The Silence Breakers are TIME's 2017 Person of the Year

Source: Today

TIME has named The Silence Breakers, the individuals who set off a national reckoning over the prevalence of sexual harassment, as its 2017 Person of the Year.

The magazine's editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal revealed the selection Wednesday on TODAY along with the cover, a composite group photo that includes actress Ashley Judd, singer Taylor Swift and former Uber engineer Susan Fowler.

"The galvanizing actions of the women on our coveralong with those of hundreds of others, and of many men as well, have unleashed one of the highest-velocity shifts in our culture since the 1960s," Felsenthal said in a statement.

The Silence Breakers emerged amid burgeoning allegations of sexual misconduct and assault by film executive Harvey Weinstein. As his list of accusers swelled, so did the number of people who spoke up to expose dozens of other famous individuals in Hollywood, politics, journalism and other industries as sexual predators.

Source: USA Today

NEW YORK — Once again, Colin Kaepernick was the story of the night. But this time, he had a little help from a friend.

Beyonce made a surprise appearance to honor Kaepernick with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award during the 2017 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards.

Introduced by Daily Show host Trevor Noah as "a friend who admired Colin Kaepernick so much she asked me to sneak her in," the artist praised the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback for his courage to open what she called an important conversation about race in America.

"Thank you, Colin Kaepernick," the 22-time Grammy winner said. "Thank you for your selfless heart. And your conviction. Thank you for your personal sacrifice. Colin took action with no fear of consequences or repercussions, only hope to change the world for the better."

Police video shows Oklahoma lawmaker getting busted in motel room with underage boy

Source: The Kansas City Star

Police have released body-camera footage of the night they found former Oklahoma state Sen. Ralph Shortey in a motel room with an underage boy.

Shortey, who was accused of engaging in child prostitution and pornography, pleaded guilty last week to a federal charge of child sex trafficking.

The former two-term Republican senator entered his plea Thursday before U.S. District Judge Timothy DeGiusti in exchange for federal prosecutors dropping three child pornography charges against him.

In the video, Shortey is wearing a T-shirt with a picture of a sandwich, a Bible verse and the words “Now go make me a sandwich.”

Trump pick for top UN position praised Milo Yiannopoulos, shared inflammatory memes on Facebook

Source: CNN

(CNN)President Donald Trump's pick for a top post at the United Nations repeatedly praised far-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos and shared disparaging memes about prominent Democrats and progressives on social media.

Patrick Murray, a former Army officer and two-time congressional candidate, was nominated by Trump in May to be the alternate representative for special political affairs to the United Nations. Murray's nomination was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in August and he awaits full Senate confirmation.

If confirmed, Murray would serve under Ambassador Nikki Haley in representing US interests at the United Nations and would act as a fill-in for Haley in representing the US to the United Nations General Assembly when she is unavailable.

Murray has used his publicly visible Facebook account, which was linked on his now-defunct personal website, over the years to promote media appearances and share his thoughts on politics.

We think there are many, many more: Florida cult leader charged with murder of toddler

Source: The Washington Post

The property was off an isolated road running through north Florida swampland, hidden behind thick walls of trees dripping with moss.

The House of Prayer for All People opened in 1983 in Micanopy, a town just south of Gainesville. For nearly 10 years, children arrived at the religious boarding school and into the care of “Mother Anna” — Anna Elizabeth Young. There, according to Alachua County authorities, they were tortured and abused in a religious cult atmosphere that included exorcism and chemical baths.

Decades later, police are only now beginning to understand what may have happened at the site.

“Witnesses came forward from the House of Prayer alleging brutality and even some children being murdered,” Art Forgey, a spokesman with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office told ABC 20 last week. “It’s not just one isolated incident of beatings. There were numerous children that were beaten, locked in solitary confinement, food-withheld.”

Late last week, Young, 75, was arrested for the premeditated first-degree murder of a child, law enforcement announced in a news release. The Gainesville Sun reported the charges stem from the death of Emon Harper in the late-1980s. Authorities say the boy was either two or three at the time of his death, but few other details have been released.

White House paranoid: 'Everyone thinks they're being recorded'

Source: Politico

Paranoia is enveloping the White House and President Donald Trump’s network of former aides and associates as Robert Mueller’s Russia probe heats up.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn agreed to cooperate with investigators as part of the plea deal he reached last week, adding to the worry already inside Trump’s circle surrounding the secret deal struck earlier this summer by former campaign aide George Papadopoulos, whose cooperation was kept quiet for months before being unsealed in late October.

Both cases raise the possibility that other current or former colleagues have also flipped sides — and they're prompting anxiety that those people could be wearing wires to secretly tape record conversations.

“Everyone is paranoid,” said a person close to Trump’s White House. “Everyone thinks they’re being recorded.”

Philadelphia write-in candidate: I won with one vote

Source: The Hill

A Philadelphia resident was shocked to receive a letter Friday with the information they won an election earlier in the month — apparently despite no one else casting a vote.

"I literally yelled 'what the hell' when I opened the letter," Phillip Garcia told The Hill. "I've written my name in a few times during elections when no one else is listed for a position. It's just been a thing I do, with no expectation of, like, actually making an impact on the vote."

Garcia, editor-at-large of The Rumpus and a Temple University Ph.D. candidate, tweeted Friday that the city had informed them of election as an election judge to serve on a board for Ward 21, Division 10 of the city, which covers parts of the Manayunk neighborhood.
