Bernie Sanders on John Fetterman, Pittsburgh politics and the rising tide of Democratic Socialism

JUL 12, 2018 3:11 PM
JULIAN ROUTH

Excerpts:

When the Vermont senator and Democratic Socialist visits Pittsburgh this Sunday to attend a teachers’ union conference and rally with lieutenant governor candidate John Fetterman, he’ll likely ride in on a wave of momentum from the area’s leftward shift in politics, but come equipped with a message of urgency: that in the age of Donald Trump, candidates must fight even harder for the Democratic Socialist ideals of health care for all, raising the minimum wage and reforming the criminal justice system.

The recent successes of DSA-backed state House candidates Summer Lee and Sara Innamorato serve as validation, Mr. Sanders said, that the “political revolution,” as he calls it, is picking up steam across the country.

The senator said he followed Ms. Lee and Ms. Innamorato closely in their races against members of the Democratic establishment, and has spoken with both of them recently. He said he was told they would both be attending this Sunday’s rally.

"What impressed me is the grassroots campaign that they ran. My understanding, which is really quite amazing, is that they had hundreds and hundreds of people in their legislative districts knocking on doors," Mr. Sanders said of the two candidates. "That is really quite incredible."

Majority of Democrats want Candidates to be more like Bernie Sanders, Poll finds

BY TIM MARCIN ON 7/11/18 AT 1:19 PM

Excerpt:

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders might have lost in his 2016 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, but he certainly won a number of supporters along the way.

To wit: A new poll released Wednesday by YouGov showed that a majority of Democrats want candidates in 2018 to be more like the independent, democratic socialist candidate.

The polling firm asked: "Do you wish the candidates who run for Congress this year will be more or less like Bernie Sanders?"

A full 57 percent of Democratic respondents said "more like Bernie Sanders" in response. Sixteen percent said less while 27 percent responded "not sure." Not surprisingly, Sanders wasn't exactly popular with conservatives. Just 13 percent of Republicans said they wanted candidates to be more like Sanders, while 74 percent said less. Independents were split. Twenty-seven percent said more like Sanders, while 35 percent said less, and 38 percent said "not sure."

Sanders Statement on Supreme Court Nominee

Monday, July 9, 2018

WASHINGTON, July 9 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement Monday after President Donald Trump announced he is nominating Brett Kavanaugh to be an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court:

"Let us be clear: President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will be a rubber-stamp for an extreme, right-wing agenda pushed by corporations and billionaires. The coming Senate debate over the replacement of retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is about the future of Roe v. Wade, campaign finance reform, voting rights, workers' rights, health care, climate change, environmental protection and gun safety.

"Brett Kavanaugh, contrary to 200 years of Supreme Court precedent, believes a president 'may decline to enforce a statute . . . when the president deems the statute unconstitutional.' He ruled against a migrant teenager seeking to be released from custody in order to obtain an abortion. He believes a president can only be indicted after he leaves office and should not be subjected to civil suits while in office. He ruled the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was unconstitutional. And he would not uphold the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate.

"I do not believe a person with those views should be given a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court. We must mobilize the American people to defeat Trump’s right-wing, reactionary nominee."

Washington Post looks ahead to 2020 for Sen. Sanders

By: Mike Hoey
Posted: Jul 06, 2018 11:33 PM EDT

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is up for re-election in November, but some people are starting to look a little farther into his future than that.

On Friday morning, the Washington Post ranked him as the top contender for the next Democratic presidential nomination.

Local 22 & Local 44 reporter and anchor Mike Hoey asked Sanders about that story while the senator was hosting UVM nurses for a news conference.

Mike asked, "You probably have no doubt seen -- the Washington Post has pegged you once again, at the moment, as the #1 contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Any response to that?"

After chuckling and holding up his hands, Sen. Sanders said, "Let's focus on the nurses."
