Bernie Sanders to mark the 'turning point' for his political revolution
Friday 9 June 2017
Excerpt:
Bernie Sanders speech at the Peoples Summit in Chicago on Saturday will mark a turning point for the political revolution he inspired, according to the organizers behind the three-day activist event.
Sanders will headline the event on Saturday night, while high-profile celebrity activists including Mark Ruffalo, Jessie Eisenberg and Naomi Klein will also attend.
Its going to be a turning point for the people who have been really invested in the Bernie revolution, said Winnie Wong, a key organizer of the summit and a co-founder of People for Bernie, an independent group with more than a million members who supported his bid for president.
Wong said the summit would be a political education for organizers ahead of 2018.
They will be better prepared to create campaigns that are authentic and credible and principled. The program is conceived to make sure that people leave with a plan.
More than 4,000 people including recently elected progressive Democrats, former Sanders campaign staffers, and grassroots activists will gather at McCormick Place in Chicago on Friday. Among the most anticipated speakers will be Berniecrats who have recently won office running on a Sanders-esque message.

Bernie Sanders congratulates Jeremy Corbyn, saying he is 'delighted' at the result
Ben Kentish 2 hours ago
Bernie Sanders has congratulated Jeremy Corbyn after Labour exceeded expectations in the general election and looks to be on course to increase its number of parliamentary seats. The former Democratic presidential candidate said he had stayed up to watch UK results come in and was delighted at what he had seen.
I am delighted to see Labour do so well, he told the Washington Post. All over the world people are rising up against austerity and massive levels of income and wealth inequality. People in the UK, the US and elsewhere want governments that represent all the people, not just the 1 per cent. I congratulate Jeremy Corbyn for running a very positive and effective campaign.
Mr Sanders had spoken warmly of Mr Corbyn during a visit to the UK earlier this month. Answering a question from The Independent following a speech at the Cambridge Union, the senator said: Corbyn has shown a lot of courage in dealing with some of the economic issues.
I applaud Jeremy Corbyn for raising those issues because at the end of the day if we are going to create governments that work for all of us, if were going to deal with healthcare and create great education systems and protect the environment and combat climate change
we need to have a government of what Abraham Lincoln described as of the people, by the people and for the people, and not a government of billionaires and large, multinational corporations. So I applaud Corbyn for raising those issues.

Bernie Sanders brought his 'resistance' message to Dublin (after stopping by the Aras)
https://twitter.com/DaraghBroph/status/871440095169171456Excerpt:
Irish outreach
The outreach to convince Sanders to appear in Dublin began with a call to his wife, Jane OMeara Sanders, host for the evening David McWilliams explained to the crowd, ahead of last nights much-anticipated Dalkey Book Festival event at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. OMeara Sanders has strong Irish roots, McWilliams said and had managed to convince her husband to add the country to his itinerary.
Taking the stage to a rapturous reception, the Senator told the crowd that Jane had taken a genealogy test that day and that it had turned out she was 96% Irish. As he put it, more than the average Irish person in Ireland.
The couple had paid a visit to the Phoenix Park to visit President Michael D Higgins during the afternoon, we were told. But unfortunately, we never got to hear what was discussed.
He then joined McWilliams for an interview for an hour or so. That was billed as the sit-down part of the evening but Sanders (yet again confounding expectations) took to his feet whenever he was asked anything and instead stalked the stage, addressing the crowd and even engaging in brief conversations with audience members.
In one of the lighter moments of the night, he was asked about the famous moment when a small bird somehow managed to fly down onto his podium mid-speech at a campaign rally last year. He recalled: We spent months training that bird.
And, of course, there was the obligatory question: would he run for the presidency in 2020?
The answer: Honestly, I dont know. (Admittedly, it would have been a strange choice of timing and location for a major campaign announcement). Asked whether he would consider running as a third-party candidate in the next general election, he said it was unlikely. The decision I have made right now is to open up the Democratic party and bring millions more into it.
