McConnell rips Manchin's proposed "compromise" on voting:

McConnell rips Manchin’s proposed “compromise” on voting:

“Senate Democrats seem to have reached a so-called ‘compromise’ election takeover among themselves. In reality, the plan endorsed by Stacey Abrams is no compromise.”

At press conference, McConnell singles out Manchin proposals dealing with the FEC, redistricting.

“All Republicans will oppose that as well,” he says

McConnell now opposes both of Manchin’s ideas - passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and his “compromise” on S1

MacKenzie Scott Reveals Another $2.74 Billion in Giving

MacKenzie Scott, one of the richest women in the world, forged ahead with her highly unconventional approach to philanthropy on Tuesday, using a blog post to announce that she and her husband, Dan Jewett, had given away $2.74 billion to 286 organizations including arts nonprofits and groups working to combat racial discrimination.

Ms. Scott was married to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, for 25 years. When they divorced in 2019, her share of the settlement, 4 percent of Amazon’s stock, was valued at around $36 billion. Despite the huge sums she has given away since then — the latest round brings her total to more than $8 billion — her wealth has only continued to grow, thanks to Amazon’s soaring stock price. Forbes’s most recent estimate of her net worth was roughly $60 billion.

Though Ms. Scott did not list the amount she gave each organization, her blog post included a list of those receiving funds. They included well-known arts groups such as the Apollo Theater and Ballet Hispánico; higher education institutions including schools in the University of California and the University of Texas systems; organizations focused on racial justice, such as Race Forward and Borealis Philanthropy; and groups focused on empowering women and combating domestic violence.

When Ms. Scott promised in 2019 to give “until the safe was empty,” people had little reason to take her at her word. Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett — many of the world’s wealthiest — have made lofty promises of giving and each is richer now than ever before.

Democratic Rep. Val Demings announces challenge to GOP Sen. Marco Rubio

Source: NBC

WASHINGTON — Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., made her Senate bid official Wednesday, announcing that she plans to challenge GOP Sen. Marco Rubio for his seat next year.

Demings made the announcement in a three-minute-long video in which she shared her story serving in Orlando’s police department, where she worked her way up to serving as its first female chief of police.

“When you grow up in the South poor, Black and female, you have to have faith in progress and opportunity. My father was a janitor and my mother was a maid. She said, ‘Never tire of doing good, never tire,” Demings said in the clip.

“I’ve never tired of standing up for what I believe is right," she continued. "Now I’m running for the United States Senate because of two simple words: never tire.”
