Teen Mom Brain Dead After Being Shot in Back of Head by School Safety Officer

An 18-year-old mother has been left brain dead after a school safety officer shot her in the back of the head, her family says.

Mona Rodriguez, who has a 5-month-old son, was reportedly driving away after a fight with a 15-year-old girl, when the officer opened fire. Rodriguez was in the passenger seat; the 20-year-old father of her child, Rafeul Chowdhury, and his 16-year-old brother were also in the car at the time. Neither male was hurt.

The shooting, which occurred near Millikan High School in Long Beach on Monday afternoon — and not on school grounds — was captured by a witness on cellphone camera, and obtained by KTLA; it appears to show the officer approach the stopped car's passenger-side window.

The car suddenly turns right and speeds off past him, when at least two shots are fired at the departing vehicle.

"He has his gun!" the witness can be heard exclaiming. "No! Get down!" she screams as the shots ring out.

Scarlett Johansson, Disney Settle Explosive 'Black Widow' Lawsuit

Scarlett Johansson and Disney have settled a breach of contract lawsuit over the star’s Black Widow payday, a source tells The Hollywood Reporter. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The explosive suit, filed by the actress in July in Los Angeles Superior Court, claimed that the studio sacrificed the film’s box office potential in order to grow its fledgling Disney+ streaming service. Disney countered that Johansson was paid $20 million for the film.

The settlement brings to a close a back-and-forth PR battle that pitted the CAA-repped star vs. the studio for the past two months and was poised to have dramatic implications for Hollywood’s major studios. Johansson’s cause received support in the industry as talent and executives — including Jamie Lee Curtis, Marvel’s WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen and mogul Jason Blum — spoke out on her behalf.

At the time of the complaint, a Disney spokesperson said, in part, “The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.” CAA co-chairman Bryan Lourd shot back that Disney “shamelessly and falsely accused Ms. Johansson of being insensitive to the global COVID pandemic, in an attempt to make her appear to be someone they and I know she isn’t.”

In her complaint, Johansson said the Marvel tentpole had been guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release when she signed her deal. She alleged that her contract was breached when the film was simultaneously released on Disney+

Ford jolts auto industry with $11.4 billion investment in new electric vehicle, battery plants

The Ford Motor Co. gave the auto industry a jolt Monday with word that it plans to spend $11.4 billion on new production sites in Tennessee and Kentucky where it plans to build electric pickup trucks and cars — and the batteries to power them — on a massive scale.

It will also create 11,000 jobs in the two states that have struggled to recover from the collapse of the coal industry.

The audacity of Ford’s massive investment in electric vehicles was not lost on Ford Executive Chair Bill Ford.

“If my great-grandfather saw our industry five years ago, it would be very recognizable to him, it hadn’t changed a lot,” he said of the Ford founder, Henry Ford, in an interview with Tom Costello on "NBC Nightly News."

“There were a lot of evolutions, but no revolutions. Now we’re on the cusp of a revolution. It’s not just the electrification, although that’s a huge piece of it.”

It’s also a chance, Ford said in a statement, to “achieve goals once thought mutually exclusive — protect our planet, build great electric vehicles Americans will love, and contribute to our nation’s prosperity.”

Of those new jobs, 6,000 are destined for what’s being called the Blue Oval City campus in Stanton, Tennessee, a $5.6 billion megacampus where electric versions of the popular F-series pickup truck will be manufactured, along with electric batteries.

Woman who lived through Spanish flu dies of COVID at 105

A centenarian who survived the pandemic that was the 1918 Spanish influenza has died after contracting coronavirus.

Primetta Giacopini “was a fighter,” her daughter, 61-year-old Dorene Giacopini told The Associated Press Thursday of her mother’s incredible life, which ended on Sept. 16. She was 105.

Surviving the Spanish flu was just one aspect of Giacopini’s eventful century on Earth.

“I think my mother would have been around quite a bit longer” had she not gotten sick with COVID, said Dorene. “She had a hard life and her attitude always was ... basically, all Americans who were not around for World War II were basically spoiled brats.

Fan violence interrupted Marseille's Europa League draw with Galatasaray

Fan violence interrupted Marseille's Europa League draw with Galatasaray

Flares and objects were thrown by rival fans towards the end of the first half despite them being segregated.

The match was then halted to allow the police to restore order in the stadium.

Galatasaray boss Fatih Terim, and club captains Fernando Muslera and Dimitri Payet approached fans in an attempt to calm the situation.

The game resumed with about eight minutes remaining in the first period to the sound of firecrackers still going off in the stands.

An on-field clash between the home side's on-loan Arsenal defender William Saliba and Galatasaray forward Mbaye Diagne also saw objects thrown on to the pitch during stoppage time as both players were separated by team-mates before they received bookings.

It is not the first time this season that Marseille have been involved in an incident of this nature. Payet was hit by a bottle and threw it back into the crowd before fans stormed the pitch causing their Ligue 1 match at Nice to be abandoned.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed Appoints David Chiu to Replace Outgoing City Attorney

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/BCN) — To replace outgoing San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, Mayor London Breed announced Wednesday that she appointed Assemblymember David Chiu, D-San Francisco, to fill the position.

Herrera is set to leave the role to begin his new position as San Francisco Public Utilities Commission general manager on Nov. 1.

Chiu, a former San Francisco supervisor, has served on the state Assembly since 2014. In addition, Chiu, who has a law degree from Harvard University, formerly worked as a civil rights attorney and as a prosecutor for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

“I am so humbled and grateful for this appointment,” Chiu said during a news conference Wednesday in the city’s Mission District. “As city attorney, I’m going to fight to make sure we are protecting workers, standing up for consumers, and we are going to hold corporations accountable if they cross the line.”
