of posts about how "This Dem is all bad!" and "No, this Dem is all good and THAT Dem is all bad!" and "You're a Poo Poo Head if You Don't Love This Dem and Hate that Dem" and "No, You're the Poo Poo Head!" there is a tendency to dilute all the meaningful threads about Trump and GOP atrocities which are what I come to DU for.
Dear Skinner, DU is a product like any other. A not for profit product with a mission statement, but still a product. Democrats are united in their fear and loathing for Trump, Putin and their GOP enablers. We want to discuss this problem and work on ways to fix it. We want to do this is a forum where it is easy to share ideas and information. It is not easy to share ideas or information if the first page of Gen Discussion and the "Greatests" are devoted to other less pressing though certainly brights and shiny and distracting topics.
In the past, DU has had separate White House threads. I think it is time to have one again. Can anyone think of a more pressing problem right now than the current Resident President? Trump can literally destroy this country. That kind of threat needs a forum all its own.
And meanwhile, Democrats who do not think Trump is a threat can play "Who is a more ideologically pure Democrat" to their hearts content in Gen Discussion.
If there is a White House forum already, will someone please direct me to it?

Don't look now, but a really old and nasty narrative has seized the country. The one that goes (insert name of the scapegoat that you want your followers to fear so that they will give up their civil liberties) preys upon white women. The whiter and blonder and younger the better (for your fascist organizations purposes).

Why Do Americans Still Embrace "Droit du Seigneur"?
"Droit du Seigneur", the right of noble men to "have their way" with subordinate women. Why is Trump president and Franken is on his way out? Because of the belief that the rich are not like the rest of us, and that any "inferior" woman who receives the sexual attentions of a rich man has been blessed.
This is as much a class issue as it is a gender issue, and until we rid ourselves of the notion that some of us are "more equal" than others, there will be two standards, one for those who hold themselves up as mere mortals (i.e human beings) and another for those who claim to be demi-gods.
Are Guilty Corporations Trying to Neuter Congress in Case There Are Impeachment Hearings?
Yes, I know this post is too long by modern DU standards. But I have a serious point to make here. I think maybe we are seeing a pre-emptive strike by some VIPs who do not want their names dragged through the mud (where they ought to be) during impeachment hearings.
Take close look at the politicians who are being targeted:
John Conyers was brilliant during the Clinton impeachment. The voice of reason. Able to wade through many layers of bullshit to get to the truth. He dared to hold hearings (in a basement) after the Grand Theft Election Ohio in 2004, when everyone else was too scared to utter a peep.
And we all know how good Sen. Franken is at cross examination.
So, you have to wonder, is someone associated with the Trump-Russian treason trying to weed out Democrats that won't "play along" when/if the Dems win a House majority in 2018 and there are impeachment hearings in 2019?
We all know that the Dems won't get a 2/3 majority of the Senate, so Trump won't get kicked out that way. But during the hearings there will be a lot testimony that is damaging to the Trump name brand. And maybe some collateral damage to some big players that have managed to stay out of the spotlight so far. Like....
Tillerson's company, Exxon. Does anyone here believe that Exxon did not know what Russia was up to? Maybe Exxon is working behind the scene to weed out Democrats who might not respect their corporate "betters" at Exxon. Or maybe it is the Koch Brothers. They have managed to stay out of the limelight so far, even though we know that the Kochs and Russia go way back. What about the mystery backers of the Border Wall? Did someone pay Trump a bribe to get that contract? Or maybe DOW Chemical decided that it wanted the Texas Rio Grande River under federal control so that it could use all that water for its polluting factories? DOW is always after water. And DOW gave big to Trumps inauguration.
After WWII, the Nuremberg judges sent a lot of Nazis to their deaths. But the German businessmen who were complicit in the war crimes got wrist slaps. Which is ironic when you consider that fascism exists to serve the corporations. Or so said Mussolini.
Is Trump's fascist coup now attempting to protect its corporate masters? Exxon, DOW, Kochs---all three have a lot to lose if they are found to be complicit. Maybe they want to weed out the nosy Dems, the bad Dems, the Dems who might not know their place and understand that it is one thing to convict politicians of crimes and quite another to sully the name of a major corporation.
And if the tough Congressional Democrats are cut down, who will dare to take their places? No one. The rest will be too scared. They will dutifully go after bit players and politicians and foreigners and avoid doing anything that might inconvenience a business giant. Like Exxon. Or Dow. Or the Kochs.
Appreciation Thread for Sen Franken!
Who asked the right question during the Sessions confirmation? Sen. Franken. Whose quick thinking caused Sessions to commit perjury about his ties to Russia during a Congressional hearing? Sen. Franken! What did Sessions' perjury about his ties to Russia cause him to do? (For those who have short attention span) It forced him to recuse himself from the federal investigation into Russia interference in a U.S. presidential election. With Sessions no longer obstructing the Department of Justice, what did the DOJ do next? They appointed a special prosecutor, Mueller.
That's right. Because Sen. Franken is fucking brilliant and dedicated and fearless, we now have an official federal investigation of the administration and Russia. Indictments are already being handed down and people are getting lawyered up and there is hope that the fiasco that was the 2016 presidential election will never happen in this country again.
Who here thinks that Sessions would have allowed a special prosecutor to be named, if he still had control of the DOJ in matters pertaining to Russia?
Sen Franken is the reason we have Special Prosecutor Mueller. I haven't forgotten it, and I know damn well that Trump, Sessions and Putin have not forgotten it.Russia hates Sen. Franken as much as I love him. If--no make then when, their scheme to take over our country fails, we will all owe one man a huge round of applause. And, I hope and pray that he is in the Senate when Trump is impeached, because you know he will ask all the right questions and say all the right things---which may be why Russia the GOP are trying so hard to get rid of him.
As to why a handful of Dems are acting against their own party's interest, maybe they are old school Dems who think that members of our party should never take their gloves off in a fight. You know, the same member of the old school who could not be bothered to try Bush and Cheney with war crimes. I believe that when our country is under attack by foreign powers with the aid of American traitors, the gloves need to come off and we need to fight back. Not very kumbaya of me, I know. But I didn't start this war.

If Dems Can Not Win Control of DU, How Can We Win an Election?
I look at the front page and I see 8 out of 10 threads in the "trending" and "greatest" devoted to Kompromat! Kompromat, as in KGB/Russian/GOP dirty trick number one---sex smears against enemies of the KGB/GOP.
If we can not control our own message on our own message boards, there is no way in hell we will be able to craft the message we need to win in 2018. We will be too busy being divided and conquered and making apologies for things that need no apology because they never happened.
I love DU, but someone needs to take charge. This is literally worse than the Russia hack after the election. During DU's down time, we knew we were being silenced. Now, some of us may be under the impression that we are making our voices heard, when in fact we are singing to the Kremlin's tune.
DU is drowning in a sea of Kompromat. Can someone throw us a life preserver, please? Or maybe start a special forum for all the discussion of all the sex smears. Sort of like the special forums we have for contentious topics like the Middle East. With moderators whose job is to keep agitators from killing DU from within.

Producers II: Republican Congress Courting Big Donors--But Will They Deliver?
At first glance, it looks like a GOP Controlled Congress that has lost its collective mind. But what if the insanity is all an act? What if we are witnessing the con-job of the century?
Way back when (2013) I wrote a silly little story about a pair of grifters who decide to exploit Citizens United in order to collect lots of legal political contributions by running a phony campaign---and of course, due to unforeseen circumstances, they win.

In 2016, we saw Trump do the same thing. He promised everything to everybody---including Russia and Putin and Big Business and the Working Class, all of whom have mutually exclusive economic needs---and then was forced to deliver on his ( mutually exclusive) promises when Russia successfully hacked the election. A story that readers would have decried as "Implausible!" if we did not all see it happen.
In recent weeks, national politics has taken another implausible turn. Congressional Republicans are jumping sharks that no politician has ever jumped before. They are in the process of delivering huge tax cuts to the wealthy aka the Reviled 1% complete with scribbled in amendments that no one has even read. Next on their agenda---they plan to cut federal funding for housing, nutrition and health care for the elderly aka our Beloved Old Folks. They are about to make it even easier for gunmen to shoot up churches and country western music concerts---churches and country western music for chrissake! They are willing to let CHIPS expire---no more health care for kids. And they are willing to kill the Dream Act---because, apparently the sins of the father must be visited upon the children Never mind that the average American thinks that being fair to kids is a good old fashioned American value. Land of opportunity and all that.
Why are Republicans in Congress emulating Scrooge in front of the national press right before Christmas? Why are they going out of their way to act like total dicks with an all important midterm election coming up? With a massively unpopular president of their own party in the White House, meaning that many of them could lose their seats?
I think that Congressional Republicans have given up trying to win elections. I think they are putting on a performance designed to solicit campaign contributions from the NRA, the Kochs, Big Oil, the Banksters and, of course, any foreign power that would like to increase its influence in Washington or simply bust a foreign born criminal out of a US jail. I think that Congressional Republicans are staging a huge fund raiser. And, when skeptical donors ask "Are you sure that you can keep your promise to make slavery legal again in this country?" or "Do you really think that the voters in your district will go along with your plan to turn their Social Security savings over to our bank?" House Republicans smile and whisper "Sure. Don't forget, we have Russian hackers on our side." Wink wink. Nudge, nudge.
I will go one step further. I do not have a crystal ball nor do I have any flies on any walls in any smoke filled rooms, but I will bet that at this very moment, Steve Banyon is holding court, like a giant, bloated spider in the middle of his web, telling anyone with a million dollars to spare "I can get you what you want. Give me the money and I will buy the politicians and Putin will deliver the 'votes'" Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
I think that folks like McConnell and Ryan and even Trump who are being blackmailed by Russia---politicians who are living under the Sword of Damocles---would like nothing better than to get out of public life. A "pee tape" of Citizen Trump has no value. A "pee tape" of President Trump is priceless. But these politicians don't want to leave DC empty handed, dependent upon the kindness of strangers. They want to leave as rich men. And so, they are staging a cart and pony show, with the U.S. taxpayer as the poor, burdened pony being forced to haul a cart of full of loot which will be squirreled away in Swiss bank accounts and Dubai condos. Because Citizens United does not say how a politician has to spend all the lawfully collected (foreign as well as domestic) bribe money. Citizens United protects the rights of the the ignorant, the gullible, the greedy, the "money simple" and the senile rich folks of this country as well as the rest of the world to pour their money into GOP coffers---of candidates who are fast making themselves unelectable. Unless you believe that Putin's Russian hackers can perform miracles.

Word of Warning...Do Not Rely Upon Mueller to Save Us
We made that mistake with Fitz.
The proper response right now is to take to the streets to protest the tax cuts for the wealthy and every other crime that has or will be committed by the traitors in our midst. However, it is easier to sit back and say "Wait until Mueller gets done with them."
What happens if Mueller accomplishes nothing. Where are we then?
News that Flynn has flipped does not relieve us of our civic responsibility. That said, when is the next March on Washington?
