Black Friday observance

BLACK FRIDAY will find me indulging my usual celebration for that day:

(1) Wardrobe is limited to comfy jammies and fuzzy slippers.
(2) Dust off the turntable and stack the collection of Christmas vinyl.
(3) Unpack the vintage family ornaments.
(4) Decorate the tree while singing along to those old, scratchy records.
(5) Kick back, put my feet up, and sip some egg nog while watching a ridiculously goopy
holiday-themed movie.

Best bargain EVER, and no trampling required.

Tanks

A number of friends drive the Prius or Leaf. Someday I’d like to do the same, but my Social Security check needs to increase ridiculously for that to happen. Meanwhile, my second-hand gasburner has been getting me around for a little over five years.

Today, for the very first time, I was able to fill the tank all the way up. So, on behalf of everyone similarly bracketed , I say

Remembrance and Realization

November 22nd

There are many poignancies that accompany our remembrances on this day. For me, the one that always rises first is the sound of choking sobs that came from my father; a staunch republican and no fan of JFK, he was utterly undone by the assassination. He’d wept quiet tears when his mother died, but this degree of emotion from him was new and shocking. To be sure, the whole nation wept for days on end.

But it was a different time, and that realization has been forcefully driven home over the last few years. Of many changes that have taken place, perhaps the saddest is the increasingly grotesque deterioration of the party that had held my father’s allegiance. Indeed, had today’s republican party been extant in 1963, Dad would have left in disgust. It’s not at all likely that they would have shared the common grief. Based entirely on their own words of hate, accompanied by their actions of massive disrespect that often verge on outright treason, it’s far more likely that they would have danced in the streets.

And that realization is heartbreaking.

The contrast is increasing.

Dear Paul Ryan and Colleagues ~

I’m officially a senior citizen, and have significant disabilities. Social Security is my only source of income, augmented with reliance on food stamps and housing assistance. I’m thinking of having my name legally changed to “Lazy Moocher” so you’ll know who to think of when you’re pushing for welfare recipients to have to pee in front of an audience in order to qualify for benefits.

I genuinely hope this helps to inform your considerations when you get back to work between vacations.

Sincerely,
MSS (soon to be LM)
