Merriam-Webster throwing SHADE: The word 'doctor' comes from the Latin word for "teacher."

https://twitter.com/MerriamWebster/status/1337841415116763138

Origin of "Doctor"

The English language history of doctor starts in the early 14th century, when the word was first applied to a select few who likely knew neither bloodwork nor basketwork. They were equipped for dealing with matters of the soul: they were eminent theologians who had a special seal of approval from the Roman Catholic Church as people able to talk about and explain the doctrines of the Church. They were teachers of a kind, and the word's origin makes this connection. The word doctor comes from the Latin word for "teacher," itself from docēre, meaning "to teach."

The 14th century was the birth of the Renaissance, and lots of teaching and learning was afoot. By the century's end, the word doctor was being applied not just to a select few theologians, but also to qualified and/or accomplished academics and medical practitioners.

In the centuries between then and now, doctor has had many other applications, including referencing a soldering tool, a tropical sea breeze, and a loaded die. It's almost exclusively used of people now, and both qualified academics and medical practitioners may rightfully claim it.

The Ms. Q&A: Ziauddin Yousafzai's Giving Girls Around the World Every Opportunity a Boy Would Have

“I was encouraging Malala not just to be an educated girl, but to be a girl who is a girl known by her own name.“

Ziauddin Yousafzai is known around the world for being the father of Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. He’s a Pakistani educator and has been advocating for girls education for decades. After Malala survived a Taliban attack for her own activism, Ziauddin joined her in creating the Malala Fund for girls education. He also serves as a United Nations special advisor on global education.

Melanne Verveer: [Malala] is just a remarkable young woman. She often talks about the fact that you were determined to give her every opportunity that a boy would have in your society.

How did you proceed? Did you get questioned by other men in the community where you were living in Pakistan?

Yousafzai: Ah, yes. In the beginning when I was encouraging Malala and not just to be an educated girl, but to be a girl who is a girl known by her own name.

I had five sisters and none of my five sisters had an opportunity to receive education. And at that time, we hardly had any school for girls. But also, my parents did not have any big dream for my sisters. They had very tall dreams for me because I was a boy and for my five sisters, their only dream was to get them married as early as possible. Coming from that patriarchal society, being in that patriarchal family, our people could see the change in my behavior.

I often tell the story—when Malala was born and she was hardly [a] few weeks after her birth—my cousin brought a family tree. And when I looked at the family tree, it was a long list for 400 years and they were all men. I picked up my pen and drew a line from my name, and wrote Malala. I could see the disapproval on his face that he was thinking of me, that I was a crazy man putting a girl name on a family tree.

So these were the things in the beginning that people did not like in me. But once they saw the impact of a girl and or activism, I think, later on [the] same people joined us.

DC man who sheltered protesters honored in Time's 'Heroes of 2020'

A Washington, D.C., man who gained notoriety over the summer for sheltering 70 protesters in his home after they were trapped and pepper-sprayed by police along his street has been featured in Time magazine’s “Heroes of 2020.”

Time, who labeled Rahul Dubey as “The Man Who Gave Shelter to Those in Need,” detailed the events that led Dubey to usher people into his home on the evening of June 1.

Dubey told Time that following a 7 p.m. curfew implemented in the city in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests, he noticed crowds forming on his street. He said he saw police setting up barricades to trap protesters, and then pepper-spraying the demonstrators.

“I open my door, and I start yelling, ‘Get in!’” Dubey, who works in health care, said. “All these people were swarming in.”

Adam Kinzinger (R-IL): Real men accept a loss with grace.

I want to be clear: the Supreme Court is not the deep state. The case had no merit and was dispatched 9-0. There was no win here. Complaining and bellyaching is not a manly trait, it’s actually sad. Real men accept a loss with grace.
