Creamy Chicken Soup recipe

So, this week we're doing another warm and hearty recipe on our channel, because it's been freakin' cold. We had some leftover roast chicken, so hubby decided it was a good time to make some nice warm soup again! This time a rich and creamy soup with mushrooms. As always, this is sort of a template of a recipe, and there is a lot of room for customization and personalization. You can change the herbs and veggies, you can leave out the mushrooms if you're not a fan, you can strain it if you want a silky smooth soup instead of one with a bit of texture left, whatever you like! It's a very simple recipe.

The soup is thickened with a roux, but we sort of cheat it a little. Normally, we'd cook the roux in a separate pan and add it to the soup, but in this recipe, we heat up the veggies in butter, and then add the flour on top of that. The flour and butter cook together, and then when the stock is added, the cheater roux starts to cook in earnest and thicken the soup. You can see in the video when we lift the lid and the soup has become frothy after adding the stock, that's the flour of the roux cooking.

Also, maybe some of you have heard that YouTube is changing how their partnership works. It used to be that we could monetize our videos once we had 10,000 views on our channel (across all of our videos), but they're now changing it so that they require 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of views in the past 12 months. So, obviously we're only about 1/3 of the way to that first one, and the second one will take some time as well. This is affecting a lot of smaller and medium-sized content creators on the platform, and you'll probably see a lot of appeals like this: Please share our videos with people you know who may be interested in our content. Folks who'd like some simple recipes to expand their recipe box, or even just to see another way of cooking a few things! Thanks, everyone!

New Jersey bans Bump Stocks

N.J. bans gun device used in Las Vegas shooting after Christie signs bill

http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2018/01/nj_bans_gun_device_used_in_las_vegas_shooting_afte.html

It's now illegal in New Jersey to sell or posses a "bump stock," the controversial firearm accessory allegedly used by the gunman in last year's Las Vegas massacre.

Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican set to leave office Tuesday, signed a Democratic-sponsored bill Monday outlawing the devices, which can be affixed to semiautomatic riffles to allow them to fire bullets, mimicking automatic weapons.

Christie -- who took action on more than 150 bills on his final full day in office -- made no statement on the legislation (S3477/A5200), which takes effect immediately.

Anyone who owns a bump stock or "trigger crank" now has 90 days -- until April 15 -- to surrender the accessories to law enforcement authorities. Retailers who sell them have 30 days.

Sale or possession of a bump stock is now a third-degree crime that carries a sentence of three-to-five years in prison, a fine of up to $15,000, or both.

Good for NJ!

Trump's racism and misogyny on one neat little package:

https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/951899094657699841

At this point, anyone who's claiming ignorance of Trump's cartoonish racism and misogyny, they are just straight up lying. We called it out during the campaign, during the primary, during the election cycle, and ever since, and there are STILL people denying that the President is a racist or a white nationalist.

Forget the F-52s, forget Normay, forget Trump's malaprops and flubs

Everyone misspeaks, and Trump more frequently than most, but this has to be the story:

https://www.democraticunderground.com/1017474678
https://thinkprogress.org/walmart-bonus-layoffs-ed187882b011/
(with thanks to EarlG)

The intentional, brutish, cold, and sociopathic economic violence perpetrated by Trump and the corrupt administration that props him up in coordination with unbelievably wealthy and unethical corporations on the middle and lower classes, working poor, and wage slaves in the USA.

It's fun and funny to focus on Trump selling Norway a bunch of fictional aircraft, but as long as we're making fun of typos, the people being screwed by Trump's policies but still supporting him will be able to hold their ground and say that "the left" is just focused on calling Trump stupid. But point out that the corporations that were supposed to create jobs with all of those tax savings they got *IMMEDIATELY* and *WITHOUT WARNING* cut thousands of jobs, and it starts to trickle into their heads that maybe something's wrong, and maybe this isn't all as rosy at the hoarse-throated huckster in the Oval Office keeps promising.

I Made the Pizza Cinnamon Rolls from Mario Batalis Sexual Misconduct Apology Letter

*** Please note, this is not my writing ***

Found here:
http://www.everywhereist.com/i-made-the-pizza-cinnamon-rolls-from-mario-batalis-sexual-misconduct-apology-letter/

Last night, I made cinnamon rolls. I’m not a huge fan of cinnamon rolls, per se, but this recipe was included in Mario Batali’s sexual misconduct apology letter, and so I feel compelled to make them. Batali is not the first powerful man to request forgiveness for “inappropriate actions” towards his coworkers and employees. He is not the most high profile, and he is ostensibly not even the worst offender. But he is the only one who included a recipe.

And of course, the glaring question is why? Was his PR team drunk? Is life suddenly a really long, depressing SNL sketch? Do these cinnamon rolls somehow destroy the patriarchy? Does the icing advocate for equal pay?

I figure the only way to answer these questions is to make the damn rolls.

I find myself fluctuating between apathy and anger as I try to follow Batali’s recipe, which is sparse on details. The base of the rolls is pizza dough – Batali notes that you can either buy it, or use his recipe to make your own.

I make my own, because I’m a woman, and for us there are no fucking shortcuts. We spend 25 years working our asses off to be the most qualified Presidential candidate in U.S. history and we get beaten out by a sexual deviant who likely needs to call the front desk for help when he’s trying to order pornos in his hotel room.

Donald Trump is President, so I’m making the goddamn dough by scratch.

I think about the time that I was an intern at a local news station, and assigned to hand out cake while celebrating some milestone (it had to do with the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.) One of the producers I’d been working with closely walked up to the table.

“Do you want a piece?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he said, looking me up and down. “Oh, you mean of cake? No thanks.” He and another male staff member laughed while I stood, holding a piece of cake in each hand, dumbstruck.

Batali does not specify how tightly to roll the dough. I do so too tightly because fuck everything.

I think I’ve used too much dough.

I think about how the last conversation about compensation I had resulted in someone who made more yearly than I ever will telling me I was holding them “emotionally hostage” and then demanding to know, over and over again why I needed the money.

“Just tell me,” they demanded. “Tell me why you need it.” Over and over until it broke me.

If they are edible, I will eat every single one of these fucking rolls myself.

This is devastatingly sharp writing, and I love it.

Buttery Sesame Seed Scones recipe

While he still had his restaurant open, hubby was looking for little nibbles that we could make in advance and serve to customers who came in hungry and had a line in front of them before getting their food. One of the ideas we had was just house-made scones, so we looked up some scones recipes! This is adapted from a sweet scone recipe we found, but he eliminated the sugar and adjusted the recipe a bit, and also added lots of sesame seeds to it to make it a savoury scone instead. It's a similar technique to biscuits, but the fat/flour proportions are different, and there's no egg in the dough itself (though we do use an egg wash at the end).

These are really excellent, light, and flaky. They go well with butter, cheese, and even fruit jams and jellies. If you don't like/have sesame seeds you could probably use poppy seeds on this as well, or maybe even flax seeds or sunflower seeds. It doesn't require the seeds, we love them because they add flavour and texture, but it's all up to you.

Getting rid of your turkey leftovers - Turkey Soup Recipe

We actually filmed this much closer to making the turkey, but we thought it would make more sense to put it up in the new year, so that the eggnog video could go up before New Years. This is just a super simple and delicious soup made from leftover turkey (from our spatchcocked roasted turkey) and veggies. Of course, it's super easy to customize this recipe with different veggies, hot sauce, Worchestershire, thickened with a roux, adding noodles, whatever you like. This is a basic recipe to add your own flair to!

This is a perfect recipe for keeping warm while this cold front settles in on the Northeast! Hope everyone's staying nice and warm, and also that no one is suffering any major travel disruptions.

Russian tankers fueled North Korea via transfers at sea

Source: CNBC

Russian tankers have supplied fuel to North Korea on at least three occasions in recent months by transferring cargoes at sea, according to two senior Western European security sources, providing an economic lifeline to the secretive Communist state.

The sales of oil or oil products from Russia, the world's second biggest oil exporter and a veto-wielding member of the United Nations Security Council, breach U.N. sanctions, the security sources said.

The transfers in October and November indicate that smuggling from Russia to North Korea has evolved to loading cargoes at sea since Reuters reported in September that North Korean ships were sailing directly from Russia to their homeland.

"There is no evidence that this is backed by the Russian state, but these Russian vessels are giving a lifeline to the North Koreans," the second European security source said.

Daniel Dale once again cataloging Trump's false statements: NYT interview edition

Full article here: Link to Toronto Star website

WASHINGTON—U.S. President Donald Trump sat down Thursday for a rare interview with a media outlet other than Fox News, holding an impromptu 30-minute session with New York Times reported Michael Schmidt at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla.

He made nearly one false claim per minute — 25 false claims in all.

The Star is keeping track of every false claim Trump makes as president. As of Dec. 22, Trump had already made 978 false claims; adding the Times interview, the tally will pass the 1,000 mark in the next update.

Here’s every false claim Trump made in the interview:

1) “But I think it’s all worked out because frankly there is absolutely no collusion, that’s been proven by every Democrat is saying it … Virtually every Democrat has said there is no collusion. There is no collusion.”

Democratic members of Congress have not said en masse that they are convinced that there was no collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia. Some have acknowledged that they have not seen evidence of collusion, but they have pointed out that the investigation is ongoing.

3) “I saw (Democratic Sen.) Dianne Feinstein the other day on television saying there is no collusion.”

Trump appeared to be referring, as he has in the past, to a November CNN interview with Feinstein — in which she did not declare that there is no collusion. Feinstein was specifically asked if she had seen evidence that the Trump campaign was given Democratic emails hacked by Russia. “Not so far,” she responded. She was not asked about collusion more broadly, and her specific answer made clear that she was referring only to evidence she has personally seen to date, not issuing a sweeping final judgment.

4) “She’s (Feinstein) the head of the committee.”

Feinstein, a Democrat, is not the head of any committee: Republicans control Congress and thus lead the committees. She is the ranking member — the top Democrat — on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Also, Daniel Dale is clearly frustrated that no journalist or interviewer seems willing to do their due diligence in an interview with Trump:

https://twitter.com/ddale8/status/946764965796630528

There's a ton of space in between show-boatily cross-examining Trump and cheerfully doing what interviewers do with almost every other politician every day - respectfully prod for logical errors, respectfully encourage to be specific, respectfully request facts and evidence.
