Mexico's presidential candidates Sheinbaum, Glvez and lvarez Mynez spar over security in last debate

In the last debate before the June 2 presidential election, the three candidates vying for the Mexican presidency answered questions from moderators and traded barbs, as they sought to persuade the almost 100 million registered voters in the country.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the candidate for the ruling Morena Party; her main rival and opposition coalition candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez; and Citizen Movement candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez each opened their remarks at Mexico City’s Tlatelolco University with distinct messages for voters.

Álvarez Máynez promised to reinforce social programs, Gálvez declared herself a defender of “life, truth and freedom” and Sheinbaum, the front-runner, took the opportunity to bring up the Tlatelolco massacre of 1968, when the Mexican Army commanded “by a PRI president” killed hundreds of university students who were protesting police repression. The Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) is part of a coalition being represented by Gálvez in this election cycle.

Then came a shower of attacks and a landslide of promises. Gálvez said she would double scholarships so 1 million young people could attend university, while Máynez promised scholarships for everyone. Sheinbaum offered 1 million homes for young people and Gálvez offered 5 million residences. Sheinbaum also promised to create new megapharmacies and train thousands more medical specialists, while Gálvez announced a national health system in which all women with cancer could receive adequate treatment. Álvarez Máynez offered to equip police officers and guarantee a “living wage" and also promised to position Mexico as one of “the 10 economic powers in the world.” Sheinbaum assured that it would be in the Constitution that the minimum wage always increases above the rate of inflation.

A Sheriff's Conspiratorial 'Election Fraud' Investigation Is Dividing Kansas' Largest County

In November, Calvin Hayden spoke to a fringe gathering of “America First” conservatives at a church in Kansas City. He told the crowd at Hope Family Fellowship Church that they were in the middle of a war between good and evil, that the Apple logo reminded him of Eve eating forbidden fruit, and that “a lot of the LGBT stuff and questioning the gender” might really be a Communist Chinese plot to “demasculinize our men and our warriors.”

Others on the lineup that day included Father James Altman, who had called for Pope Francis’ death two months prior, and Michael Flynn, Donald Trump’s former national security adviser and pardon recipient, who the following month would tell Alex Jones, “We’re moving towards the sound of the guns here, folks, and the sound of the guns is freedom.”

Hayden was a bit of a luminary himself: He is the sheriff of Johnson County, Kansas, the most populous county in the state, including Olathe and many of the Kansas City suburbs. An elected Republican, Hayden is in charge of a department of nearly 500 deputies, two jails and a crime lab. And for years, he’s pursued a secretive, taxpayer-funded investigation of the 2020 election results in his county, which flipped Johnson County from Trump to Biden.

Hayden is tight-lipped with the media and defensive with other government officials about his probe, but he’s usually happy to tell right-wing audiences about his work, as he did in his November speech, revealing that his office was looking into a tech contractor that Hayden said he’d heard had worked to “flip” large counties’ votes across the country.

“I don’t know that we can win an election anymore!” he said, adding later that he could not say whether “our elections are safe.”

ID: Ballot issues, contested local and state races to appear on Tuesday's election ballot

Contested races in Bannock County include two county commissioner seats and the prosecutor. Additionally, Bannock County voters living within the boundaries of the Pocatello-Chubbuck School District 25 will notice a $33 million bond ask on their ballots to renovate the fire-ravaged Highland High School; however, in an unusual case the school district is telling voters it doesn’t need the money because the state provided funding.

There are also contested county and state legislative races in Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Caribou and Power counties.

Voters will also be asked to support supplemental levies in the American Falls, Snake River, Bear Lake, Grace and Soda Springs school districts.

Further, there are ballot issues for the South Bannock Library District, Pocatello Valley Fire Protection District and Moreland Cemetery District.

Some Baltimore City election results in limbo as director questions discrepancies

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Several Baltimore City Council elections remain undetermined, while the leader of the Board of Elections pushed back on an explanation regarding a discrepancy in results.

Candidates running in District 8, 11, and 12 races await results. Monday, Paris Gray and Bilal Ali, running District 8, were at the Board of Elections warehouse in West Baltimore. Incumbent Eric Costello has a slim lead over political newcomer Zac Blanchard in District 11. Jermaine Jones, currently leading incumbent Robert Stokes in District 12, was also in attendance as the canvass continued.

We’re just staying diligent and making sure we are staying involved in the process,” he said.

Jones said he wants to know how a mistake could have been made in the first place in reporting Election Day results, even though the results were corrected. Given the low turnout and participation in elections, Jones said it’s critical to understand how the process works to ensure rules are followed properly.

Special election on Tuesday to fill suspended Orlando commissioner Regina Hill's vacated seat

ORLANDO, Fla. - Voters in Orlando's District 5 will vote in a special election on Tuesday to fill the seat formerly held by suspended Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill.

Hill is currently accused of defrauding a 96-year-old woman out of $100,000 and faces seven criminal charges.

A total of seven candidates are running for her seat. Early voting ended on Sunday.

The person elected to fill Hill's seat will serve District 5 until either the criminal case against Hill is resolved or the current term ends.

Voters to decide whether prosecutor and judge in Georgia Trump election case keep their jobs

ATLANTA -- Voters will decide whether two key players in the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump will keep their jobs.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee are both on the ballot for Tuesday's election. Willis is the prosecutor who last year obtained a sprawling racketeering indictment against Trump and 18 others, and McAfee is the judge who was randomly assigned to preside over the case.

Willis has a single challenger in the Democratic primary and, if she wins, will face off against a Republican candidate in the fall. McAfee has one opponent — after a second was disqualified — in a nonpartisan contest that will be the final word on whether he gets to keep his seat.

The intense public interest in the election case has thrust both Willis and McAfee into the national spotlight, giving them greater name recognition than occupants of their offices might otherwise have. That, along with the advantages of incumbency and fundraising hauls that have far surpassed their challengers, could give each of them an edge on Tuesday.

Indian government agency spent millions promoting BJP election slogans

Mumbai, India — In November, as India’s election campaign was beginning to take shape, a catchphrase coined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) started gaining traction.

“Modi ki guarantee” (Modi’s guarantee) was positioned by the governing party as the personal promise of the vastly popular prime minister to Indian voters, as the BJP tried to draw a contrast with the seemingly hodgepodge coalition of opposition parties railing against it. The BJP launched advertisements on Google with that tagline in the third week of November.

But around the same time, another organisation started pumping in millions of rupees into an almost identical-sounding campaign: “Modi sarkar ki guarantee” (Modi government’s guarantee). The videos in that campaign, which would continue for months, often referred simply to “Modi’s guarantee”.

In one such advertisement, aired on February 23, an actor portraying a young entrepreneur reassures a father apprehensive about his son’s career choice by telling him, “Papa, there is Modi’s guarantee. Modi ji has promised that he will make India one of the places with the most unicorn startups.” Towards the end, he confidently asserts that “thanks to Modi’s guarantee, every startup will start in India”.

ME: Wading into Democratic primary, Planned Parenthood backs St. Rep. Bruce White's challenger

One of the last Democrats in the Maine Legislature to regularly take votes against pro-abortion bills is facing a challenger backed by a major reproductive health advocacy group, with the upcoming primary centering on the schism between the two candidates on that issue.

Democratic Rep. Bruce White has served in the Maine Legislature since 2018, winning handily each time in his blue-leaning Waterville district. But now he is facing a challenge in House District 65 from Cassie Julia, a local community advocate who serves on the Waterville Planning Board. The primary between the two Democrats will take place June 11.

The issue of abortion and reproductive health policy has dominated the contest, as Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund PAC announced in April that it was endorsing Julia against the incumbent White — a notable move for a group that typically doesn’t wade into Democratic primaries.

In its endorsement of Julia, the group cited White’s votes against bills to protect abortion and said at a moment when reproductive health access is under attack around the country, it is imperative that lawmakers in Maine stand up for such rights.

PHILADELPHIA CITY COUNCIL PAVES WAY FOR BALLOT QUESTION TO INVEST DEVELOPER FUNDS IN HOUSING TRUST

In a push to funnel developer dollars back into Philadelphia neighborhoods, the City Council's Law & Government Committee has given the green light to a pivotal ballot question that could beef up the Housing Trust Fund, as reported by phlcouncil.com. Bill No. 240061 in tandem with Resolution No. 240068 is now set for a potential City Council thumbs up come May 30th, paving the way for a 2025 ballot box appearance.

The charter amendment proposition, advocated by Councilmember Jamie Gauthier, insists that cash from "payments in lieu" of developers providing affordable housing, needs to reinforce the Housing Trust Fund, which helps neighborhoods get the affordable housing they deserve and Philadelphia as a whole, Jamie Gauthier stated "I want to thank City Council’s Law & Government Committee for sending my proposed ballot measure to the City Council floor with a favorable recommendation," describing the move as a dual victory for both governance and the community.

The existing setup allows developers to amp up their buildings beyond the base zoning limits in exchange for contributing environmentally friendly or community-supporting perks, known as "density bonuses." There's a twist in the tale for those who instead opt to pay a fee, a payment that should ideally swell the coffers of the Housing Trust Fund, the city's lifeline for affordable dwellings.

Yet, these funds have yet to translate into a boost for the Fund, leaving local areas shortchanged and the larger housing initiatives starved for resources.
