BIG New Hampshire news: the Senate just voted to abolish the death penalty by a veto-proof majority. The House did the same last month.

While Gov. Sununu is expected to veto, as he did last year, votes are now there to override it. Abolition is on its way in New Hampshire.

Report: 21-year-old man in custody after string of church fires in St. Landry Parish

OPELOUSAS - A series of fires that destroyed churches with predominantly African-American congregations has drawn the ire of the NAACP, and one person is now reportedly in custody in connection with the fires.

On Monday, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People released a statement condemning the fires in central Louisiana, as well as similar incidents in Tennessee.

“What is happening in Tennessee and Louisiana is domestic terrorism and we must not turn a blind eye to any incident where people are targeted because of the color of their skin or their faith. The spike in church burnings in Southern states is a reflection of the emboldened racial rhetoric and tension spreading across the country. But this is nothing new. For decades, African American churches have served as the epicenter of survival and a symbol of hope for many in the African-American community. As a consequence, these houses of faith have historically been the targets of violence. The NAACP stands vigilant to ensure that authorities conduct full investigations," the statement read.

According to fire investigators, arson is likely the cause of the blaze that destroyed the 140-year-old Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and two others in the St. Landry Parish area. The first burned March 26 in Port Barre, and another church burned in Opelousas earlier in the week.

KATC reports that 21-year-old Holden Matthews was taken into custody by law enforcement on Wednesday.

A first wave of women targets Republicans after Ga. 'heartbeat' vote

Georgia Democrats promised to launch new challenges against Republican lawmakers who voted for the “heartbeat” anti-abortion bill. And a first wave of those candidates announced those plans just days after the legislative session ended.

At a press conference Friday under the Gold Dome that veered from somber to celebratory, seven women Democrats announced challenges against seven Republican incumbents – of whom six are men. The announcements were organized by Georgia Win List, which backs pro-choice Democratic women. It wasn’t meant as an endorsement, said executive director Melita Easters, but “just the beginning” of a long candidate roll-out.

“There will be a strong slate of women candidates for 2020,” said Easters. “We will flip the House and hopefully the Senate. It’s time.

”Many of the women were already planning to run before the legislative session, but said the passage of House Bill 481, which outlaws most abortions as soon as a heartbeat is detected, helped cement their decision.

'Black Widow' To Begin Filming in June

While speaking at a recent press junket for Hellboy, David Harbour revealed that filming on the highly anticipated Black Widow standalone movie is expected to begin in June. Marvel has been tight-lipped regarding their post-Avengers: Endgame plans, but the long-awaited Black Widow solo movie is expected to be among the next in line.

While he couldn't get into specifics, Harbour praised the cast of the movie, which includes the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, with reports that Rachel Weisz is also in talks to star.

“I think it's slated to start in June,” he reveals. “I don't think they have it fully-boarded yet, but it's a great character. I'm really excited about it. The cast is fleshing out (with) Scarlett and Florence Pugh, I think they said. I know they were talking about Rachel Weisz. There's some really great actresses.”
