Eliz Warren response to #MuellerReport: House should initiate impeachment proceedings against POTUS"

I am starting to agree more and more.

The Mueller report lays out facts showing that a hostile foreign government attacked our 2016 election to help Donald Trump and Donald Trump welcomed that help. Once elected, Donald Trump obstructed the investigation into that attack.

To ignore a President’s repeated efforts to obstruct an investigation into his own disloyal behavior would inflict great and lasting damage on this country, and it would suggest that both the current and future Presidents would be free to abuse their power in similar ways.

The severity of this misconduct demands that elected officials in both parties set aside political considerations and do their constitutional duty. That means the House should initiate impeachment proceedings against the President of the United States

Pollster Dritan Nesho said in an interview that aired Friday on Hill.TV's "What America's Thinking" that there is a shift in independent voters' views of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

"Who you see shifting in terms of their opinions are independents," Nesho, the CEO of HarrisX, told host Jamal Simmons on Wednesday.

"Republicans have largely been consistent in their view of the investigation, considering it to be biased or in many cases, baseless," he continued.

"Democrats have been very consistent in their view of the investigation, considering it to be absolutely necessary and believing that there was evidence of collusion or obstruction beyond some of the actions that Trump had taken," he said.

"It's the independents in the middle that right now are breaking in favor of the president, [and] largely accept [Attorney General William] Barr's memo and his conclusions," he said.

The interview was conducted before Barr released a redacted version of Mueller's long-anticipated report on Thursday.

For the third time in three years, the United States’ standing in an annual index of press freedom declined, a result the report’s authors attributed to President Trump’s anti-press rhetoric and continuing threats to journalists.

Reporters Without Borders, the international group that compiles the World Press Freedom Index, ranked the United States 48th among 180 nations and territories it surveyed. The U.S. ranking fell three spots from 2018, continuing a downward trend that began in 2016.

The United States finished just above Senegal and just below Romania on this year’s list.

It also fell into the ranks of countries whose treatment of journalists is considered “problematic,” the first time the United States has been so classified since the organization began the index in 2002.

The top ranks were dominated once again by European countries: Norway ranked first for the third time in a row, followed by Finland, Sweden, Netherlands and Denmark.
The bottom of the list included, in descending order, Vietnam, China, Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan............................

Mueller report ropes in Senate GOP

Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr apparently supplied the White House counsel’s office with information about the Russia probe.

.......Senate Intelligence Chairman Burr (R-N.C.), for instance, apparently supplied the White House counsel's office with information about FBI investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, according to the report. The report says that on March 9, 2017, then-FBI Director James Comey briefed congressional leaders and intelligence committee heads on the ongoing investigation into Russian interference. That briefing included "an identification of the principal U.S. subjects of the investigation."

Burr then corresponded with the White House a week later about the Russia probes, and the White House counsel's office, led by Don McGahn, "appears to have received information about the status of the FBI investigation," the special counsel report said.

Caitlin Carroll, a spokeswoman for Burr, said that the senator “does not recall this specific conversation with Mr. McGahn in March of 2017; however, any conversations between the two would have been in reference to the need for White House personnel to voluntarily comply with the Senate Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation.”
Report

The Senate Intelligence probe has been widely viewed on Capitol Hill as more productive than its corresponding House investigation. There's been far less infighting and Burr has taken steps to distance himself from conflicts of interest, including skipping meetings with Trump while he's been overseeing investigations. Former House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), now the committee's ranking member, was seen by Democrats as far more partisan than Burr in his probes.

“If specific individuals were discussed, they would have been those known to the committee, the White House, and the media. The Chairman’s stewardship over the Committee’s bipartisan and fact-based investigation over the last two years speaks for itself,” Carroll said.

But Burr communicating with Trump's aides about the FBI probe could undercut some of those warm bipartisan feelings. The Senate Intelligence Committee's ranking member, Mark Warner (D-Va.), did not respond to a request for comment but Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), a member of the panel, made an indirect reference to Burr in a statement on Thursday.

"Given evidence from the Mueller report, the committee must take steps to ensure its investigations do not leak to the executive branch," he said..............

Less than one in five registered voters say they paid less in taxes during the first year of President Trump's landmark tax law, a Hill-HarrisX poll released Monday finds.

Only 18 percent of respondents say they are paying less in federal taxes for 2018 compared to 2017 in the survey, which was taken ahead of the April 15 tax deadline.

A majority said their 2018 tax bill was about the same or higher compared to 2017. Thirty-two percent said their federal taxes were higher under the Trump tax law. A plurality of respondents, 36 percent, said they owed about the same in federal taxes compared to the previous year. Fourteen percent said they were not sure whether they paid more or less.

Monday marked the filing deadline in most states. Trump's tax law delivered $1.5 trillion in cuts to businesses and individuals but the poll highlights how most Americans don't believe they benefited under the changes.

The survey's finding that 18 percent of voters believe their taxes went down is similar to a March poll from NBC News and The Wall Street Journal which found that only 17 percent of adults contacted believed their federal liability had declined in 2018.

According to estimates compiled by the Tax Policy Center, the law will cut individual taxes for two-thirds of households, 65 percent, while raising individual income taxes for 6 percent .............................................
