McCarthy suggests new commission could look at Social Security and Medicare cuts
Source: raw story
Sarah K. Burris May 31, 2023, 4:01 PM ET
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced Wednesday he was launching a commission tasked with looking at budget cuts and he suggested Social Security and Medicare could come under his scalpel.
His pledge came just months after vowing such cuts to mandatory spending programs were off the table.
In February, President Joe Biden spoke before a joint session of Congress, telling Americans the GOP wanted to cut the programs they had paid into their whole lives. "Instead of making the wealthy pay their fair share, some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset every five years," he said.
"That means those programs will go away if Congress doesnt vote to keep them. Other Republicans say if we dont cut Social Security and Medicare, theyll let America default on its debt for the first time in our history."
.................
McCarthy told Fox host Harris Faulkner that only 11 percent of the budget could be negotiated during the debt ceiling talks because Biden had "walled off" parts of it including the part that included discretionary spending programs.
Now, he said, "We have to look at the entire budget."

Chinese jet flew past nose of U.S. plane, says Pentagon

Story by Courtney Kube and Mosheh Gains Yesterday 4:56 PM
A Chinese fighter jet flew directly in front of the nose of a U.S. reconnaissance plane over the South China Sea on Saturday, said the Pentagon Tuesday, another in a rising number of incidents involving Chinese military aircraft and ships.
The unnecessarily aggressive maneuver by the Chinese J-16 forced the U.S. RC-125 to fly through the fighter jets wake turbulence, according to the Pentagon, which released video of the encounter.
The Pentagon said that the U.S. plane was conducting safe and routine operations
in international airspace, in accordance with international law.
A senior Defense Department official said, We have seen an alarming increase in the number of risky aerial intercepts and confrontations at sea by PLA aircraft and vessels. As leaders have said, actions such as these have the potential to create an unsafe incident or miscalculation."
The official said the video was not released until Tuesday because of the declassification process.............................................................

Summer interactions inside Trumps home and private club are part of the special counsels classified documents investigation

Listen
A Mar-a-Lago employee who helped move boxes of documents last June has been questioned about his conduct weeks later related to a government demand for surveillance footage from Donald Trumps property, according to a person familiar with the federal probe of the former presidents handling of classified material.
The employees actions in June and July have caught the attention of special counsel Jack Smiths investigators as they try to determine whether Trump or people close to him sought to obstruct justice in the face of a grand jury subpoena to return all documents marked classified, or lied about what happened, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive investigation.
The Washington Post reported last week that the employee was questioned repeatedly by investigators after he was seen on video footage helping another Trump aide, Walt Nauta, move boxes into a Mar-a-Lago storage room on June 2, the day before a top Justice Department official arrived with FBI agents to collect classified material in response to the subpoena.
...................
The employee later told investigators that the conversation was innocent and was not about trying to hide anything from authorities, saying that he didnt know at the time about the investigation or subpoena, according to another person familiar with the probe.
But those answers were met with skepticism, people familiar with the situation said...........................

Many Pride groups in Florida are canceling the month-filled celebrations as multiple anti-LGBTQ bills hitting the state have left the community, and its allies, fearful of repercussions.

Its not exactly being welcomed by the community where were having it. In fact, yesterday I just got a cease and desist from them, telling me not to mention them at all. They dont want this to take place, but were gonna persevere, ................

Olivani also shares with TNA co-host Danielle Moodie what its like to be a member of the LGBTQ community at this time, in such a rural part of the state at that (theres no tolerance here), and the impact that the bans have been having on the youth of the community especially.
They also say that the recent legislation under Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, now also a 2024 presidential candidate, has triggered what theyd call a mass migration out of the state.
Its too much, they say.........................

Land around the U.S. is sinking. Here are some of the fastest areas
Source: washington post
Story by Kasha Patel 3h ago
Many of the fastest sinking places in the world appear in populated areas in southeast Asia largely because of groundwater extraction, but the United States also faces substantial land subsidence. There, you may not notice land settling around you in your daily life, but scientists found that many places are sinking faster than global sea levels are rising increasing flood risk in coastal cities. (Sea levels are rising at an average global rate of about 3.4 millimeters, or 0.13 inches, per year.)
Regions with the highest land subsidence in the United States are mainly located along the East and Gulf Coast, but here we selected a few hot spots around the country.
Gulf Coast: Houston
The western Gulf Coast is experiencing some of the fastest land subsidence rates in the United States.
Analyzing land subsidence rates in large coastal cities, Bekaert and his colleagues found Houston has the fastest peak subsidence rates about 17 millimeters per year from 2014 to 2020 in the United States. Other research showed parts of Houston lost over 3 meters in elevation in certain areas since 1917. ...........................
Gulf Coast: New Orleans
.........................
Norfolk has the highest rate of sea level rise on the East Coast. Land subsidence plays no small part. Virginias Hampton Roads area is sinking at around twice as fast as waters are rising. In a study from 2020, Bekaert and his colleagues found Norfolk and Virginia Beach were sinking at more than 3.5 millimeters per year, with some sections sinking slower or faster. ....................................................

One of the five members of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantiss (R) handpicked Disney oversight board has resigned just three months after taking his post, according to local reports.
Michael Sasso, a Florida attorney, was named to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District by DeSantis on Feb. 27, when legislation was signed giving the state government control of Walt Disney Worlds special tax district.
Reports have not made clear what prompted Sassos resignation.
Sasso could not be immediately reached for comment by The Hill.
Last week, DeSantis appointed Sassos wife, Judge Meredith Sasso, to the states Supreme Court.

Temu Is Losing Millions of Dollars to Send You Cheap Socks

Temu Is Losing Millions of Dollars to Send You Cheap Socks
The Chinese shopping app is topping app stores in the US. But its burning money and squeezing its suppliers to a breaking point in a bid to take on Amazon.
https://www.wired.com/story/temu-is-losing-millions-of-dollars-to-send-you-cheap-socks/?utm_source=pocket-newtab
Eight makeup brushes for less than a dollar, with free international shipping, is surely too good to be true. But in the lightning deals section of Temu, the prices are all unbelievable50 hair bands for $1.17, 10 pairs of socks for $3.87, six lip balms for $0.97.
Temu, owned by the Chinese tech giant PDD, has exploded onto the top of US app stores since it launched last September, targeting cash-strapped Americans with cheap unbranded products shipped directly from Guangzhou, China. In just seven months, Temus app has been downloaded 50 million times.
But the reason that prices on Temu seem impossibly low is that they are. An analysis of the companys supply chain costs by WIREDconfirmed by a company insidershows that Temu is losing an average of $30 per order as it throws money at trying to break into the American market. The financial company China Merchants Securities has calculated that Temu, which is also operating in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, is losing between RMB 4.15 billion and RMB 6.73 billion ($588 million to $954 million) per year. At the same time, the company is squeezing small manufacturers in China, pressuring them to cut prices to levels that make it almost impossible to turn a profit.
We are working for Temu for free so that Temu can attract more American customers, says Sandy, who started selling pet products on the platform soon after it launched, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals. Temu did not respond to a request for comment.
Spending big on deep discounts in order to build market share has already worked well for PDD in China. Pinduoduo, PDDs Chinese flagship company, burst into the local ecommerce market in 2015, differentiating itself from Taobao and JD.com, which dominated the market at the time, by selling cut-price white-labeled or unbranded goods, and targeting people on lower-incomes in rural areas. To bring people onto the platform, it subsidized prices on everything from unbranded homewares to high-end smartphones. That is how Pinduoduo gained market share in China, they know how to use these strategies really well, says Veronica Si, a researcher specializing in ecommerce platforms......................
Nevada legislature blocks governor approving guns to those convicted of hate crimes after prison
Source: raw story
Sarah K. Burris May 29, 2023, 3:48 PM ET
The Nevada Independent reported Monday that the state Senate passed a veto override of Gov. Joe Lombardo (R-NV), who blocked a set of gun safety laws that would stop those convicted of a hate crime in the last ten years from getting a gun.
There were three Democrat-proposed gun control measures, the report explained, and the GOP governor vetoed all of them.
I will not support legislation that infringes on the constitutional rights of Nevadans, Lombardo said in a release Wednesday. As I stated in my letters, much of the legislation I vetoed today is in direct conflict with legal precedent and established constitutional protections. Therefore, I cannot support them.
The other gun legislation would criminalize bringing a gun within 100 feet of an election site and a measure that would raise the legal age to purchase a semi-automatic rifle and shotgun to 21. That bill also sought to close legal loopholes that allow for so-called "ghost guns."
