Trump set to benefit as Qatar buys $6.5m apartment in New York tower

Source: The Guardian

The government of Qatar bought a $6.5m apartment in one of Donald Trump’s New York towers soon after the dismissal of a lawsuit that tried to stop the president benefiting from such deals.

Qatar’s mission to the United Nations signed a deal for the condominium at Trump World Tower on 17 January, according to city records. The purchase means that the Middle Eastern state now owns four units in the building, for which it paid $16.5m.

On 21 December, a federal judge in New York had thrown out a lawsuit from ethics campaigners alleging that Trump was breaching the emoluments clause of the US constitution by collecting tens of thousands of dollars in charges from Qatar each year for the three apartments it already owned in the building.

Qatar’s new acquisition at Trump World Tower, which is in Manhattan’s Midtown East section, coincided with an intense lobbying campaign in Washington by the Qatari government amid a regional crisis that has pitted the Gulf monarchy against Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

BRB... I am going out to search for some 'extreme cut out' jeans.

Damn, they are not available in stores and are sold out online. I guess I will have to pocket my two bills. So disappointing, especially since they have a "relax fit."

Wife: Cosby convicted by 'mob justice, not real justice'

Source: AP

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bill Cosby’s wife is calling for a criminal investigation into the prosecutor behind his sexual assault conviction, saying the case was “mob justice, not real justice” and a “tragedy” that must be undone.

Camille Cosby commented on the case for the first time on Thursday in a statement issued through a spokesman a week after her husband of 54 years was convicted of aggravated indecent assault.

Camille Cosby called her husband’s chief accuser Andrea Constand a liar and compared the dozens of other women who’ve accused her husband to “lynch mobs” and his treatment to that of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy lynched in 1955 over false allegations he flirted with a white woman.

Prosecutors and Constand’s lawyers did not immediately respond to messages.

Georgia governor candidate aims gun at teen in campaign ad. 'Get over it,' he tells critics.

Source: The Washington Post

Political candidates have long appeared with guns in campaign ads — holding guns, firing guns, and even assembling guns blindfolded. Earlier this month, Georgia gubernatorial candidate Hunter Hill aired an ad showing him loading an assault rifle. The video title? “Liberals won’t like this.”

Now, a new ad in the race for Georgia governor — in which a candidate points a gun at a teenager — did not sit well with some Georgians. After all, it aired just one state away from the Florida high school where 17 people were killed in a mass shooting

In the campaign ad, Brian Kemp, Georgia’s secretary of state, sits in a room surrounded by firearms — handguns on a table to his right, rifles on the table in front of him, and what appear to be two AR-15-style guns leaning on the wall behind him. Across his lap he holds a double-barrel shotgun, cleaning it off as he speaks into the camera. Next to him sits a young man in khakis and a tucked-in flannel shirt.

“I’m Brian Kemp, this is Jake, a young man interested in one of my daughters,” he says, motioning to the teenager next to him. “Yes, sir,” Jake responds, looking nervous as he fidgets with his fingers.

House approved a fetal heartbeat abortion ban after adding some exceptions for rape, incest

Source: Des Moines Register

The Iowa House of Representatives approved a measure approved a measure Tuesday banning nearly all abortions in the state after brokering a deal designed to unite Republicans and clear the 51-vote majority needed to pass the bill.

Legislators approved Senate File 359 — which bans most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected — on a 51-46 vote late Tuesday night. The Senate approved the measure early Wednesday morning.

The legislation advanced out of the House Human Resources Committee in March, but for weeks it was unclear whether Republicans would muster enough votes to advance it off the floor.

To win approval, the House's most ardent anti-abortion members made concessions, including allowing exceptions to the ban for some victims of rape or incest.

Claire Foy to 'receive 200,000 in back pay' after The Crown gender pay gap controversy

Source: The Independent

The Crown star Claire Foy will reportedly receive back pay for her performance as Queen Elizabeth, after producers admitted she was paid less than co-star Matt Smith, who portrayed Prince Philip.

It is not known how much more Smith was paid for the first two seasons of the Netflix show, but according to the Daily Mail, Foy would get about $274,000 (£200,000) in back pay.

Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries, both producers on the show, first touched on the pay gap during the INTV Conference in Jerusalem earlier this year. The duo claimed that Smith earned more money because of his stint on the BBC series Doctor Who, which he starred on from 2010-2014.

While Mackie and Harries addressed the wage gap, they didn’t explain why Foy continued to make less money than Smith when her profile rose significantly ahead of the show’s second season, winning a Golden Globe and a Screen Actor’s Guild Award for her role on the show.
