March 20 - Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders to attend union rally at UCLA

BY MELISSA MORRIS
Posted: March 12, 2019 1:33 pm

Senator and 2020 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will speak at a union rally at UCLA next week.

Sanders will speak at 12 p.m. March 20 at a rally for University Professional and Technical Employees-Communications Workers of America 9119. The location of the rally is still being determined as of this story’s publication.

UPTE-CWA 9119, which represents about 14,000 research and technical workers in the University of California, is striking to challenge inequality and privatization at the UC, according to a UPTE press release.

Members of UPTE Healthcare and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, which represents more than 25,000 patient care technicians and services in the UC, will join the strike in solidarity.

Dan Russell, president of the UC Office of the President and UC Berkeley branch of UPTE, said there will be at least one picket line at 757 Westwood Plaza, but other picket lines are still being arranged.

The union is advocating for “A UC For the Many, Not the Few,” which aligns with Sanders’ message of robust public services, Russell said.

Senate to Vote on Yemen Resolution Tomorrow

Tuesday, March 12, 2019

WASHINGTON, March 12 – In advance of an expected vote in the Senate Wednesday on a resolution to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, Sen. Bernie Sanders issued the following statement:

"The resolution we will vote on in the Senate tomorrow to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen is enormously important and historic. This war is both a humanitarian and a strategic disaster, and Congress has the opportunity to end it.

"As a result of the Saudi-led intervention, Yemen is now experiencing the worst humanitarian disaster in the world. According to the United Nations, Yemen is at risk of the most severe famine in more than 100 years, with some 14 million people facing starvation. An estimated 85,000 children have already starved to death over the last several years, and millions more face death if the war continues. Beyond the humanitarian crisis, this war has been a disaster for our national security and the security of the region.

"Furthermore, U.S. participation in this war has not been authorized by Congress and is therefore unconstitutional. For the first time in 45 years, Congress must exercise its power under the War Powers Resolution and remove the U.S. from this war in Yemen.

"In December, the Senate made history by passing this same resolution. The humanitarian catastrophe has only gotten worse in Yemen, and our intervention there is every bit as unconstitutional as it was then. This time, after passing the Senate, I am confident it will pass in the House."

Why Bernie Sanders thinks he can win California this time

March 12, 2019

Excerpt:

Sen. Bernie Sanders isn’t conceding California in the Democratic presidential primary race to home state Sen. Kamala Harris. Far from it. Top Sanders campaign officials say he’s planning to have field offices and run commercials across the nation’s most populous state.

“We’re going to have a robust campaign in California.” said Ben Tulchin, Sanders’ San Francisco-based pollster, adding that “Bernie is extremely well-positioned” in California. “It will be a well-funded media and field campaign.”

Roughly half his support comes from Latinos and African Americans, some surveys suggest. Sanders’ favorability rating among Latino voters is 59 percent, according to a recent poll — higher than the rest of the announced field.

That has Sanders’ campaign predicting he will do well in the early states with large numbers of Latinos, including California and Nevada. If Sanders can corral Millennial and independent voters as he did in 2016, “we think that’s a winning coalition in California and beyond,” Tulchin said.

Bernie Sanders makes top Iowa, New Hampshire hires for 2020

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Sen. Bernie Sanders has hired four key Iowa staffers and three veterans in New Hampshire, building out a team of old and new staff as he makes his second Democratic bid for president.

MARCH 12, 2019

Leading the team is Misty Rebik, Sanders’ Iowa state director. She previously worked on LGBTQ rights and education advocacy for One Iowa, an LGBTQ advocacy organization, and served as a regional director for Planned Parenthood, where she created the organization’s first transgender care program in Iowa. In 2018, Rebik worked as campaign manager for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cathy Glasson, a union leader who embraced Sanders’ progressive policy priorities in her failed bid.

Another new addition is Jess Mazour, who will serve as Sanders’ political director. Mazour was most recently lead organizer on the farm and environment team at Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, a progressive advocacy group, and was a Sanders delegate in 2016. Her hire underscores the emphasis on rural issues that the senator has made a focus of his 2020 bid as he hopes to defeat President Donald Trump.

Sanders has also brought back Evan Burger to serve as his Iowa caucus director and Pete D’Alessandro to serve as a senior adviser to his team. Both worked on Sanders’ 2016 campaign, Burger as the senator’s advance director and D’Alessandro as his campaign coordinator. Burger most recently worked for Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement as a senior organizer, while D’Alessandro made a failed bid for Congress last cycle.

In New Hampshire, three veterans of Sanders’ 2016 run joined his 2020 campaign there. Sanders won the New Hampshire primary by 22 points in 2016.

Joe Caiazzo will be the state director for Sanders after working as the Rhode Island state director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 general election campaign. Carli Stevenson, a seasoned New Hampshire politico, will be the deputy state director and communications director for the campaign.

The campaign has also retained Kurt Ehrenberg as its New Hampshire senior adviser. Ehrenberg was the New Hampshire state director for the unsuccessful effort to get Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for president in 2016. He then became the New Hampshire political director for Sanders during his 2016 presidential campaign.

Bernie Sanders' campaign rebukes Julian Castro's criticism about slavery reparations

John Haltiwanger 2h

Excerpt:

In a 2020 press call, Sanders' campaign manager, Faiz Shakir, told INSIDER that an effort to "play politics" on this issue does a "disservice" to the senator's "lifelong" advocacy for "racial and economic justice," and ignores the nuances of a "worthy debate."

"I think this is a worthy debate, I appreciate all of the candidates offering their thoughts and ideas. No one's got the magic vision," Shakir said of the ongoing discussion on reparations in the context of the 2020 campaign season.

"We've had an awful legacy of slavery, awful legacy of racial disparities across so many different areas," Shakir added.

But anyone who says they have a "magic bullet" to address this is "lying," he said.

PDA Endorses Bernie Sanders for President

Mar 12, 2019

Bernie Sanders wins the official endorsement of the Progressive Democrats of America with a resounding 66% victory on the first ballot

To win PDA’s endorsement, a candidate needed to win more than 60% of the votes (which is always PDA’s threshold for endorsements). Because there were so many candidates in this race, we had adjusted the rules such that if any candidate failed to receive more than 60% of the vote on the first ballot, there would be a run-off between the top two candidates.

However, no second round will be necessary as Senator Sanders won a resounding victory, with 66% support from all of the PDAers who responded.

Therefore, it’s official: PDA endorses Senator Bernie Sanders for President! Please give to support Bernie’s run for President.

Here are the final results of PDA’s presidential nomination poll:

Bernie Sanders—66%
Undecided/Other—10%
Elizabeth Warren—9%
Kamala Harris—5%
Tulsi Gabbard—3%
Jay Inslee—2%
Cory Booker—1%
Marianne Williamson—1%
Amy Klobuchar—1%
Julian Castro—Less than 1%
John Hickenlooper—Less than 1%
Kirstin Gillibrand—Less than 1%
John Delaney—Less than 1%

In the coming days, weeks, and months PDA will be supporting Senator Sanders’ run for the White House in innumerable ways. Stay Tuned! The political revolution that PDA launched with Bernie back in 2014 continues!
