Social media blackout hits Department of Energy renewables team

Source: Think Progress

Employees working in a Department of Energy solar program were ordered this week not to share anything about their work on private or professional social media accounts, ThinkProgress has learned.

The directive was given at a staff meeting, according to the email sent Thursday morning, and came from Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Steven Chalk. Another employee confirmed the email’s authenticity.

“I want to share that we are PROHIBITED from any social media post (from personal or business handles) regarding your work, attendance at any meeting, etc until further notice, per Steve Chalk, acting EE-1,” the email reads. The email was sent from a member of the solar program, known as SunShot, to roughly 50 staff members of the same group.

Chalk has been prohibited from speaking with reporters until the department is fully staffed with political appointees, according to the person who answered the phone at his office Thursday.

Bernie Sanders' digital team offers a way for people to call the White House

Source: Mashable

<snip>

WhiteHouseInc.org was created last year with a PAC to push Trump to divest from his businesses while in office. The team that worked on Sanders' digital presidential campaign, Revolution Messaging, is behind the project.

"Until Trump steps away from his businesses for real, their property is no different from the Oval Office."

On the site, callers fill out a form with their email and phone number and then receive a call that connects them to one of Trump's properties — from all over the world and totally randomly. The website is aware that you will probably be connected to a hotel or golf course, but they suggest you "tell management that until Trump steps away from his businesses for real, their property is no different from the Oval Office and you want to talk about the issues that matter most."

<snip>

The site explains that they view his resorts, hotels and clubs as "satellite White Houses all over the world." So if the main line isn't up and running (which on Wednesday evening it was not), this site has a few dozen numbers that connect you to real, living, breathing humans, who like the White House staff, work for Trump.

Compassionate Villagers Knit Giant Sweaters to Keep Rescue Elephants Warm

Source: My Modern Met

Thanks to some compassionate craftspeople, the rescue elephants living at the Wildlife SOS Conservation and Care Center in Mathura, India have been extra cozy during a recent bout of cold weather. In order to keep the pachyderms—who, prior to taking up residence at the sanctuary, tragically suffered neglect, abuse, and exploitation—happy and healthy, the villagers have dedicated their time to knitting colorful and colossal elephant sweaters.

As temperatures began to drop, the good samaritans quickly got to knitting the pajama-like ponchos and onesies. As one can imagine, crafting each giant getup is no small feat. Producing just one sweater can take up to 4 weeks! So far, 3 of the care center’s 23 rescue elephants have received sweaters of their own and, while temperatures have fortunately started to heat up, the knitters are busy at work to have all elephants warm and snug by next winter. In the meantime, those without new knitwear have been given standard blankets that also get the job done—just not as stylishly.

In addition to keeping the gentle giants comfortable, the Technicolor coats are also vital to the delicate creatures’ health and well-being. “It is important to keep our elephants protected from the bitter cold during this extreme winter, as they are weak and vulnerable having suffered so much abuse making them susceptible to ailments such as pneumonia,” SOS cofounder Kartick Satyanarayan explained in a release. “The cold also aggravates their arthritis which is a common issue that our rescued elephants have to deal with.” It is heartwarming to know that these lovely elephants are finally getting the care they deserve.
