Plano’s Baylor hospital faces hard questions after claims against former neurosurgeon

Christopher Duntsch, once a supremely confident neurosurgeon with a solid résumé and a wealth of potential, fled town in disgrace last year under a scalding cascade of allegations.

-snip-

Duntsch no longer holds a medical license in Texas, but scrutiny has turned to a prestigious hospital where he worked.

Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano now faces hard questions in court: Did it know Duntsch was not fit to practice, and did it fail to stop him?

-snip-

While at Baylor Plano, Duntsch was accused of maiming several patients and causing the death of another. One patient — his roommate and closest friend — claimed that Duntsch operated on him after a night of using cocaine, which Duntsch denied. The roommate emerged from the surgery a quadriplegic.

University of Texas announcer Wally Pryor, ‘Voice of the Longhorns,’ dies at 86

Wally Pryor, the “Voice of the Longhorns,” whose smooth, deadpan style became synonymous with University of Texas football and basketball for nearly 40 years, died Saturday. He was 86.

Pryor’s voice was known to cut through the crowds of tens of thousands at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. His quick announcement of “quarter” encapsulated his straight delivery that was touched with a tinge of humor.

“You can’t say he was ‘no nonsense,’ because there was plenty of nonsense, but at the football games he did his job,” said longtime friend Paul Weyland, who emceed the Chilympiad in San Marcos with Pryor for years.

Fans became well versed with Pryor’s understated hijinks over the years. He turned many of the Longhorn faithful into proxy fans of Slippery Rock University by breaking in with score updates from the small Pennsylvania college. And Pryor would always be sure to let the crowd know that his good friend Hondo Crouch, a former mayor of Luckenbach, needed to once again pick up his drunken grandmother from Scholz Garten or maybe the Broken Spoke.

Happy Texas Independence Day!

[div style="width:40%;"]

1) We aren't seceding.
2) If you are a Texas hater/basher, take your complaints elsewhere. It's a lot easier to close the thread without posting a comment than to write a disparaging remark. Would you like it if we trashed your home?
3) Have a great day, y'all--I'm going to Austin to celebrate!

Man who scuffled naked with Dallas police dies hours after his arrest

An Irving man died Saturday following a bizarre incident in a bar in which he wrestled naked with police, was arrested and then hospitalized. Authorities, who used a Taser on him in the scuffle, said they believe he was also stabbed in the bar before police arrived.

It’s unclear which, if any, of those things killed him. Investigators are treating the case as a death in police custody, but said the cause hasn’t been determined. Authorities did say that the man appeared to be high on PCP at the time of his arrest.

The sequence of events happened on the 3600 block of Colonial Avenue in South Dallas. Officers were called to a bar there at around 1:30 a.m. for a report of an armed encounter. They arrived to find a large crowd outside and a naked man inside “who appeared to be on drugs,” said Lt. Max Geron.

“The subject pulled away from and shoved officers before officers tried using a Taser on the subject,” Geron said. “The Taser had no apparent effect and officers wrestled with the man until they were able to handcuff him.”

Deion Sanders says every team he played on, including the Cowboys, had gay players

Hall of Famer Deion “Prime Time” Sanders delivered a somewhat mixed but overall positive response when asked about openly gay NFL prospect Michael Sam on The Arsenio Hall Show this week.

Sanders said of Sam’s coming out, “I love it.” But then he unfortunately drew a comparison between homosexuality and drugs and alcohol. Sanders, who played on five NFL teams including the Cowboys, went on to say that all of them included gay players.

“I don’t condone nor do I condemn, but I’ve had friends, family members, and every one out here has someone of homosexuality in your family — and someone who’s on drugs and alcohol,” Sanders said. “How can I judge that? It’s up to me to give them love, to give them support, to just be there for them.

“He’s not the first gay guy in the NFL; he’s the first one to come out. Let’s get that straight,” Sanders added. “Every team I played on, there was someone. … We always knew, but he was cool. That was our boy. We had to look out for him. … If he can make plays, he can play the game.”

Immigration Reform 'Fast For Families Across America' Bus Tour Coming To Texas

Fast for Families, an immigration reform advocacy group that believes in the non-violent, fasting measures used by Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi to create social change, has started their second phase of their campaign.

The group launched the "Fast for Families Across America" national bus tour on Monday, hoping to travel to more than 100 congressional districts in order to engage voters in supporting comprehensive immigration reform.

"We want House Speaker John Boehner to understand that we have come too far, too many people have suffered, we have struggled too hard, too many people have died, to give up now," said Service Employees International Union international Secretary-Treasurer Eliseo Medina. "We will keep fighting as long as it takes to make sure America can be the nation of our dreams where everyone is respected, everyone is valued, everyone is welcome."

The bus tour will be making many stops in Texas, in several key districts with Republican members that have contributing in the stalling of immigration reform efforts.

Waco developer spurned by city strips down apartment design

A developer who failed to win public money for a 24-unit downtown apartment complex has drawn poor reviews for his penny-pinching redesign.

The project formerly known as the Mirada now is under construction at 701 S. Sixth St., but without the architectural cut stone and glass-block facade that developer Michael Wray initially presented to city officials.

Instead, the exterior of what is now called Belmont Cottages is clad in plain cement siding, resulting in barn-like structures Wray describes as a “Cape Cod design.”

Wray said the redesign was the result of the Waco City Council rejecting his request last summer for up to $240,000 from the Tax Increment Financing Zone.

A picture of the apartment building and the continuation of the article is at http://www.wacotrib.com/news/business/downtown-developer-spurned-by-city-strips-down-apartment-design/article_11ce9627-8617-50ff-8d61-0b192844530d.html .

March 2014 Women's History Month

Carol Morgan is a career counselor, writer, speaker, former Democratic candidate for the Texas House and the award-winning author of Of Tapestry, Time and Tears, a historical fiction about the 1947 Partition of India.

By Carol Morgan

Recognizing women’s place in history began with President Jimmy Carter and his 1980 proclamation establishing Women’s History Week, but it took seven more years before the celebration was extended to a full month of appreciation.

Most historical research on female movers and shakers is fairly recent. We are still far behind, but newly-discovered personalities are being acknowledged every year. All of us recognize the names Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Tubman, Alice Paul and their contributions to the world, but the names Pauline Sabin, Angelina of Texas, Phoolan Devi, Donaldina Cameron or Louise Bryant are head-scratchers to most.

Why have women in history been ignored for so long? It is because, until recently, history was written mainly by men and therefore, reports were about men’s role in the public sphere. War, politics, economics, and world diplomacy were all men’s roles and the women who attempted to break the barrier to that public sphere were regarded negatively; they were not your average lady.

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, a Harvard historian, coined the oft-quoted phrase in her 2008 book, “Well-behaved women seldom make history.” This brief statement perfectly characterizes the icons of women’s history. They rejected the sex-stereotypical roles of their generation to enact badly-needed change and it required behavior that went against the value-laden views of the day.

I admit that I don't wander into this group very much since I am male. However, this blog would probably not be read outside the Lubbock area so I am posting it because of the historical context and the powerful messages it contains in the final two sentences:

"My advice for women (and men, too), just be yourself and keep moving forward! Be an individual of character, courage and commitment, but add determination and patience to your tool box for an autonomous and self-actualized life."

Sen. Cornyn: Oil and gas programs are 'poverty killer'

LAREDO, TEXAS -- U.S. Sen. John Cornyn called UISD’s (Laredo United) oil and gas program and programs like it “a poverty killer” during Friday afternoon’s Oil, Gas and Energy Summit.

The summit brought several city and county leaders, as well as experts and advocates of the Eagle Ford Shale play, to United High School’s library for a roundtable discussion.

Cornyn’s comment came in response to a question about how oil and gas programs would affect Webb County’s poverty rate, which was at 30.6 percent in 2012, according to U.S. census data.

“I would say together with what’s happening here in terms of the oil and gas industry and where Mexico appears to be going on the other side of the border, this is going to be a huge boom to the whole region,” Cornyn said.

http://www.lmtonline.com/articles/2014/03/01/front/news/doc53112b315c887076469490.txt (Laredo Morning Times)

Cornyn's statement is true for those that find work in the oil & gas exploration industry. However, for those that are not involved in those industries or living on a fixed income the oil boom is devastating since rental rates and increased property appraisals affecting property taxes.

In addition, everyone is affected since the roads in the Eagle Ford Shale area deteriorated substantially and vehicle owners are paying for more frequent repair bills.
