Bernie Sanders: We cannot rely on Trump. Congress must lead the way in this unprecedented crisis

Wed 8 Apr 2020 06.30 EDT
Opinion
Bernie Sanders

Excerpt:

As long as this pandemic continues, Medicare must be empowered to pay all of the deductibles, co-payments and out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for the uninsured and the underinsured. No one in America who is sick, regardless of immigration status, should be afraid to seek the medical treatment they need during this national crisis.

Obviously, Congress must not only address the pandemic crisis, it must also act with a fierce sense of urgency to effectively deal with the economic crisis as well.

In the last two weeks, a record-breaking 10 million people filed unemployment claims – more than during the entire 2008 Great Recession. Frighteningly, the St Louis Federal Reserve projects that 47 million more people may become unemployed by the end of June, with unemployment reaching 32%. While such estimates may be a worst-case scenario, the reality of the pandemic has taught us that worst-case scenarios are what we must plan for. For the sake of working families all over this country, we must be prepared for all contingencies.

We cannot wait before taking the bold action that is necessary. In my view, it makes a lot more sense to prevent the collapse of our economy than figuring out how we put it back together after it crumbles. Simply stated, that means that every worker must keep receiving his or her paycheck and benefits during the crisis. In the recent emergency relief bill, Congress appropriated over $25bn in grants to the airline companies so that 2 million workers in that industry will continue to receive their full paycheck and benefits through 30 September. And that is exactly what we must do for every worker in America. This is not a radical idea. It is similar to what France, Norway, Denmark, the UK and other countries are doing.

Further, as quickly as possible, we must get money into the hands of people by immediately providing a $2,000 monthly emergency payment to every person in the country until the crisis has passed.

Press Release: Progressive Democrats of America Calls on Bernie Sanders to Stay in the Race

https://twitter.com/pdamerica/status/1247581692014911488

Excerpt:

The severity of the COVID-19 national emergency has changed everything in this election year. Coronavirus has revealed, with tragic consequences, the failings of our public health institutions and economic safety net – in ways that Bernie Sanders has been warning against for decades. Thus, it comes as no surprise that Bernie’s platform directly addresses these failings; in marked contrast to his rival’s. As many observers have noted, with each passing day the COVID-19 pandemic is proving the wisdom of the Sanders agenda.

In particular, Medicare for All needs to be the official policy of the Democratic Party and its presidential nominee in 2020. The pandemic has exposed America’s current healthcare system for the disaster that it is. There can be no denying that having tens of millions of Americans unable to access affordable care greatly increases the public health risk for everyone. America needs universal single-payer health care; and the only way to get there is through the Democratic Party. Yet Joe Biden opposes Medicare for All, while Bernie Sanders is its leading proponent.

In the wake of COVID-19, Medicare for All isn’t merely a winning political issue; it’s a political landslide issue. Even if Bernie doesn’t win the nomination, by continuing to campaign and win delegates to the convention, he could leverage Medicare for All into the party platform. For this, America, the Democratic Party, and even Joe Biden, should want Bernie Sanders to stay in the race.

We also need Bernie to stay in the race to insure that his voice is heard as we enter the peak days of the crisis. Over the past few weeks, Bernie has fought tirelessly on behalf of average Americans in the battles over the stimulus bills. As one of only three viable candidates for President, Bernie has a powerful platform. That will change overnight when his campaign ends; and his influence will wane, leaving Americans even more at the mercy of a political class that, on balance, prioritizes big money interests over those of the vast majority.

The Nation: Bernie gets personal on the pandemic, politics, and why he's still in the race.

By John Nichols

Excerpt:

The Senator and I spoke for the better part of two hours on the evening of April 1. This was a reasonably open-ended conversation that touched on many topics—including his sense of the transformational moment in which the United States finds itself, his certainty that the government must respond far more boldly to the public health and economic challenges posed by the Coronavirus Pandemic, and the ways in which he is assessing his campaign amid calls for him to quit the race and calls for him to continue. He even explained his lockdown routine. Here are some of the highlights of our conversation.

John Nichols: Let’s begin by putting things in perspective. What’s your sense of where things stand today?

Bernie Sanders: At this particular moment, we are entering into the most frightening and dangerous period in the modern history of this country—certainly in my lifetime.

We are looking at a global pandemic with Covid-19. We do not know how many people will die in America, but the numbers could be in the hundreds of thousands. We don’t know how many people will be infected, but it will certainly be many, many millions.

There are estimates that there may be as many as 30 to 40 million people, maybe more, losing their jobs. Last week, the number of unemployment applications was the highest by far since records have been kept. This week may be even higher.

So you’re looking at an economic crisis of unprecedented magnitude. Going back to the Great Depression, as a comparison, unemployment may actually be higher in this crisis than it was in the 1930’s. And we’re looking simultaneously at a massive healthcare crisis, which could kill hundreds of thousands of people and absolutely disrupt our way of life for all people, including those who are not infected. That’s what we’re looking at!

Doctors for Bernie: Statement on COVID-19

https://twitter.com/Docs_4_Bernie/status/1247218520200364032

Our current crisis reveals the interconnected nature of humanity. We are only as healthy as the most vulnerable members of society. A “healthcare” system that treats healthcare as a commodity to be profited upon, rather than a collective responsibility to serve our fellow human beings, is a failure to our public health and common humanity. This system is intrinsically at odds with the oaths we swore. We deserve better, all of us.

"Bernie Sanders: Still Ahead of His Time"

Apr 1, 2020

This video from RootsAction points to why Sanders is the strongest candidate to take on the coronavirus pandemic.

A video released Thursday by progressive advocacy organization RootsAction uses decades of archival footage to show that the deadly coronavirus pandemic has—in just a matter of weeks—vindicated Sen. Bernie Sanders' career-long support for Medicare for All and sweeping economic change.

"They're basic problems in our political and economic system that Bernie Sanders has been correctly diagnosing his entire career."
—Norman Solomon, RootsAction

The two-minute clip features footage dating back to 1987 of Sanders, today a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, warning about the "crisis of affordable healthcare" and urging the U.S. government take steps to "protect the American people and people throughout the world" from a possible global outbreak on the scale of the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic.

"Voters are watching in real time as Bernie Sanders' platform—Medicare for All, a federal housing guarantee, paid leave for everyone, and much else—is looking more and more like a common-sense solution to huge problems," Jeff Cohen, co-founder of RootsAction.org, said in a statement.

"With 27 states and territories left to cast their votes [in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary]," said Cohen, "we believe that it's important to deliver this message as widely as possible."

Democrat Sanders calls on Wisconsin to postpone Tuesday primary

APRIL 1, 2020 / 12:19 PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Wednesday called on Wisconsin to postpone its April 7 primary, citing the risk from the novel coronavirus.

“People should not be forced to put their lives on the line to vote, which is why 15 states are now following the advice of public health experts and delaying their elections,” Sanders said in a statement. “We urge Wisconsin to join them.”
