L.A. District Attorney Gascon to reexamine Polanski child rape case.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón has agreed to unseal a transcript that has long been sought by Roman Polanski, as prosecutors are reconsidering the director’s 45-year-old rape case with “fresh eyes.”

Gascón announced Tuesday that the office had reversed its position and would no longer object to unsealing a transcript of a 2010 examination of Roger Gunson, the deputy district attorney who prosecuted Polanski for raping a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Polanski, now 88, pleaded guilty but fled to France before sentencing. He has lived abroad ever since. Numerous efforts by previous D.A.’s to extradite him have failed, as have Polanski’s efforts to resolve the case without first returning to the U.S.

The announcement indicated that Gascón, who was elected in 2020, is breaking with the approach of his predecessors. His office also indicated a willingness to take a new look at the case, which Polanski and his supporters have long claimed was tainted by prosecutorial and judicial misconduct.

“The suspicion has been around this case for 40 years,” Tiffiny Blacknell, a special adviser to Gascón, told Variety in an interview. “Many people are suspicious that something untoward occurred. We share that curiosity and that concern.”

NY-10: She's running for Congress, despite the anti-Asian attacks against her

On July Fourth, while much of the country was attending cookouts and celebrating with fireworks, Yuh-Line Niou was dealing with something far less pleasant: She took to Twitter to post about the harassment she said she’s faced as a Taiwanese American New York State assemblywoman.

“The attacks on me have been and are getting more and more dangerous to my life. I am a human being too. I hope when people write things they think about what can happen as a consequence,” she tweeted.

The tweet wasn’t necessarily new information to her followers; she has opened up before, both in interviews and on social media, about the death threats and sexual harassment she said she receives regularly online. Niou, 38, knows it comes with the territory, she said: “A lot of women of color who run for office get that.”

Still, “some of the things have gotten really extreme. When people send you pictures of their penises and their guns, it’s a very strange message,” she recently told The Washington Post.
A day after her July 4 post, Niou talked more about that type of harassment in a virtual discussion with comedian and actor Ronny Chieng. The event capped off a long day of campaigning for what she hopes is her next role — in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Man suspected of hate crime for allegedly threatening to kill U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal

A 48-year-old South Seattle man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of a hate crime for threatening to kill U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, according to King County prosecutors.

A judge on Monday ordered the man remain jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail but denied prosecutors’ request for an anti-harassment order protecting Jayapal, said Casey McNerthney, a prosecutors spokesperson.

Jayapal, 56, is a former state senator who became the first Indian American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016. A Democrat, Jayapal represents Washington’s 7th Congressional District, which includes most of Seattle. Jayapal was born in India and came to the U.S. at 16 to begin college at Georgetown University.

“Congresswoman Jayapal confirms that incidents occurred at her Seattle home on Saturday night when she was present. The Congresswoman and her family are safe and appreciate the many calls and good wishes she is receiving from constituents,” spokesperson Siham Zniber wrote in an emailed statement Monday evening. “She is very grateful for the swift and professional response from the Seattle Police Department, the U.S. Capitol Police, and the FBI investigators who are working together diligently on the investigation and ensuring that she and her family stay safe.”

Interesting comment on anxiety/depression meds from a mental health podcast host.

"At first, I expected the medication to make me a more proactive, productive person. Instead, I'm still a piece of shit. I just don't hate myself so much."

Shanghai identifies new COVID Omicron subvariant

SHANGHAI, July 10 (Reuters) - The city of Shanghai has discovered a COVID-19 case involving a new subvariant Omicron BA.5.2.1, an official told a briefing on Sunday, signalling the complications China faces to keep up with new mutations as it pursues its "zero-COVID" policy.

The case, found in the financial district of Pudong on July 8, was linked with a case from overseas, said Zhao Dandan, vice-director of the city's health commission.

Shanghai, in eastern China, emerged from a lockdown lasting around two months at the start of June, but it has continued to impose tough restrictions, locking down buildings and compounds as soon as new potential transmission chains emerge.

"Our city has recently continued to report more locally transmitted positive cases (of COVID-19) and the risk of the epidemic spreading through society remains very high," Zhao of the Shanghai health commission warned.
