Queen Elizabeth II, master of soft power, celebrates her 93rd birthday with a massive parade

Source: washpost

President Trump and Queen Elizabeth II reviewed items from the Royal Collection at Britain's Buckingham Palace on June 3. (The Washington Post)

LONDON — President Trump and his family got the royal treatment from Queen Elizabeth II this past week — and the American president was all in, gushing to Fox News that it was a highlight of his life, that the British monarch was “a spectacular .?.?. incredible woman” and that the two leaders shared an “automatic chemistry.”

“There are those that say they have never seen the queen have a better time,” the president said.

Well, well. The Brits may arch an eyebrow at that. Who exactly are those who say Elizabeth has never, in a 67-year reign, had a better time?

But that’s what the queen does. She casts that queenly spell.

The toasts and sashes and trumpets and the men in big furry hats and scarlet tunics, which were bestowed upon Trump on his state visit on Monday, were nothing compared to the spectacle to celebrate the queen’s official birthday on Saturday, when her honor guards hosted the largest military parade of the year in Britain — known as the annual Trooping of the Color — not for a visiting dignitary, but the 93-old monarch herself...............................

Pelosi accuses Trump of 'threats and temper tantrums' in Mexico negotiations

Source: Wash Post

June 8 at 2:44 PM

As President Trump spent Saturday morning celebrating his deal with Mexico to stem the entry of migrants into the United States, Democrats denounced it as another example of the president’s fixing a crisis of his own making.

“President Trump undermined America’s preeminent leadership role in the world by recklessly threatening to impose tariffs on our close friend and neighbor to the south,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a statement. “Threats and temper tantrums are no way to negotiate foreign policy.”

The U.S. and Mexican governments announced Friday night that they had reached a deal in which the White House would hold off on its threat to impose a 5 percent tariff on all Mexican goods being imported into the United States. In exchange, Mexico agreed to implement “strong measures” to slow the flow of migrants across its territory toward the southern U.S. border.

Several of Trump’s would-be 2020 Democratic challengers condemned the deal and how it was reached.

“The damage of Trump’s reckless trade policies and tariffs has already been done,” former congressman Beto O’Rourke said on Twitter. “What we see is yet another example of him trying to be both the arsonist who created this problem in the first place and the firefighter who wants credit for addressing it.”

After a campaign event in Des Moines Saturday, Pete Buttigieg said the president’s deal amounted to a “face saving maneuver” for a negotiating tactic that wasn’t working.

Some U.S. embassies still hoisting rainbow flags, despite advisory from Washington

Source: wash Post

June 8 at 4:23 PM

Since the State Department began rejecting all embassy requests to hoist rainbow flags outside the mission buildings during LGBTQ Pride Month this year, some U.S. diplomats have been finding ways to defy, or at least get around, the new policy.

The facades of the U.S. missions in Seoul and Chennai, India, are partially hidden behind large rainbow flags, while the embassy in New Delhi is aglow in rainbow colored lights. The website for the embassy in Santiago, Chile, shows a video of the chief diplomat raising a rainbow flag last month for the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

The Vienna embassy’s website features a photo of a rainbow flag flying below Old Glory on a mast jutting from the building, a statement by Diplomats for Equality and a story about a professor lecturing on the visibility and growth of LGBT rights.

U.S. diplomats in Jerusalem joined a March for Pride and Tolerance, and several ambassadors have tweeted photos of themselves in local Pride parades or standing outside the embassies surrounded by employees holding up letters spelling PRIDE.

Trump really is a vindictive, petty little man.

Laura Ingraham tell her audience to disbelieve something Trump just told her...............

Karma bites sometimes.

Watch Laura Ingraham tell her audience to disbelieve something Trump just told her

The final, most essential command.
By Aaron Rupar@atrupar Jun 7, 2019, 12:20pm EDT

Laura Ingraham’s interview from Normandy with President Donald Trump — one in which the graves of Allied service members were used as a backdrop for Trump to trash Democratic congressional leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer — illustrated the extreme lengths Fox News is willing to go to protect the president.

Immediately after the interview aired on Thursday night, Ingraham advised her viewers to disbelieve something they just heard the president say.

“Some of you may have heard or read that President Trump supposedly held up the entire D-Day ceremony in order to do this interview with me,” Ingraham said. “That is patently false — fake news.”

The ceremony did indeed start late. Although a number of reporters initially pinned blame for that on Trump, it turned out the culprit was French President Emmanuel Macron, who was running even later than Trump. But Trump put it differently in the interview itself. He told Ingraham, for the world to see, that he was holding up the D-Day commemoration ceremony in order to finish talking with her.

“Listen to those incredible people back there,” Trump said, referring to people who were gathered to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. “These people are so amazing, and what they don’t realize is that I’m holding them up because of this interview, but that’s because it’s you. By the way, congratulations on your ratings. I’m very proud.”..

Trump's giant gender gap: 62 percent of women say they are unlikely to vote for him

I don't think our country would survive another term of this creep.

Trump's giant gender gap: 62 percent of women say they are unlikely to vote for him

https://thehill.com/hilltv/what-americas-thinking/447308-trumps-giant-gender-gap-62-percent-of-women-say-they-are

6/6/2019

In a new poll, a significant majority of American women who are registered to vote say they are not likely to support President Trump’s re-election effort in 2020, setting him up with a gender gap that may prove difficult to overcome.

In a June 1-2 Hill-HarrisX survey, 62 percent of female registered voters said they were unlikely to support Trump’s bid to obtain a second term. Fifty-three percent said they were very unlikely to back Trump while 9 percent said they were somewhat unlikely. Thirty-eight percent of women who participated said they were likely to back Trump.

In the 2016 election, exit polls indicated that 41 percent of women who voted chose Trump meaning that he has likely lost some support from women during his presidency.

The survey found that male voters were more evenly split about re-electing the president with 51 percent of respondents saying they were either somewhat or very likely to support him and 49 percent saying they were somewhat or very unlikely to support Trump, within the poll’s 3.1 percent sampling margin of error.

A majority of women of all age groups said they would decline to support Trump while men’s opinions differed based upon their ages. A 57 percent majority of men between 18 and 34 said they were unlikely to support Trump while a narrow majority of men 35 and up, 54 percent, said they were likely to support the president.

When both sexes are combined, 56 percent of all registered voters said they would be unlikely to back Trump's re-election while 44 percent said they would be likely to.

Long-term polling from the Pew Research Center and others has indicated that women have been more favorable to the Democratic Party but Trump's particular style has accelerated the trend. A large-scale sample the Center conducted in 2018 found that a majority of women identify as Democrats or are independents who lean toward the party.....................................

House Intel Announces Open Hearing On Counter Intel Aspects Of Mueller Report

Source: TpM

June 7, 2019 1:06 pm

....................................

The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday morning, is titled “Lessons from the Mueller Report: Counterintelligence Implications of Volume 1.”

The committee has not announced specific witnesses yet, but said in a press release that, over the course of a series of hearings, it will hear from “fact witnesses, national security experts, and others connected to the Special Counsel’s investigation to elucidate the issues and findings in the first volume of the report.”

The committee previously held a public hearing on Russia’s use of oligarchs and money to influence politics, but that hearing occurred before the public Mueller report was released.

“Since the release of the Mueller report, the American public has learned much about the President’s conduct, his campaign’s interactions with Russia and that nation’s interference in our election and affairs,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) said. “The evidence has been both criminal and non-criminal, and implicated deep counterintelligence concerns over the potential compromise of U.S. persons. Our Committee’s goal will be to explain to the American people the serious counterintelligence concerns raised by the Mueller Report, examine the depth and breadth of the unethical and unpatriotic conduct it describes, and produce prescriptive remedies to ensure that this never happens again.”

Trump Admin Won't Let US Embassies Fly Pride Flags On Official Flagpoles

Source: TPM

June 7, 2019 3:59 pm

The State Department has rejected at least four U.S. embassies’ requests to fly the rainbow pride flag on their official flagpoles during the month of June, NBC News reported.

Three U.S. diplomats told NBC that embassies in Israel, Germany, Brazil and Latvia were denied requests to fly the flag. The rainbow pride flag can reportedly be hung in other spaces around the embassy, but not on the pole alongside the American flag.

The denials are reportedly coming from State Department’s undersecretary for management’s office, according to NBC.

The Trump administration has made significant moves to dismantle LGBT rights since he took office, most notably when Trump announced via Twitter his ban on transgender people serving in the military...............
