UK, US and Canada allege Russian cyberattacks on CoVID-19 research centers

Source: CNN

(CNN)Russian cyber actors are targeting organizations involved in coronavirus vaccine development, according to a new warning by US, UK and Canadian security officials on Thursday that details activity by a Russian hacking group called APT29, which also goes by the name "the Dukes" or "Cozy Bear."

An advisory published by the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) details activity by the Russian hacking group and explicitly calls out efforts to target US, UK and Canadian vaccine research and development organizations.

Cozy Bear is one of two hacking groups linked to Russian intelligence that is believed to have accessed the Democratic National Committee's internal systems in the lead-up to the 2016 US election, but Thursday's announcement is the first time this group has been named in connection to cyberattacks related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The US, UK and Canadian authorities have issued several warnings about state-backed cyberattacks in recent month.

Michigan teachers not invited to legislative hearing on reopening schools

The state House and Senate Education committees met Wednesday to discuss reopening plans for schools this fall amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but an important perspective was left out of the conversation — teachers.

Conversations on safe reopening plans, and if in-person learning is a possibility at all this fall, are happening at federal, state and local levels. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, President Donald Trump and the Michigan legislative Republicans have all released their own plans. GOP plans stress the need for in-person learning, while Whitmer said school buildings shouldn’t open in geographic regions where COVID-19 caseloads are too high.

Invited to speak at the hearing were representatives from a national school choice group, a charter school management company, the Michigan Association of School Psychologists, Michigan Association of School Social Workers, Michigan School Counselors Association, the medical director for the Flint Community Schools Wellness Program and three superintendents from the Upper Peninsula.

“The one group of people that we have not heard from today are teachers,” state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Twp.), a former teacher, said near the end of the meeting. “As we talk about reopening, I hope that we are also centering the experience of the educators who we are expecting to do the work. Because by us saying that they have to open, we also need a workforce that is going to be there, be able to be safe, work with our students, make sure that they feel uplifted, that they are growing and learning at the same time and that our educators are empowered to do the work safely.”

Suspected bitcoin scammers take over Twitter accounts of Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos

Source: NBC

Suspected bitcoin scammers appeared to launch a wide-ranging attack on major Twitter accounts on Wednesday in an attempt to get people to transfer cryptocurrency, taking over accounts belonging to some of the world’s wealthiest corporations and people, including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

A tweet typical of the attack sent from the account of Bill Gates, the software mogul and the world’s second-wealthiest person, promised to double all payments sent to his bitcoin address for the next 30 minutes.

“Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time,” the tweet said. “You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000.”

Similar tweets appeared on the accounts of tech executive Elon Musk, rapper Kanye West and corporations including Apple, Uber and the money transfer app Cash.

The bitcoin address linked in the tweets was quickly inundated with more than 200 instances of people sending it money, totaling more than $100,000.
