Five people were shot, one of whom was killed, early Monday in downtown Sacramento, police say — the second mass shooting in the city’s core in three months. Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester said the shooting took place outside the Mix nightclub at 16th and L streets as the club was closing down. “What we know now is very limited and we hope to share more as this investigation continues,” Lester said.

“Ultimately, we had five people who were shot as a nightclub was letting out in our area.

“Of the five, one is unfortunately deceased, and the other four are being treated at area hospitals,” she said.

Scotland leaving UK would 'create best possible future' for LGBTQ+ rights, say pro-independence MPs

Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced plans for a second Scottish independence referendum – and it could decide the future of LGBTQ+ rights in the country.

Sturgeon proposed to Scotland’s parliament, Holyrood, a date of 23 October, 2023 for the second vote on independence in a decade (dubbed indyref2).

While it is still unclear whether the referendum will even go ahead – it’ll be up to the Supreme Court to decide – pro-independence LGBTQ+ politicians and voters believe that an independent Scotland could be beneficial for the community.

Scotland remains divided on whether to leave or remain in the UK. Staying in the union has a narrow lead of 46 per cent to 44 per cent, according to a poll published Thursday (30 June) by market research company Savanta ComRes.

John Nicolson, the SNP’s shadow culture secretary and one of the UK’s most prominent gay MPs, says Scotland becoming its own independent country would liberate it from Westminster, whose track record on LGBTQ+ rights has been spotty at best recently.

Mass Shooting: Several Shot At Highland Park (IL) Parade, Witnesses Say

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Gunfire disrupted Highland Park's Fourth of July parade Monday morning, with reports of several people shot.

Shots were fired about 15 minutes after the parade began, sending crowds scattering, according to multiple reports. Witnesses said multiple people were shot and transported to are hospitals.

"Highland Park Police are responding to an incident in downtown Highland Park. Fourth Fest has been canceled," Mayor Nancy Rotering said in a social media post around 11 a.m. "People avoid downtown Highland Park. More information will be shared as it becomes available."

One witness counted more than 20 shots, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, and at least one person appeared to be covered by a sheet.

The villages of Deerfield and Glenview have also canceled their Fourth of July parades in response to the incident.
