Group of State Department Officials Call for Consultations on Trump's Removal

Source: Foreign Policy

Career officials at the State Department filed a second unprecedented dissent cable condemning President Donald Trump for inciting the violent mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and urging top administration officials to consider invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.

The dissent cable is the second such cable sent to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo this week, reflecting widespread shock and anger in the diplomatic corps at Trump’s actions and Pompeo’s own response to the political crisis. The protest against the sitting U.S. president by American diplomats is largely unparalleled in the department’s nearly 232-year-long history.

The cable rebuked Pompeo for his “failure to issue a statement unequivocally acknowledging that President-Elect Biden won the 2020 election” and protested the “President’s incitement of insurrectionist violence against the United States.” Foreign Policy could not independently corroborate the number of officials who signed the cable, but one of the officials who signed it, speaking on condition of anonymity, said around 175 State Department officials, primarily lawyers, had signed on.

The second cable goes further than the first cable in laying out extensive arguments for how the president’s actions undermined U.S. foreign policy and democratic institutions. It also explicitly called on Pompeo to support consultations with other cabinet officials on possibly invoking the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office.

Trump considering Giuliani and Dershowitz for impeachment defense team

Source: CNN

(CNN)Staring down the barrel of a second impeachment, President Donald Trump is beginning to mull who would represent him in a Senate trial.

He's expected to be represented by his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, in the event of an impeachment trial, two sources familiar with the matter said, and is also considering hiring controversial attorney Alan Dershowitz for his impeachment defense team.

Dershowitz declined to comment to CNN, saying, "I don't talk to CNN, I sue them." But he told Politico on Friday that it would be his "honor and privilege" to defend the President.

A Giuliani spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

You have to be fucking kidding me: Kyle Rittenhouse drinking at a bar with his mom

Kyle Rittenhouse is not only out on bail, but is hanging out with his mom drinking in Racine, WI. The "free as fuck" shirt is a nice touch to the fuck you that is our judicial system. This country may just be broken beyond repair.

Rep. Ted Lieu: It's important to show future generations that Congress didn't just ignore...

It’s important to show future generations that Congress didn’t just ignore what happened on January 6 and that we put on record our efforts to try to remove a president that instigated an attempted coup.

https://twitter.com/RepTedLieu/status/1347976673673830402

Veteran Torrance Rep. Ted Lieu and Long Beach Rep. Alan Lowenthal have almost a combined half century of experience at the local, state and federal levels as elected officials.

But neither was prepared for the experience of a violent, angry mob urged on by President Donald Trump invading the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, Jan. 6, as lawmakers prepared to ratify the results of the Electoral College that would formally make Joe Biden the nation’s next president.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” said Lieu, a former Torrance City Council member, who also tweeted that it was “despicable and shameful moment in American history.” “I never thought that would happen in America.

“It was an insurrection,” he added in a Thursday phone interview. “They were trying to stop us from certifying Electoral College results knowing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won. This was an attempted coup.”
