Women Candidates Have Fun Hobbies Too, They Just Don't Get to Talk About Them

Did you know that Beto O'Rourke was in a punk band named Foss in the 90s and that Pete Buttigieg taught himself to speak Norwegian, basically for fun? Chances are, you might, because male candidates are routinely covered as both serious contenders and as multi-faceted human beings. Groundbreaking!

But what if—stay with me—I told you that the women candidates vying for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination also had fun hobbies and vast intellectual curiosity? And that these charismatic qualities are lurking just beyond all of the narratives about their nebulous "likability" and totally offensive efforts to remove Al Franken from Congress for groping a woman?

In the spirit of covering women candidates for the "rock stars" they, too, are: read on for 19 colorful character quirks and staggering academic achievements of Sens. Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand and Amy Klobuchar. Two of them even have dogs!

There's much ado about Beto's worship of legendary punk band Fugazi, but what of Warren's affinity for Dolly Parton? She launched her 2020 run to the sweet sounds of "9 to 5."

Harris also listens to music—shocking, I know. Her 45-track Black Music Month playlist, created for Huffington Post in June 2017, included A Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill, The Notorious B.I.G., Childish Gambino and Andra Day.

The media loves a politician who works out. Look no further than Gillibrand, who has run two marathons and plays on the congressional women's softball team.

Sen. Klobuchar enjoys hiking and is a barre-class devotee. (“It’s a reminder that we must all be humble," she told Vogue, "because I’m like the worst in the class.”) She has also accompanied her dad, Minnesota newspaper reporter, Jim Klobuchar, "on epic bike rides that helped her get to know Minnesota’s scenic beauty," according to one review of her book.

Plaque marking Trump's first 'border wall' section awaits his visit to Calexico

CALEXICO, Calif. — When President Donald Trump visits this border city Friday, he plans to tour a recently installed section of border fence. It's the first replacement project completed under his presidency, and a plaque welded to the bollards marked the occasion.

The plaque, installed more than six months ago when the work was completed, refers to the 2.25-mile-long barrier as the "the first section of President Trump's border wall."

Border officials in Calexico have noted that the project had been planned for years before Trump took office.

Trump says he's recommending Herman Cain to Fed

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump said Thursday that he's recommended Herman Cain, a former pizza executive who dropped his bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination amid sexual harassment allegations, for a seat on the Federal Reserve Board.

"I've recommended Herman Cain. A terrific man, a terrific person. He's a friend of mine," Trump told reporters. "I've recommended him highly for the Fed. I've told my folks that that's the man and he's doing some pre-checking now and I would imagine he'd be in great shape."

Since the start of his presidency, Trump has moved to reshape the world's most powerful central bank, appointing four people to the seven-member Fed Board so far.

That includes Chairman Jerome Powell, a former investment banker, who the President has repeatedly accused of trying to undercut him politically by raising interest rates, which Trump believes will slow down the economy.

Scoop: Trump expected to name Herman Cain to Federal Reserve board

President Trump has told confidants he wants Herman Cain on the Federal Reserve board, but will wait until his background check is completed before making the formal announcement, according to two senior administration officials familiar with the decision.

Why it matters: It's likely confirmation that Trump is ready to move ahead with the former presidential candidate, whose possible nomination was reported by Bloomberg in January. "He won't formally announce until the vet is completed ... But he likes Cain and wants to put him on there," said a senior official who has discussed the matter with the president.

Between the lines: As with any Trump "decision," administration officials are quick to attach an asterisk. This time, their hesitation is less about Trump changing his mind than about something coming up in Cain's background check that could complicate the situation.

The administration did not conduct a thorough vetting of Trump's most recent Fed pick, Stephen Moore, and they've had to weather stories about back taxes owed by Moore and that he had failed to pay alimony to his ex-wife. Moore told the New York Times earlier this week that "it's full speed ahead" and said that the White House was "100%" behind him.

Trump's fear-stoking immigration policy, in two White House retweets

Source: Vox

Instead of posting content aimed at lifting Americans up or even just highlighting events involving public officials, the Trump administration is now using the official White House Twitter account to sensationalize immigrant crime.

They’re doing so at a time when President Donald Trump is threatening to close the US-Mexico border — even as he acknowledges that doing so would be bad news for the American economy — and two days ahead of a trip to the border in which Trump is expected to celebrate the construction of new fencing.

Voters repudiated Trump’s fear-mongering about immigrants during last November’s midterm elections, but even with Democrats now controlling the House, Trump hasn’t given up on trying to convince Americans that undocumented immigration is a national emergency. During an Oval Office event on Tuesday, Trump urged Congress to pass legislation curtailing both legal and illegal immigration, going as far as saying “we have to get rid of judges” who preside over immigration hearings in order to allow for expedited deportations.

Then, on Wednesday, the White House retweeted crime stories from a CBS affiliate in Nashville about crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants.
