Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, first Mexican American congresswoman, retiring

Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, the first Mexican American woman elected to Congress who rose to serve on the powerful House Committee on Appropriations, has said she will not seek re-election.

Her announcement Monday resonated with Latinas throughout public office.

The California Democrat helped open doors in the halls of Congress to more Latinas and women of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.

“After thirty years in the House of Representatives, the time has come for me to spend more time with my family. Therefore I have decided not to seek re-election,” Roybal-Allard, 80, said in a tweet.

The first Hispanic elected to Congress, former U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., is of Cuban descent. Like Roybal-Allard, Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., first entered Congress in 1993. She is Puerto Rican.

QAnon Members Drinking Toxic Chemical Cocktails

The family of a QAnon member “who left her husband and children behind in Delaware to follow a fringe QAnon cult leader to Dallas last month, has been drinking a chemical cocktail containing chlorine dioxide, an industrial disinfectant, among other substances,” the Dallas Observer reports.

“It’s unclear why the group is drinking the chemical potion, as many believe the coronavirus, which has killed over 800,000 people in the U.S. and millions worldwide so far, is a government fabrication.”

San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin, others denounce Mayor Breed's call to increase policing

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco's top prosecutor on Monday pushed back on the mayor's call for increased policing to battle rampant drug dealing in one of the city's most vulnerable neighborhoods, urging her instead to put more money into housing and treatment that get at the root causes of crime.

The politically embattled District Attorney Chesa Boudin was joined by public defender Mano Raju and addiction specialists at a news conference announced after Mayor London Breed last week declared a state of emergency in the long-troubled Tenderloin. Open drug dealing and shootings in the neighborhood have made children and seniors afraid to go outside.

The news conference comes as Boudin, whose 2019 election was not supported by Breed, faces a recall election in June put on the ballot by detractors who say he is soft on criminals. Boudin's office has countered the criticism with examples of successful crackdowns on retail theft and other criminal operations. But his remarks Monday made clear his position on going after people who have substance use problems or mental health issues.

"If arrests and prosecutions alone could solve the drug crisis in this country or in this city, it would have been solved long ago," he said. "We've invested over a trillion dollars in fighting the so-called war on drugs, and where has it gotten us?"

Third graders forced to dig pretend mass graves in Holocaust reenactment -- then told 'Jews ruined Ch

The Washington Post revealed that a group of third-graders was forced to reenact moments from the Holocaust. The instructor then told the students not to tell anyone about it.

The incident happened at Watkins Elementary School, revealed the Washington Post. The instructor assigned various roles. One student, who is Jewish, was told to play Adolf Hitler, and others were forced to pretend that they were digging mass graves for murdered victims. At the end of the reenactment, the Jewish student was then told to pretend to kill themselves.

“I want to acknowledge the gravity of this poor instructional decision, as students should never be asked to act out or portray any atrocity, especially genocide, war, or murder,” said Principal MScott Berkowitz in an email.

The students were in a library class on Friday ahead of the winter break, working on a project. The instructor, however, had them forgo research time and participate in the "reenactment."

Another student was forced to be a Jew in a concentration camp told that they were going to die in the gas chamber. He also had to pretend that he was shooting his fellow students, a parent said.

The instructor also allegedly made antisemitic comments when students asked why Germans did this to people. "Because the Jews ruined Christmas," the instructor said.
