Poll: Clinton on the rise in Iowa

Buoyed by voters' confidence in her experience and relatively strong support among women, Hillary Clinton's rise in Iowa continued on Friday with the release of a new Quinnipiac University poll of likely caucus goers that has her up double digits on Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Clinton took 51 percent, up 11 points from the September poll, while Sanders remained statistically unchanged, at 40 percent. He earned 41 percent in last month's survey. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley earned 4 percent, with no other candidate receiving more than 1 percent support and 4 percent undecided.

The gender gap persists in the most recent poll, with 59 percent of women going for Clinton compared to just 33 percent for Sanders, who is the choice of 51 percent of men. Just 39 percent of men said they would caucus for Clinton.

The post-debate poll is more good news for Clinton in Iowa, after the former secretary of state earned 48 percent to Sanders' 41 percent in a Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register survey conducted by Selzer & Co. that came out on Thursday.

Among those who watched the debate, 62 percent said Clinton did the best job, while 31 percent thought Sanders did. Just 3 percent said O'Malley won the event.

El Niño: Authorities warn public to prepare for heavy flooding across California

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Weather officials are predicting massive flooding throughout California over the next several months, and issued this warning to home owners: better get prepared because you’re running out of time.

In Friday morning’s conference call with media to address the impacts of the upcoming storm season, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that dangerous flash flooding will be on the rise, according to data from weather models.

“People should have food and water for at least 72-hours in their vehicles and home,” NOAA spokesperson said.

Much of the focus during the call with the NOAA and Federal Emergency Management Agency officials was centered on preparedness and the importance of insurance coverage. According to weather officials, 50-70% of people who should have flood insurance do not.

“Flood insurance policies usually have a 30-day waiting period to take effect…the time to get one is now,” officials said.

Quote of the Day: 'I’ve lost more sleep than all of you put together'

In another sympathetic exchange with a Democrat on the panel, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) asked Clinton how she felt about the notion that Republicans wanted to give the impression that she had deliberately interfered with security in Benghazi that resulted in the death of her friend in Stevens.

“It’s very personally painful accusation. It has been rejected and disproven by non-partisan, dispassionate investigators but nevertheless having it continued to be bandied around is deeply distressing to me. I would imagine I've thought more about what happened than all of you put together. I’ve lost more sleep than all of you put together," Clinton said. I have been wracking my brain about what more could have been done or should have been done, and so when I took responsibility, I took it as a challenge and an obligation to make sure before I left the State Department that what we could learn as I’m sure my predecessors did after Beirut and after Nairobi and Dar es Salaam and after all of the attacks on our facilities, I think all of them, Republican and Democrat alike ... said, 'OK, what must we do better?'"

Long-Shot Dem Lincoln Chafee To Address 'Future In The Campaign' Friday

t's been hard for former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee's presidential campaign to get a break. After mixed reviews in the first Democratic presidential debate and consistently polling in the low single digits, Chafee announced Thursday night he would address the "future in the campaign" the following morning.

Many read the announcement as an indication that the long-shot Democrat would suspend his campaign on Friday, and a spokesperson for Chafee told a reporter he "can't talk right now" when asked about the news.

A report from NPR this week found Chafee's campaign has only 10 major donors, and had raised just $8,300 in the race so far. The candidate also has no campaign office in Iowa or New Hampshire, two critical early voting states.

Duggar family’s homeschool program sued for sexually abusing minors

The Institute in Basic Life Principles, (IBLP) the homeschooling program used by the Duggar family, was accused of covering up sexual assault against underage girls in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday, the Washington Post reported.

The five plaintiffs, identified as Charis Barker, Rachel Frost, Rachel Lees, Gretchen Wilkinson and one Jane Doe, are each seeking $50,000 in damages, saying they were “at times minors” when they were subjected to the abuse and “inappropriate touching” during their association with the group.

While the institute is named as a defendant in the suit, founder and former director Bill Gothard, who was placed on “indefinite administrative leave” last year after being accused of sexually harassing and abusing employees, was not. Despite being cleared in an internal investigation by the group — which the lawsuit described as a “sham” — Gothard is not allowed to hold any sort of counseling or leadership role within the institute.

Despite not being named in the suit, Gothard is accused of abusive actions against the victims, who were as young as 13 or 14 years old when they took place. The womens’ attorney, David Gibbs III, said Gothard would offer counseling to them at the IBLP’s home office in Oak Brook, Illinois. He would them touch the victims inappropriately when they were alone, or in the back seat of the car if Gothard used a driver.

Gothard or other institute officials, Gibbs said, would “call the parents and share with them all the allegations of abuse that were shared in counseling, and then send the children back into those environments” if one of his victims rejected him.
