Lin-Manuel Miranda and Friends Purchase Drama Book Shop

Lin-Manuel Miranda is already a composer, a lyricist, an actor and an author. Now he’s going to be a bookseller.

Mr. Miranda and three of his “Hamilton” collaborators have purchased the Drama Book Shop, a century-old theater district purveyor of scripts, sheet music and other stage-related reading material.

The surprise move is an effort to sustain the store, which is a mainstay of New York’s theater scene — in 2011 it was recognized with a Tony honor for excellence — but has struggled to survive the brutal Times Square real estate market and recently announced that it was being forced to move from its current location.

The rescue plan is a joint venture between the “Hamilton” team and the city, which has pledged to find the store an affordable space in Midtown.

“The store is a gem and a cultural institution in New York, and we want to make sure it’s saved,” said Julie Menin, the mayor’s media and entertainment commissioner. As precedent for the arrangement with the bookstore, she cited the city’s work with the Berklee College of Music to save a Manhattan recording studio.

Obama: 'We Have A Deficit Of Leadership And We Need New Blood'

The former U.S. president launched a program in Hawaii this weekend aimed at nurturing future leaders in the Asia-Pacific region.

Barack Obama is a little older and a little grayer. But at a speech at the East-West Center’s Hawaii Imin Conference Center Sunday evening, he sounded very much like the hope-and-change leader that vaulted him to the White House in 2008.

The occasion for the speech was a private reception with Obama Foundation guests and community leaders. The nonprofit, nonpartisan foundation was established to “inspire, empower and connect people to change their world,” as a press release this week explained it.

In Obama’s view, the program is a way for he and Michelle Obama to continue caring for the issues they feel deeply about: the environment, income inequality, educational opportunities, the devastation of war, tribal and racial divisions, and the exploitation of people by leaders obsessed with power.

“People cling to power instead of seeing the power in other people,” he said.

Robert Costa: Pay close attention to what this administration is doing...

https://twitter.com/costareports/status/1082455031964676098
Pay close attention to what this administration is doing...

1. Weekend talks with Democrats were futile. Dems there frustrated that Rs didn't have budget numbers ready and OMB had to rush to compile them. Mtgs. instead focused on admin's bleak presentation on border situation

2. POTUS, encouraged by friends on right, increasingly sees a nat'l emergency declaration as a way to rattle empowered Dems and show his core voters he's going to the brink for wall

3. Instead of trying to negotiate to reopen the gov't with a wall-less bill, the admin spent Monday continuing to make its case of a border crisis to reporters and need for $5.7B. VP and @SecNielsen briefed. Laying foundation ahead of POTUS's Tues. speech to nation.

4. My top Trump admin sources say they see little downside to going "all out" now on the wall. Rallies their voters, tests Dems' mettle, and gives POTUS a chance to be seen as fighting on his signature issue ahead of a likely rough year of probes and battles w/ House Dems

5. The only caveat to all of this is that WH knows GOP holding together is critical. That's why POTUS and VP are phoning mbrs. That's in part why there is a speech to nation and trip to border. Direct msg to skittish Rs that this is the line, this is a crisis, so hold on tight.

Only six immigrants in terrorism database stopped by CBP at southern border in first half of 2018

Source: NBC News

U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered only six immigrants on the U.S-Mexico border in the first half of fiscal year 2018 whose names were on a federal government list of known or suspected terrorists, according to CBP data obtained by NBC News.

The low number contradicts statements by Trump administration officials, including White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who said Friday that CBP stopped nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists from crossing the southern border in fiscal year 2018.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen told reporters on Monday the exact number, which NBC News is first to report, was classified but that she was working on making it public.

Overall, 41 people on the Terrorist Screening Database were encountered at the southern border from Oct. 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, but 35 of them were U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Six were classified as non-U.S. persons.

More fear-mongering, no doubt: Trump Wants to Deliver Prime Time Address on Government Shutdown...

Trump Wants to Deliver Prime Time Address on Government Shutdown and Will Visit the Border

President Trump wants to address the nation about the government shutdown on Tuesday night, and later in the week plans to travel to the southern border as part of his effort to persuade Americans of the need for a border wall — the sticking point in negotiations with Democrats who are eager to reopen shuttered agencies.

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about a request to television networks to carve out time for an Oval Office address. A person familiar with the request said the White House had asked to interrupt prime time programming on Tuesday.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, announced Mr. Trump’s plans to travel to the border on Thursday, which would be the 20th day of the partial government shutdown if an agreement between Congress and the White House is not reached in the meantime.

Has anyone seen sun dogs before?

I saw my first yesterday! I took pictures, but they really don't do them justice. Initially, I thought one of the sun dogs was actually the sun partially hidden by clouds, but was puzzled by the rainbow effect. I looked around and realized that some cool atmospheric phenomenon was going on.

Here are some pics people posted on Twitter:

A sun dog (or sundog) or mock sun, formally called a parhelion[1] (plural parhelia) in meteorology, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to one or both sides of the Sun. Two sun dogs often flank the Sun within a 22° halo.

The sun dog is a member of the family of halos, caused by the refraction of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere. Sun dogs typically appear as a pair of subtly colored patches of light, around 22° to the left and right of the Sun, and at the same altitude above the horizon as the Sun. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but are not always obvious or bright. Sun dogs are best seen and most conspicuous when the Sun is near the horizon.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg misses Supreme Court arguments for first time as she recovers from cance

Source: WaPo

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will not be on the bench Monday when the Supreme Court hears oral arguments, the first time in her career she has missed a session.

Ginsburg, who joined the court in 1993, will participate in the scheduled cases by reading briefs and a transcript of the two oral arguments scheduled for Monday, court spokeswoman Kathleen Arberg said..

Ginsburg, 85, had surgery Dec. 21 for two malignant nodules in her left lung, the 85-year-old justice’s third bout with cancer.

The pulmonary lobectomy was performed at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She was released several days later, and has been working at home, according to Arberg
