Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer, who recently pleaded guilty for his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot, was apparently assaulted with human feces while behind bars. Schaffer’s lawyer recently went into detail about the alleged incident, claiming Schaffer also received death threats while locked up.
Schaffer became one of the faces of the attempted insurrection after a photo of him inside the Capitol Building began making the rounds. Schaffer turned himself in to authorities on Jan. 17 and ultimately spent 89 days in jail before being released to await sentencing.
The guitarist and Oathkeeper member pleaded guilty to obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress and Trespassing on restricted grounds of the Capitol while armed with a deadly or dangerous weapon. Though Schaffer could spend up to 30 years in prison, CNN reports that prosecutors and Schaffer’s defense team have agreed to recommend between 3.5 and 4.5 years of prison time. The sentence will ultimately be decided by Judge Amit Mehta.

Mark Meadows pushed Italian satellite vote-changing theory
ASHEVILLE — White House Chief of staff Mark Meadows pushed for an investigation into the idea Italian satellites changed votes in the U.S. election — one of several new revelations from Jan. 6 select committee hearings about the former Western North Carolina congressman as well as another notable figure with ties to the mountains.
The fifth day of the public hearings held June 23 focused on Trump's attempts to get Department of Justice officials to back his false election fraud claims in hopes of overturning the election of Joe Biden. The hearing also showed more links between Meadows and the plot as well as a connection to another WNC notable, Biltmore Forest resident and Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell, whom it was shown Trump wanted to appoint to a special justice position.
Other news included that Meadows agreed to help elevate an attorney who backed false voter fraud claims to a Justice Department leadership role, despite lack of experience, and that Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz asked Meadows for a pardon.

DOJ seizes Nevada GOP chairman’s phone, subpoenas Georgia GOP chairman as fake elector probe grows
The Justice Department on Wednesday served numerous subpoenas to Trump supporters involved in the fake elector scheme in a sign that its probe is expanding.
Federal agents served subpoenas to Georgia GOP Chairman David Shafer, who served as a Trump elector, according to The Washington Post. Other subpoenas were served at the homes of Brad Carver, a Georgia lawyer involved in the fake elector scheme, and Thomas Lane, who worked on the Trump campaign's efforts in Arizona and New Mexico, FBI officials told the outlet. Trump supporters involved in the Michigan fake elector scheme also received subpoenas, though it's unclear if they were related to the federal investigation or a separate state probe. The New York Times reported that Shawn Flynn, a Trump campaign aide in Michigan, was subpoenaed in the federal probe.
FBI agents also served a search warrant at the home of Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald and seized his phone as part of the fake elector probe, according to local news outlet KLAS. A second warrant was issued to state GOP secretary James DeGraffenreid but FBI agents could not track him down on Wednesday.

House passes bill to crack down on alleged gas price gouging
The House of Representatives passed a bill along party lines Thursday that seeks to lower gas prices by cracking down on alleged price gouging by energy companies.
The House vote was 217-207: no Republican supported the bill, suggesting it's likely headed for failure in the Senate.
The Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act would grant the president authority to issue emergency energy proclamations and make it illegal to increase gas and energy prices in excessive and exploitative ways. It would also expand the Federal Trade Commission's power to investigate and address possible price gouging by oil and gas companies.
