Tipping at holiday time, for or against?

I am for it, modestly of course, if someone has really been of service to you in your day to day life, even if it is just providing a friendly greeting. Opinions?

British, Canadian, and Aussie friends of mine are gobsmacked,

that we have tragedy after tragedy of this nature, yet seem to lack the will to do anything about it really.
Less easy access to automatic weapons, more help for those most likely to do these horrible things would be a a start, I think. I don't pretend to be smart enough to come up with a one size fits all solution, but something needs to be done about mental illness and access to the guns designed to quickly kill many.
In my neighborhood we have not had mass shootings like this, thankfully. But, the increase of crimes committed by mentally ill (homeless usually), like the rape of an elderly Bird Watcher in Central Park, or the father pushed on to the subway tracks to die horribly really highlight the need to care for each other. Yes, changing the way we treat guns and people is needed--it will cost money, it may cost some freedoms. But won't it be worth it to try to prevent the slaughter of innocents?

Is this like West Side Story, or the Outsiders?

Ok, so I have not been a DU'er for forever....less than a year in fact since my first post. I know some folks don't count the time some of us lurk before chipping in for star membership.

Can someone explain to me what all the Meta/Lounge freaking out is about? It so doesn't look very sane or constructive to me. Meta and the Lounge used to be a fun break from the seriousness of politics. I just don't get it. Maybe I don't spend enough time here, but I just don't alert on anything I disagree with, I comment OR just move on if it is not of interest. Who has the time for all this drama and upset?

Rush! Inducted at last!!!!

I have to say, it is long over due!
Grabbed from CNN: 02:31 PM ET
2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees announced

The new class of inductees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been announced, and it includes rockers, the Queen of Disco, a group of hip hop pioneers and a band whose fans have long been clamoring for the honor.

In the performer category, Heart, Albert King, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Rush and Donna Summer will receive the prestigious induction. Lou Adler and Quincy Jones will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which is given to non-performers.

A few of those selected to be part of the 2013 group had been nominated before, but none have had the fan support for entry into the hallowed Hall of Fame as first time nominees Rush. The band had been eligible for nomination for the past 14 years.

Member Alex Lifeson told CNN after the group was nominated back in October that the honor meant a great deal to his group's fan base.

"For our fans, it's very, very important, and we feel great for them," he said. "We're at the next stage and we'll see if we're actually inducted. If so, we'll support it in every way we can for our fans." Read More:

The Legality of these pranks

is of no importance to me. Society is rife with bullies, who for the most part are kids with out the vision to think their actions through. We all say we want less of this behavior in our society. Yet, we have hugely popular shows with this kind of prank, and others even more dangerous and mean spirited offered as entertainment. When adults engage in behavior without regard to consequences to such behavior, then sometimes the results are really tragic. I want to see the right thing done here. The two pranksters need to admit that this sort of crap can go really wrong, they should not have made the call, and make a huge payment to the care of that poor woman's children.

Buying Made in USA for xmas

I want to help create some g-darn jobs already, tired of my pay going to China instead of here at home. I have stopped purchasing cheap job killing crap, but I want to carry that further into the holiday giving portion of my year.
So, I've been trying to purchase Made In USA only for presents for my family this year. And I am kinda coming up short! I found some clothing at Justice Clothing, and a french press made in California, but I am really hoping for other modestly priced suggestions. Hint, Hint, Hint!

The Norquist Effect, not like turkey sleepy time

Remember last year when the unwillingness of a Tea Party-ish Congress to raise the debt ceiling damaged our country's credit rating? And do you recall the same folks calling for austerity cuts to social safety net programs instead of raising taxes on billionaires, to reduce the national deficit? It's all most time for the fiscal cliff joyride again!

The fans of balancing the budget on the backs of the poor children and elderly of America, really dug their heels in on anything that might make the sitting President look like he was helping the economy, at the cost of hurting their fellow Americans, well, they are all just great admirers of Grover Norquist.

Now, Grover's been described as “The dark wizard of the Right's anti-tax cult.” He is very good at his job, which is helping the uber rich keep most of their incomes, and convincing the right people to aid him in that aim. He will tirelessly stay on message on political shows, in his magazine and internet columns, at D.C. insider parties, and in the very halls of our government to accomplish that purpose. Grover Norquist is unsurprisingly, the founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform. More at: Livendepolitics
