In the transcript published by the Post, McCarthy speculates that the Russians hacked the Democratic National Committee’s computers and, in the process, discovered whatever opposition-research materials the Democrats had gathered on Trump.

“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy said, according to Entous, a superb reporter who heard a tape recording of the colloquy. “Swear to God.”

Dana Rohrabacher is a Republican from California with a peculiar amalgam of views: pro-marijuana, dubious about climate change, pro-torture. For this last position, in 2007, Keith Olbermann awarded him his periodic “Worst Person in the World” award, on his old MSNBC show. Like Trump, Rohrabacher has been highly solicitous of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Last year, Politico ran an article on Rohrabacher called “Putin’s Favorite Congressman.”

In the Post piece, McCarthy’s remark is met with laughter, and Ryan cautions his colleagues, “This is an off the record . . . No leaks! . . . All right?”

Simple question: Did Trump attend a 1992 party* w/only Epstein and 28 underage girls @ Mar a Lag?

The year was 1992 and the event was a “calendar girl” competition, something that George Houraney, a Florida-based businessman who ran American Dream Enterprise, had organized at Mr. Trump’s request.

“I arranged to have some contestants fly in,” Mr. Houraney recalled in an interview on Monday. “At the very first party, I said, ‘Who’s coming tonight? I have 28 girls coming.’ It was him and Epstein.”

Mr. Houraney, who had just partnered with Mr. Trump to host events at his casinos, said he was surprised. “I said, ‘Donald, this is supposed to be a party with V.I.P.s. You’re telling me it’s you and Epstein?’”

Daily Kos: AG William Barr, trying to quash Mueller testimony, offers him a way out

How desperate are Donald Trump and his attorney general to keep the American people from hearing the uncomfortable truths special counsel Robert Mueller will surely relay during his testimony next week before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees? This is how desperate: On a visit to a federal prison in South Carolina, Attorney General William Barr took time out to send a public message to his old friend, “Bob.”

Barr is as leery of a “public spectacle” where Mueller pretty much destroys Barr’s own fanciful spin about the Russia report as his boss is. Mueller’s testimony, even if delivered in the understated fashion of a dutiful Boy Scout, is going to unmask Barr to millions as a slippery frontman for Trump—a new Michael Cohen-type “fixer” who just happens to be running the Justice Department. Mueller’s testimony is also certain to enrage Trump.

How could the Justice Department find a decent legal rationale to “back” Mueller’s potential refusal to comply with a congressional subpoena? Who cares? Barr doesn’t. He’ll make some unfounded, legally unprecedented claim, find some chump attorneys who share his personal lack of integrity to help him, and worry about defending that bogus rationale in some court down the road. Because that’s the way hatchet man Bill rolls. Of utmost importance is silencing Mueller, if at all possible. And killing the truth, of course—always killing the truth.
