24 Unvaccinated Students Banned From OC High School After Campus Measles Exposure

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Dozens of unvaccinated students have been banned from an Orange County high school after being exposed to measles by an infected classmate.

The 24 students cannot return to Huntington Beach High School until January 29, according to district officials.

“There’s been some kids absent from my class,” Jordian McCutch said.

The infected student was on campus from January 6 to 8.

IMF downgrades global growth forecast

The IMF now expects growth of 3.5% this year, compared with the previous estimate of 3.8% which it made in October.

The growth forecast for 2016 has also been cut, to 3.7%.

The downgrade to the forecasts comes despite one major boost for the global economy - the sharp fall in oil prices, which is positive for most countries.

The IMF expects that to be more than offset by negative factors, notably weaker investment.

That in turn reflects diminished expectations about the growth prospects for many developed and emerging economies over the next few years. If business expects weaker growth, there is less opportunity to sell goods and services and so less incentive to invest.

3 fires in San Francisco’s Castro may link to serial arsonist

rson investigators in San Francisco are looking into whether three early morning fires Monday in the Castro are related to a series of intentional blazes over the past few months in the neighborhood.

The first fire was reported just before 4 a.m. near 19th and Castro streets. Police and firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished flames that burned debris in the bed of a pickup truck and spread to the cab, destroying the vehicle.

Half an hour later and two blocks away, two fires were set across the street from each other near 18th and Hartford streets.

Fire crews squelched the more serious fire that burned the facade of a home, scorched the front door and caused an estimated $20,000 in damage, officials said. Across the street, firefighters quickly contained the other fire, which burned outside a home.

Chinese Growth at 7.4% Is the Slowest Since 1990

China’s stimulus efforts began kicking in late last year, boosting industrial production and retail sales, and helping full-year economic growth come close to the government’s target. The yuan and local stocks rose.

Gross domestic product rose 7.3 percent in the three months through December from a year earlier, compared with the median estimate of 7.2 percent in a Bloomberg News survey. GDP expanded 7.4 percent in 2014, the slowest pace since 1990 and in line with the government’s target of about 7.5 percent.

A soft landing for China would help a global economy contending with weakness that spurred the International Monetary Fund’s steepest cut to its world growth outlook in three years. China’s central bank cut interest rates for the first time in two years in November and has added liquidity in targeted steps to buoy demand.

“The economy’s performance in 2014 stands out against the widespread hard-landing fears that prevailed early last year,” said Tim Condon, head of Asia research at ING Groep NV in Singapore. “That the authorities were able to sustain close-to-target growth and increase the tempo of economic reforms –- shadow banking, local government finances -– and sustain the property-cooling measures demonstrates the effectiveness of the targeted measures.”

PA-Sen: Former Rep. Chris Carney Considers 2016 Senate Bid

There might just be a race after all.

Democratic 2010 Senate nominee, Joe Sestak, has been preparing for another challenge against Sen. Pat Toomey since 2013. But he may have to defeat former Rep. Chris Carney in a party primary before he’ll have a shot.

Carney is “weighing” a Senate campaign and will decide “fairly soon” whether he wants to pursue one.

“I have been encouraged by many folks who have approached me about running, and I’ve had many conversations with people from across the commonwealth,” Carney told National Journal, adding that he would think about “what’s best for my family and the people of Pennsylvania.”

Though Democratic operatives have been searching for an alternative to Sestak, Carney was not high on their list. The former Congressman was a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a caucus identifying as moderate and conservative that holds views unpopular with the liberal Democratic electorate, including opposing abortion rights.

REP. TAMMY DUCKWORTH SAYS SHE'S CONSIDERING 2016 SENATE BID

CHICAGO -- Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth says she's considering challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk in 2016.

Duckworth told The Chicago Tribune she's been talking with her husband and close advisers about a possible U.S. Senate bid. She says she still needs to have discussions with others, including the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Duckworth says: "I think it's pretty clear that people are looking for a change and I'm going to explore the possibility."

The 46-year-old from Hoffman Estates is an Iraq War veteran who just won her second term in office. She's on maternity leave until Feb. 16, after giving birth to her first child in November.

California Senate race a tangle of competing loyalties for Clintons

Villaraigosa might be the most obvious front-runner to win the Clintons’ endorsement, considering he was a national co-chair of Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign. At the time, the endorsement of one of the country’s most prominent Latino leaders was a coup for the then-senator. The Clintons, and the former president in particular, have famously long memories for such loyalty.

“For Bill especially, the question when it comes to endorsing always seems to be, where were you in 2008?” said one California insider.

But then Villaraigosa will have to compete with Steyer, who was one of Hillary Clinton’s earliest, most committed, and most generous supporters. After giving her the maximum contribution and raising more from friends, Steyer stuck with Clinton until the bitter end of her campaign, before shifting support to Barack Obama, and has remained close with the former secretary of state ever since.

Steyer’s non-profit is a partner in the Clinton Global Initiative. Steyer’s top political advisor, Chris Lehane, is a former Clinton aide. Steyer’s brother, Jim, taught Chelsea Clinton as a student at Stanford. Hillary Clinton visited Steyer at his home in July. And they sat next to each other at a League of Conservation Voters dinner in New York in September.

And Steyer has made himself a force in Democratic politics, spending more in the 2014 midterm elections than any other donor of either party.

Harris’ San Francisco-based strategists, meanwhile, worked on Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign and are likely be involved again in 2016.

ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA, WEIGHING SENATE RACE, HAS DINNER WITH ERIC GARCETTI

As he sizes up the race for U.S. Senate, former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa sought advice from his successor, Eric Garcetti, during a dinner last Thursday, according to two sources.

Villaraigosa has been consulting widely as he decides whether to jump into the race to succeed Sen. Barbara Boxer, who announced her retirement on Jan. 8.

Garcetti quickly took himself out of the running for the seat, and since then he has been hinting that Villaraigosa should run.

"I hope somebody from Los Angeles does run," Garcetti said on KABC-TV.

Kamala Harris’ camp hoping to keep Tom Steyer out of Senate race

Having jumped into the U.S. Senate race “feet first,” state Attorney General Kamala Harris will be hitting the phones to score as much money and as many endorsements possible — all in the hope of keeping rival Democrats from jumping in as well.

Topping the list of those she hopes to stop is former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa — but ultimately, she’s most worried about billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer.

It’s not that Harris’ managers think Villaraigosa could beat her in the primary. But if a big name like Villaraigosa or Rep. Loretta Sanchez of Santa Ana — who’s well known in Southern California — gets into the race, it could make it more inviting for Steyer to join the fray.

Steyer might not want to be the lone candidate trying to block the path to Washington of a charismatic woman of color. But if it’s already a crowded field, that’s a different story.

Fox Guest: There Are '19 Paramilitary Muslim Training Facilities' In The U.S.

Former CIA operative Wayne Simmons said there are "at least 19 paramilitary Muslim training facilities in the United States" during an appearance Friday on "Your World With Neil Cavuto."

Simmons appeared on the show and responded to host Neil Cavuto's accusation that President Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron refuse to use the labels "Islamic Jihad" and "Islamic extremist."

"Until they face that, until they say that, until they get rid of these go no-go zones," Simmons said. "You go in and you put razor wire around those no-go zones, you turn off the water and then as they come out you catalogue them. And that's how you close these no-go zones."

"It is incomprehensible that anywhere in the United States, these types of things would be allowed and, yet, my friend Ryan Mauro, as you probably know, reported that through the Clarion Project that we've got at least 19 paramilitary Muslim training facilities in the United States," Simmons continued. "Are you kidding me? What are, what are they gonna do, go hunt deer during deer season? No. They're using paramilitary exercises to plan and execute these types of operations all over the United States."
