WATCH: Las Cafeteras Dreams of Liberation in 'If I Was President'

The Los Angeles folk-fusion band's new bilingual song envisions a presidency that fights racist policy and empowers communities of color.

Chicanx genre-bending band Las Cafeteras invites listeners to visualize an equitable future of their own creation in the video for "If I Was President," which premiered yesterday (April 26) via Democracy Now!

The song from the group's 2017 album, "Tastes Like L.A.," jumps between Spanish singing and English rapping as members Denise Carlos, Hector Flores, Leah Gallegos and Daniel French each reflect on the oppression they would change if they became president. Here are a few of the lyrics, with translations added to the Spanish-language passages:

Funeral directors book Trump hotel along with Trump ally Newt Gingrich for PAC fundraiser

Source: The Washington Post

Funeral directors from across the country have flocked to Washington for their annual advocacy summit — an event that includes a visit to Capitol Hill, a trip to Arlington Cemetery and lobbying on issues related to burials.

But this year’s gathering comes with a new, high-profile ticket: an evening at the Trump International Hotel alongside one of President Trump’s most steadfast allies, former House speaker Newt Gingrich.

...

The invitation, titled, “An Evening with Newt Gingrich,” promotes the Trump International Hotel as a place where “history meets luxury,” which has been restored beyond its “original grandeur.”

...

In booking the president’s luxury hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, just a few blocks away from the White House, the funeral directors have joined a growing list of special interest groups bringing their business to Trump properties. Ethical experts have said that the trend raises concerns about efforts to lobby the Trump administration commingled with potentially lucrative business transactions with Trump’s company.

New York Braces for Trumps First Return as President

Source: NYT

On May 4, Donald J. Trump is coming back to New York for the first time since moving into the White House.

The president will visit the U.S.S. Intrepid, the decommissioned aircraft carrier on the West Side of Manhattan, according to Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary. There he will meet with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of Australia to commemorate the 75th anniversary of a naval battle the countries fought alongside one another during World War II.

And the city, where protests against Trump policies have erupted in parks, airports, schools, churches, synagogues, mosques, museums, restaurants and streets, to name just a few locations, is girding for what, in the inflamed atmosphere, may be a battle of its own.

...

The New York Police Department has estimated that it will cost $308,000 a day to protect the president when he is in town. “We recognize that this will be the president’s first official visit to New York City since taking office,” Stephen P. Davis, the chief spokesman for the police, said in an email, “and the N.Y.P.D. will assign the resources necessary for the security of this event.”

...

It is unclear if Mr. Trump will stay at his penthouse triplex in Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, where his wife, Melania, and son Barron live. He may instead choose to stay at his country house in New Jersey, on the grounds of the Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster, about an hour’s drive from New York in the middle of horse country. The 1939 red brick Georgian Revival mansion has been referred to as Mr. Trump’s Camp David North. He met there with candidates for his cabinet during his time as president-elect.

I can't imagine he would stay at Trump Tower, he wants to be shielded from the commoners. It would make for a lot of , though! Oh, and, Trump's Camp David North.... never heard that one before. Sheesh!

From Mojave dunes to Pacific islands, the 19 national monuments being reconsidered under Trump

Source: Chicago Tribune

President Trump's latest executive order calls for Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to review monuments created by Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama. These monuments were set aside as public land under the 1906 Antiquities Act, which gives presidents the power to limit use of public land for historic, cultural, scientific or other reasons.

In advance of the ceremony, Zinke said the order would apply only to monuments that are at least 100,000 acres.

Here’s a look at the national monuments that will be reviewed.

Officials: Dad regrets daughter's Detroit visit for genital mutilation

Source: Freep

The father of a 7-year-old Minnesota girl who allegedly came to Michigan in February for a genital mutilation procedure knew about the trip, texted with his wife while she was in metro Detroit and now regrets letting his daughter come here in light of the explosive criminal charges, according to documents obtained by the Free Press.

&quot He) told the Child Protection investigator that if they knew what would come of it, this never would have happened," authorities wrote in a child protection services petition filed in Hennepin County, Minn.

The petition contradicts a widely held belief in the victim's family's Indian-Muslim community: that genital cutting is a closely guarded secret among only women, and that the men don't know about it.

&quot The father) knew about where they were because (his wife) texted him," states the petition, which offers fresh details in a case that has so far landed two doctors and a woman in jail on genital mutilation charges involving two Minnesota girls.

...

None of parents have been charged, though Minnesota authorities temporarily removed the girls from their homes. They are now back with their parents.

How Fox News Toxic Culture Is Finally Catching Up To It

Source: TPM

The claims have an eerie familiarity. An older, male Fox News higher-up would invite a young, female colleague to his office, make comments about her looks, and ask her out for drinks or to accompany him to a hotel. In some cases, he would forcibly kiss her, or explicitly ask for sexual favors. If she did not comply, her star at the network would be swiftly extinguished.

Fox lawyers have argued that these common threads prove the dozen-plus women who have accused former CEO Roger Ailes and recently ousted anchor Bill O’Reilly of sexual harassment are copycats out for money or attention. But more women just keep coming forward, and the company and its top executives have now also been accused of racial discrimination and illegally surveilling employees.

In public comments and multiple lawsuits filed against the company, former employees are alleging that actionable behavior was pervasive, involving more than the privileged leader (Ailes) and entitled star (O’Reilly). The old boys’ club environment cultivated on camera existed behind the scenes, too, the suits claim, and almost all of the high-level network executives who protected this behavior remain in their posts.

“Ailes was a powerful head and the people who enabled and were incredibly loyal and knew about his behavior are all still there; they’re leading the network,” Nancy Erika Smith, a lawyer representing former Fox contributor Julie Roginsky in her gender discrimination suit against Fox, Ailes, and the network’s co-president Bill Shine, told TPM. “So it shows that the culture really hasn’t changed.”

Sanders, Dems introduce $15 minimum wage bill

Source: The Hill

Democrats are uniting behind Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in a legislative push to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour.

Sanders will reintroduce a $15 minimum wage bill Wednesday, attracting support from some Democrats such as Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.), who previously supported a smaller minimum wage increase.

Reps. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and Bobby Scott (D-Va.) will drop a companion bill in the House. Ellison has previously pushed for $15 an hour, while Scott joined Murray in calling for a $12 minimum wage hike last Congress.

The $15 minimum wage bill stands little chance of passing in a Republican-controlled Congress, but could put pressure on GOP lawmakers to stand up for workers.

Ivanka Trump arrives in Berlin to work on special relationship

Source: CNN

Berlin (CNN)It could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship, after all.

In the wake of a mid-March White House visit characterized by awkward moments -- President Donald Trump apparently declined to shake German Chancellor Angela Merkel's hand in the Oval Office and he made an uncomfortable joke about wiretapping on live television -- his most trusted adviser, daughter Ivanka Trump, arrived in Germany Tuesday.

Ivanka Trump's Berlin trip features a jam-packed day, including panel appearances and dinner with Merkel. This is her first international trip since her father assumed office. (The President has yet to travel abroad himself.)

With this trip, Trump, who was invited directly by Merkel, is indicating the importance of US-German relations, perhaps solidifying the country's fledgling relationship with the Trump administration after a rocky start.
