pbmus's JournalWho will really be the Next President of the United States?
As the Trump administration organizational chart comes into focus, the big question is whether the most powerful man in the world will be Mike Pence or Reince Priebus. Or Steve Bannon.
This has certainly been the most extraordinary transition of power in recent American history. Donald Trump has effectively sought to assert the prerogatives of the presidency and make U.S. foreign policy from the moment he was elected, rather than waiting for niceties like actually being sworn into office or for his predecessor to leave. But even with the astonishing spectacle of Trumpian tweet storms to captivate us, the most interesting dimensions of this transition may well be found where they always are, down in the weeds, in the details of the emerging organizational chart of the government that is being put in place.
There is a long tradition in Washington of the fortunes of administrations and of key players within those administrations being made amid the seemingly innocuous structural and personnel decisions that come daily, often with little fanfare, during the months between the election in November and the inauguration in January. Incoming National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger ensured that he would chair important committees in Richard Nixons administration and thus undercut his potential rival, incoming Secretary of State William Rogers, by getting a few key memos approved by Nixon during the transition. His successor in the Jimmy Carter years, Zbigniew Brzezinski, did the same, infuriating and neutralizing the influence of incoming Secretary of State Cyrus Vance. Ronald Reagan invited chaos into his White House by appointing a troika to lead it and downgrading the influence of the office of the national security advisor. Bill Clinton changed the dynamic of his its the economy, stupid administration when he created the National Economic Council (NEC) and installed the exceptionally effective and empowered Robert Rubin as its boss. Examples abound.

"Trump is so corrupt that if Democrats controlled even one chamber of Congress, he'd be done before he even got started," tweeted Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro.

The Big Con should be arrested...
Donald J. Trump should be investigated, formally charged and indicted for treason if this turns out to be true. His connections to Vladimir Putin and the FSB should be given a serious look by Congress with the same vigor displayed by Trey Gowdy when his committee investigated Hillary Clinton on Benghazi. Which, in fact, found absolutely nothing that could be considered criminal by any court in this country.
Call the Senate Ethics Committee at 202-224-2981 ask them to investigate Herr Gropenfuhrer until the investigation is complete! You can leave a message on their voicemail.
The definition of treason: 18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason: Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the U.S. penal code. ~Patrick

WASHINGTON The C.I.A., the F.B.I. and the White House may all agree that Russia was behind the hacking that interfered with the election. But that was of no import to the website Breitbart News, which dismissed reports on the intelligence assessment as left-wing fake news.
Rush Limbaugh has diagnosed a more fundamental problem. The fake news is the everyday news in the mainstream media, he said on his radio show recently. They just make it up.
Some supporters of President-elect Donald J. Trump have also taken up the call. As reporters were walking out of a Trump rally this month in Orlando, Fla., a man heckled them with shouts of Fake news!
Until now, that term had been widely understood to refer to fabricated news accounts that are meant to spread virally online. But conservative cable and radio personalities, top Republicans and even Mr. Trump himself, incredulous about suggestions that fake stories may have helped swing the election, have appropriated the term and turned it against any news they see as hostile to their agenda.

Whats the truth? Conservative talk-show hosts, right-wing media, and Trump himself are on a campaign to discredit traditional sources of facts and analysis scientists, economists, criminologists, government data, and mainstream media -- and substitute their preferred reality.
For example:
1. The CIA and FBI say Russia interfered with the election to benefit Trump. But Trump disagrees. And Breitbart News (until recently under the watch of Trumps strategic advisor Steven Bennan) dismisses the CIA report as left-wing fake news.
2. Almost all scientists agree climate change is real and is caused by humans. But Trump disagrees. And so does Scott Pruitt, his nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency.
3. The F.B.I. and virtually all criminologists agree that the rate of homicides in the U.S. has plummeted in recent years. But Trump says its soared. So does Fox News.
4. Most health policy analysts agree that Medicares costs are rising both because the costs of health care are rising and the American population is aging. But Paul Ryan and many Republicans in Congress say Medicare itself is to blame.
5. Government data show the rate of illegal immigration has declined sharply over the last ten years, and that undocumented immigrants commit proportionately fewer crimes than native-born Americans. But Trump claims the opposite is true, and both Breitbart and Fox News agree with Trump.
6. Most economists and policy analysts dont think that tax cuts to the rich result in better wages for most people. But Trumps economic advisers contend otherwise.
On almost every major issue to be addressed over the next few years, Trump and the rightwing media are already feeding Americans big lies, and trying to discredit traditional sources of truth. This poses one of the greatest threats to our democracy.
