Rana Abdelhamid, a Justice Democrats-backed candidate, suspended her bid for for New Yorks 12th Congressional District, citing the states newly drawn House map.
Today, I am formally ending my bid for Congress after the courts undemocratic map removed me and my community from #NY12, Abdelhamid wrote in a statement.
Abdelhamid, a millennial Muslim activist, was challenging Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), the latest in a series of Democratic primaries by progressives seeking to oust moderates from their House seats.
After a messy redistricting process that concluded last week, the 12th District does not count Queens, where Abdelhamid resides, within its borders and now only represents Manhattan. At the same time, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) also announced he would run in the district.
A 10-year-old boy in Florida was arrested on Saturday for allegedly threatening in a text message to conduct a mass shooting, according to local police.
The Lee County Sheriffs Office said the fifth grader at a Cape Coral elementary school had sent a threatening text message, and authorities arrested him later that day. He was charged with making a written threat to conduct a mass shooting.
The investigation came just days after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 students and two teachers dead.
This students behavior is sickening, especially after the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno (R) said in a statement.
Local police have come under scrutiny for their response to the Uvalde shooting after it was revealed the gunman was in the building for more than an hour before Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents entered the classroom and killed him. Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw said on Friday that authorities made the wrong decision to wait to confront the gunman.
Arizona Republican Congresswoman Debbie Lesko, who represents the state's 8th Congressional District, was heckled and exited the stage during a commencement speech at a high school graduation ceremony on Friday.
The Arizona Virtual Academys ceremony was held in Glendale, close to Leskos district.
Graduate Juliana Butler was upset at Leskos speech.
I thought it was very inappropriate, and I was honestly really shocked that that was even allowed. I dont know who OK'd that, said Juliana Butler.
She says Lesko failed to mention the graduates and their accomplishments, and polled the audience on school choice and federal student loan forgiveness.
I have heard other commencement speakers make speeches, and they were just very motivating. Nothing to do with politics, or religion or anything. It was just about the graduates. And she seemed to not grasp that and not put that like in her speech at all, said Juliana Butler.
She says Lesko encouraged attendees to sign up for her personal newsletter and that Lesko brought voter registration forms to the event.
