NCGOP seeks ouster of UNC-TV host

Source: WRAL/CBS

RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Republican Party is calling on UNC-TV to break its ties with host and columnist D.G. Martin.

Martin is the longtime host of the popular "NC Bookwatch" program on the statewide public television station. He's also a longtime political columnist whose left-leaning columns appear weekly in publications around the state. The two are separate ventures.

In his most recent column, Martin seems to compare supporters of Republican legislative leaders to apologists for the recently ousted Egyptian government and for the Nazi regime in Germany.

The column in question is titled "Egypt, Nazi Germany, and North Carolina," datelined July 29.

Source: WRAL

Democratic strategist Nation Hahn and his wife, fundraiser Jamie Hahn, are hospitalized today after a bizarre stabbing attack Monday afternoon at their Raleigh home.

The couple were listed Tuesday Morning in critical condition at WakeMed. Sources close to the family say Jamie has been gravely injured.

Police say the suspect is Jonathon Wayne Broyhill, a longtime friend of the couple. Friends say Broyhill was best man at their 2009 wedding.

He's been charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Broyhill also was injured in the incident and is hospitalized in serious condition.

There's no indication yet what prompted the attack. Raleigh police say the information they've gathered to date "indicates the events underlying the incident were not domestic in nature."

Family: Clayton woman's body left in towed car after wreck

Source: WRAL

Smithfield, N.C. — Relatives of a Clayton woman said Tuesday that her body was found in her car days after it ran off a highway and was towed off.

Carolyn Ann Watkins' 2000 Pontiac was found in a watery ditch, down a steep embankment off Swift Creek Road, about 4 miles southwest of Smithfield on Friday and was towed to an impound lot, according to a report from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The report states "no driver (was) at the scene of this collision."

Watkins, 62, was last seen Thursday, but her family didn't report her missing to the Smithfield Police Department until Monday, when she failed to show up at work. They say authorities then found her body in the driver's seat of the Pontiac.

Spring Lake dog attacked with samurai sword

A dog in Spring Lake was injured after a neighbor got annoyed with the dog's barking and attacked it with a samurai sword.

Dr. John Lauby, director of Cumberland County Animal Services, said officials responded to the home Wednesday after they learned about the attack.

The unidentified assailant cut off about three-quarters of the dog's ear and left a large cut on the dog's shoulder area, Lauby said.

"It is ghastly," Lauby said. "Animals, they don't understand their ears cut off. They just deal with it."

Lauby said the owner initially thought the dog was hit by a car. However, a different neighbor who was not involved in the incident, told the owner what happened.

This has to be one of the most horrific stories that I have ever read. WTVD also has pictures and a related video on their site. I want to warn everyone before they watch the video to be prepared for some really graphic images. It's sickening that an individual did this to that dog. I hope they get prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Russian nuclear bombers intercepted near Guam

Source: NBC

U.S. military officials tell NBC News that two Russian bombers, capable of carrying nuclear cruise missiles, circled the U.S. island of Guam in the Western Pacific this week. U.S. Air Force F-15 jets scrambled from Andersen Air Force Base on Guam to intercept the bombers.

According to one military official, the Russian Bear bombers remained in international airspace, the encounter between the U.S. and Russian aircraft “stayed professional” and there was no incident. The official said it’s impossible to determine whether the Russian bombers carried any nuclear weapons.

U.S. long-range radars and satellites tracked the two bombers as they took off from northeastern Russia and headed south on a long-range flight that required “multiple refueling.” Japan also scrambled fighter jets as the bombers passed near but did not enter Japanese airspace.
