A day in the life of Lloyd Squires, Vermont's 'best' bagel maker

Evan Weiss, Burlington Free Press
Updated 11:20 a.m. ET Nov. 20, 2018

Excerpt:

5:18 a.m.
Batch two is ready for rolling.

There are five ingredients in the dough:

King Arthur's Sir Lancelot High-Gluten Flour
Malted Barley Flour
Sugar
Water
Yeast

6:47 a.m.
Lloyd rolls with Kyle again.

Matt and Kyle explain how Lloyd can roll a bagel and throw it perfectly into place anywhere across the table, or even into the oven.

Baker Matt Audette, 25, covers the boiled bagels in rosemary. They go in the oven immediately.

The bagels are flipped and flung using a long wooden paddle called a shebah. The spelling of this word varies. When asked why it's called a shebah, Lloyd says, "That's what he called it."

"He" means Myer.

WCAX-3 Video: Does Bernie Sanders want to be president?

By Neal Goswami | Posted: Thu 6:51 PM, Nov 15, 2018

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) Now that the midterm elections are past, the next presidential campaign is beginning to take shape. And one big question is whether Bernie Sanders will run again. Our Neal Goswami spoke with the senator about that this week.

Reporter Neal Goswami: Do you want to be president?

Sen. Bernie Sanders/I-Vermont: (laughs) Being president is an enormous responsibility. I think everyone understands that. I'll tell you what I do want very much. I think the current president-- I just have to say it-- is a pathological liar. I think he has strong authoritarian tendencies and he does not respect democracy. When you have a president who considers mainstream media to be an enemy of the people, this is a pretty dangerous moment. So if you're asking me what is most important to me, it's that Donald Trump doesn't get elected.

Neal Goswami: So there's a difference between feeling a calling and answering a call that people put out there and there's wanting to be president-- do you feel one or the other?

Sen. Bernie Sanders: Well, I did run for president. I think there's a historical record for that, so that may tell you something. Ok. Thank you.

Sanders says he doesn't have a timeline for making a decision. He says he will be talking to people around the country to see if they think he would be a strong candidate.

Today, in addition to commemorating Veterans Day, we also recognize the centennial of Armistice Day

Vermonters have a long and proud history of military service, participating in every major military conflict in U.S. history, dating back to the Green Mountain Boys’ role in the American Revolution.

Today, in addition to commemorating Veterans Day, we also recognize the centennial of Armistice Day and the end of World War I, a war in which many Vermonters bravely served and lost their lives. On days like this we are reminded of the sacrifices made by all those women and men who have worn the uniform in defense of our nation. We owe our veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude, which we will never truly be able to repay. While we set aside this day to recognize their service, we must commit ourselves to keep America’s promise to our veterans, just as they kept their promise to us.

We are fortunate here in Vermont to have such strong support for veterans. From local veterans’ service organizations, to the VA Hospital in White River Junction, to the seven Community Based Outpatient Centers that serve Vermonters, to the two Vet Centers, veterans throughout our state have a place to go when they need care, services or just someone to talk to who understands their unique experiences.

As a longtime member and former Chair of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I am honored to work every day to keep that promise to our veterans and their families. Now, more than ever, it is critical that we all work together to preserve, protect and improve the VA. What I hear from veterans all over Vermont is that we must strengthen the VA, not dismantle it. I hear them, and I promise to ensure that these veterans and their families in Vermont and around the country receive every benefit they have earned and deserve.

My recent trip to the local Burlington antique shop yielded some WWI gold; yet another WWI UVM panoramic photo to add to my extensive collection of war photography. This one was taken in August of 1918 in front of Williams Hall at the University of Vermont. I spent countless hours studying anthropology and archaeology in the hallowed halls of Williams, and I know the front facade well. From the looks of it, not much has changed! This photo shows Company C of the US Army Training Detachment which was housed at UVM in the months preceding the end of the war.
