Josh Shapiro's successor for attorney general is no stranger to the big stage

The most powerful woman in Pennsylvania, the state’s top law enforcement official, was facing judgment in a string of corruption charges that had rocked the state’s political and legal communities, shaken public faith in a pillar of society and captured attention around the country.

The case was filled with sordid tales of a politician — Kathleen Kane, the first Democrat ever elected attorney general — misusing her office to exact revenge on her political enemies. But there was another, more tragic side to the story.

In her effort to embarrass a former deputy, Kane had leaked to the press explosive documents of a long-dead investigation into Philadelphia civil rights leader Whyatt Mondesire — an investigation that ended with no charges filed. But the story thrust Mr. Mondesire onto front pages around the state, dragging his name through the mud and devastating him personally. He didn’t live to see Kane’s trial.

“I think he died a broken man over it,” said Kevin Steele, the Montgomery County District Attorney who was one of two prosecutors on the case.

George Santos said 9/11 'claimed my mother's life.' She died in 2016.

When George Santos mentioned his family during his congressional campaign, the New York Republican often reflected on the work ethic and strength of his mother, Fatima Devolder, and how she survived the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, where she was working that day.

But as the representative-elect has come under increasing pressure to explain himself after it was revealed that he lied about his business experience, education and family ancestry, Santos is now facing questions about what appear to be conflicting accounts of his mother’s death.

In two 2021 tweets from Santos that were first reported by journalist Yashar Ali late Wednesday, the Republican suggests that Devolder died at different times. In July 2021, Santos replied to a Twitter account titled, “9/11 was a victimless crime.”

“9/11 claimed my mothers life … so I’m blocking so I don’t ever have to read this again,” Santos wrote.

Russian Oligarch's Cousin Funneled Cash to Santos

The cousin and cash handler for one of Russia’s most notorious oligarchs poured tens of thousands of dollars into electing a newly minted congressman-elect who called Ukraine’s government “a totalitarian regime.”

Republican George Devolder-Santos vanquished Democrat Robert Zimmerman this month in the race for a House seat covering parts of Long Island and the New York City borough of Queens—riding a red wave that swept the Empire State this cycle, and washing away two decades of Democratic dominance in the district.

Devolder-Santos had long courted conservative media attention by presenting himself as a “walking, living, breathing contradiction”—a gay Latino millennial born in New York City, who is also a fervent devotee of ex-President Donald Trump.

For much of his professional career, which included a stint as regional director at an alleged Ponzi scheme, the Republican used the name George Devolder. However, as he ventured further into the world of politics, he began to increasingly use the name George Devolder-Santos or simply George Santos.

George Santos Suggests He Won't Run for Re-Election

Politico: “One Republican familiar with the discussions said Santos has told New York party leaders that he won’t seek reelection after this term. If he doesn’t make that statement openly soon, the Republican said, he risks those leaders publicly pulling support.”

George Santos Lied About His High School Too

New York Times: “On Wednesday, one more possible misrepresentation emerged. During his first campaign, Mr. Santos said on his website and on the campaign trail that he attended the Horace Mann School, an elite private school in Riverdale in the Bronx, but that his family’s financial difficulties caused him to drop out and get a high school equivalency diploma.”

“But a spokesman told The Washington Post that it could not locate records of Mr. Santos’s attendance, using several variations of his name.”
